There is no evidence here for a reliable, universal top five: editing speed changes with the software, footage, effects, configuration, and laptop power limits. Two current high-end options are well supported by published specifications: Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max for workflows built around macOS and its media engines, and ASUS’s ProArt P16 for a Windows workflow that can use an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. Choose by workload and configuration, not by a headline chip or GPU alone.
Why there is no dependable universal top five
A laptop that excels in one editing app or codec may not lead in another. GPU effects and AI features can benefit from graphics performance and video memory; codec support, system memory, cooling, and the laptop’s power limits also matter. Display quality, storage, and portability affect the experience even when they do not decide a benchmark score.

Independent results are tied to the tested machine and software. For example, Notebookcheck reports PugetBench scores for a tested 2026 MacBook Pro 16 with M5 Pro and selected comparison laptops using Premiere Pro 26, Resolve 20.3 Studio, and specific PugetBench versions. Those results show why application and test conditions matter; they do not establish a five-model ranking. Notebookcheck’s benchmark coverage should be read in that context.

Two well-supported high-end choices
| Laptop | What the manufacturer lists | Best fit to consider | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch with M5 Max | Up to a 40-core GPU and up to 128GB unified memory; dedicated media engines for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW. Storage varies by configuration. | Mac users editing supported codecs, especially workflows that can make use of Apple’s media engines. | M5 Max GPU, memory, and storage figures are configurable ceilings, not base specifications. [Apple, 2026] |
| ASUS ProArt P16 | US product page lists options up to Ryzen AI 9 465, GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, 64GB RAM, and 4TB SSD. | Windows creators who need a high-end discrete GPU and want options aimed at filmmaking and editing. | Available configurations and display specifications vary by model and region. Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch with M5 Max
Why it suits some editing workflows
Apple specifies media engines for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW, alongside M5 Max configurations with 32-core or 40-core GPUs and up to 128GB unified memory. That combination makes it a strong candidate for a Mac-based workflow using those codecs, but it does not prove that it will be fastest in every editor or effect-heavy project. Confirm the exact chip, memory, and storage before buying. Apple’s 2026 announcement also states that M5 Pro and M5 Max deliver up to 5.4x faster DaVinci Resolve Studio video-effects rendering than MacBook Pro with M1 Max, and up to 3x versus MacBook Pro with M4 Max. These are Apple’s comparisons, not an independent cross-brand test.

What to weigh
Digital Camera World selected the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max as its overall video-editing pick and reported its own Premiere Pro testing. That is editorial context, not a controlled comparison of five laptops or direct evidence about the 16-inch model. Its guide flags the M5 Max MacBook Pro’s high price and lack of a touchscreen as drawbacks. Read the guide for its testing context.
ASUS ProArt P16
Why it suits some editing workflows
ASUS describes the ProArt P16 as a filmmaking and video-editing laptop, with US-listed configurations up to a GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, 64GB RAM, and 4TB SSD. ASUS says RTX 50-series GPUs support 10-bit 4:2:2 workflows and accelerated encoding and decoding for 4K and 8K content. This is a manufacturer specification and capability statement; it does not by itself show how a particular P16 performs in your editor.

Check the exact configuration
The listed maximums are options, not a guarantee that every ProArt P16 includes them. ASUS notes that specifications, including the display, vary by configuration. Check the regional product listing for the exact GPU, memory, storage, and screen before comparing prices. ASUS’s page includes performance comparisons based on vendor and NVIDIA tests conducted in 2025 on specified hardware, drivers, operating systems, and applications; treat them as attributed vendor testing, not an independent current head-to-head ranking.
How to choose for your editing workload
- Start with your editor and footage. Check the software version and codecs you use, then confirm how your chosen laptop’s CPU, GPU, and media engines support them. The MacBook Pro’s listed media engines cover H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW; ASUS describes RTX 50-series support for 10-bit 4:2:2 workflows.
- Match GPU and memory to the work. Effects and AI features may place more weight on GPU performance and video memory than straightforward cutting does. Compare the exact GPU and memory configuration, not the maximum listed for a product family.
- Consider the whole setup. Assess the display for your color work, storage for your media and active projects, and portability for your working conditions. Smaller laptops can involve compromises in power, battery life, and viewing ergonomics, as Digital Camera World notes in its general buying guidance.
- Use benchmarks as evidence, not a verdict. Compare results only when the application, benchmark version, tested configuration, and conditions are relevant to your work. A benchmark score does not guarantee the same outcome with different footage, effects, or software versions.
What other published comparisons do—and do not—show
Apple’s M5 performance figures compare specified MacBook Pro generations, and ASUS’s page presents vendor/NVIDIA testing on specified setups. Neither provides a current, independent comparison of five laptop models across one consistent video-editing test.
