My two picks are the iPhone 17e for the lowest entry price and the iPhone 17 if you want a larger listed screen and are willing to spend $200 more. That is a narrow recommendation based on Apple’s published US prices and screen sizes—not a claim that these are the objectively best-performing iPhones.
Apple’s six iPhone price positions in 2026
These are US starting prices shown by Apple, checked October 7, 2026. The $1,199 position includes two models, so six price positions do not mean six individual model names or six different prices.

| Price position | Model or models | Listed screen size | What the price alone tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| $699 | iPhone 17e | 6.1 inches | Lowest starting price in this lineup. |
| $799 | iPhone 16 | 6.1 inches | $100 above the 17e starting price. |
| $899 | iPhone 17 | 6.3 inches | $200 above the 17e; its listed screen is 0.2 inches larger. |
| $1,099 | iPhone Air | 6.5 inches | $400 above the 17e; its listed screen is 0.4 inches larger than the 17’s. |
| $1,199 | iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max | 6.3 inches for the 18 Pro; not stated for the Pro Max in the cited comparison details | One starting-price position covers both Pro sizes. |
| $1,999 | iPhone Duo | 7.6 inches | Highest starting price; Apple marked it “PRE-ORDER 10.16.” |
Prices and screen sizes are Apple’s published US figures, not a global price list or independent measurements. They can change. Apple’s preorder label gives a date but does not establish general availability on October 7.

The two iPhones I’d pay for—and why
iPhone 17e: the straightforward lower-cost choice
At $699, the 17e is the least expensive model in Apple’s listed lineup. Apple specifies a 6.1-inch OLED display, 256GB or 512GB capacities, and IP68 water and dust resistance under IEC standard 60529. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Choose it if your priority is spending less while staying with a current model in Apple’s lineup, and a 6.1-inch screen suits you. The figures here do not establish how its camera, battery life, or performance compare with other models, so don’t treat the low price as proof that it is the best value for every buyer.
iPhone 17: the modest step up for a larger listed screen
The iPhone 17 starts at $899, or $200 more than the 17e, and Apple lists its screen at 6.3 inches rather than 6.1. That is a concrete reason to consider it if you want the larger of those two listed screen sizes and accept the higher starting price.

The available specifications do not establish whether the 17’s other differences justify the extra $200 for you. Before choosing it, compare the exact storage, features, and current price of the configurations you would actually buy. The recommendation here is limited to the published price and size difference, not a claim of superior camera, battery, or speed.
Why the other price positions are not automatic upgrades
iPhone 16: a $100 decision, not a proven bargain
At $799, the iPhone 16 sits $100 above the 17e, and both are listed with 6.1-inch screens. The information available here does not provide enough comparable specifications to establish that the 16’s extra cost buys a benefit you need—or that it is inferior. Check the specific differences and any current discount before deciding.

iPhone Air: pay more only for a reason beyond the price ladder
The Air starts at $1,099 and has a listed 6.5-inch screen. That makes it the larger-screen option between the 17 and the Pro price position, but the price and screen size alone do not establish whether it is the right fit or how it compares in other areas.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: one price position, two sizes
Both Pro models start at $1,199 in Apple’s US listing. The comparison details give a 6.3-inch screen size for the 18 Pro, but do not state a Pro Max screen size here. The shared starting price is not enough to compare their configurations or establish which Pro model, if either, suits your needs.

iPhone Duo: a distinct form factor and a preorder caveat
The Duo is listed at $1,999 with a 7.6-inch screen, and Apple’s store marked it “PRE-ORDER 10.16.” Its price and screen size set it apart from the smaller-screen positions; those facts alone do not establish its features, value, or availability on a particular purchase date.

Use the ladder without mistaking price for value
- Set a spending ceiling. Use the starting prices as a first filter, not as a promise that the configuration you want costs exactly that amount.
- Decide what screen size works for you. Apple lists sizes from 6.1 inches for the 17e and 16 to 7.6 inches for the Duo. A larger number is not inherently better if you prefer a smaller phone.
- Compare the configurations you would actually buy. A starting price does not show the price of every storage option or establish which features differ. For the 17e, Apple lists 256GB and 512GB capacities.
- Check the current total cost. Apple’s US store promotes trade-in credits and carrier deals, but eligibility and terms can vary. Verify them at checkout rather than treating a promoted credit as a guaranteed discount.
- Confirm availability and price on purchase day. The lineup, prices, preorder status, and offers can change; in particular, Apple’s October 7 listing labeled the Duo “PRE-ORDER 10.16.”
