There is no single power tool brand that is best for everyone. The right choice depends on the battery system you already own, the tools you expect to add, how often you work, and what fits your budget and hands. Choose the platform first, then compare specific tools and kits within it.
Start with your battery platform and future tool needs
Buying a cordless tool can shape later purchases because batteries and chargers are tied to a platform. If you already own compatible batteries, staying in that system may make sense—but confirm compatibility for the exact tool and battery before buying. If you are starting fresh, list the tools you expect to need over the next few years and check that the platform offers them.

Do not choose by a brand label alone. Compare the complete cost of the starter kit and likely additions, including batteries and charger, and consider whether those tools suit your workload. A platform decision matters more than a broad ranking when it determines which tools you can use with the batteries you own.
How the major brands are positioned
Published brand guides offer useful starting points, but their categories are editorial recommendations rather than results from a controlled test of equivalent tools. One comparison positions Milwaukee for professional or high-power work, DeWalt as an all-around option, Makita for woodworking, and Ryobi for budget-conscious homeowners. This Old House also selects Bosch in a best-brand category. These judgments do not establish that one brand is universally superior.
#1 Best Overall
- Drill/Driver features a 3/8" chuck, 0-650 rpm ideal for consumer DIY projects, 11 position clutch to prevent stripping of screws and damaging work material and an LED work light for increased visibility in tight or dark spaces
- The circular saw's compact design makes it easy to use and reduces fatigue. The 5.5" blade is capable of cutting 2x lumber, and its high torque motor makes it ideal for consumer DIY projects. Adjustments are quick and easy with the tool-free depth of cut and bevel settings for angled cutting.
- Work light features up to 11 hours of runtime
- 2 batteries double the runtime for less down time on larger projects
- Part of the BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Lithium Ion Battery System
Milwaukee
Consider Milwaukee if your work is professional or demands a broad investment in a cordless platform. Weigh that use case against the cost of the tools you actually need, local availability, and the commitment to its battery system.
DeWalt
DeWalt is characterized in one comparison as an all-around or value choice. Check whether the exact tools you need are available in the platform and compare the price and kit contents with alternatives in your area.
Makita
One guide recommends Makita for woodworking. Treat that as a reason to shortlist it, not proof that every Makita tool is best for precision work; compare the particular models you would use and how they handle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRyobi
Ryobi is positioned as a budget-conscious option for homeowners and occasional projects. That editorial description does not mean it is unsuitable for every demanding job. Match the exact tool to the work and expected frequency of use.
Rank #2
- CMCD700: powerful motor: provides 280 uwo of power and 2 speed gearbox ranging from 0-350 RPM and 0-1,500 RPM for demanding tasks

Bosch
Bosch appears as a major battery platform in one comparison and receives a category recommendation in This Old House’s guide. A publisher’s award is not a universal verdict, so compare Bosch’s relevant tools and local service options against your requirements.
Compare the exact tool, kit, and ownership costs
Once you have a shortlist of platforms, compare the specific models and bundles rather than assuming brands are interchangeable. A combo kit can be a practical entry point after choosing a platform, but its value depends on what is actually included.
- Kit contents: Check tool model numbers, the number and capacity of batteries, charger, and whether a case or bag is included.
- Future additions: Confirm the platform has the tools on your planned list and verify battery compatibility for each exact model.
- Total cost: Compare the kit price with the separate tools and batteries you would otherwise buy, then consider the cost of likely expansion. Prices and availability vary by retailer and location.
- Handling: If possible, handle the exact models. Weight, grip, balance, and controls can matter as much as a brand’s reputation, especially during repeated or overhead work.
- Workload: Distinguish occasional repairs from regular renovation, woodworking, or daily professional use. The right balance of cost and capability depends on how demanding and frequent the work is.
- Support: Check the current warranty, repair process, and local retailer access for the exact tool and country. Do not assume coverage or service terms are identical across regions or product lines.
Make the choice for your situation
If you already own cordless tools
Identify the battery system and exact battery models you have. Check whether the new tool is compatible and whether using the existing batteries suits the task; then compare the price of a tool-only purchase with a kit that includes additional batteries or a charger.
If you are buying your first cordless tools
Write down the first few tools you will genuinely use, then compare the platforms that cover those needs. Decide how much you want to spend now and how likely you are to expand later. A starter combo kit may be convenient, but only if its included tools are useful and its battery system fits your plans.

If you use tools professionally or frequently
Prioritize the models’ suitability for your work, ergonomics, repair access, and the cost of expanding the system. Professional-use positioning can help create a shortlist, but it is not a substitute for checking tool-level performance and support in your location.
If you use tools occasionally at home
Focus on the tools you need, the complete kit price, and whether the platform has sensible options for future projects. A budget-oriented recommendation may be relevant, but do not pay for a larger system than your work calls for—or assume a lower-cost label settles whether a specific tool is adequate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What brand rankings can and cannot tell you
The available guides do not provide a common controlled test protocol comparing the same tools across brands. Their rankings therefore cannot establish which brand is most powerful, most reliable, or best overall. Use category recommendations to build a shortlist, then make the decision with model-specific information and current local terms.
