It is the least expensive tier with Monthly Games: $79.99 for 12 months in the United States. Choose Extra only if you also want its rotating Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics, or Premium if Classics, time-limited trials, cloud streaming, or the Sony Pictures Catalog are important to you.
The short answer
All three PlayStation Plus tiers include Monthly Games. You do not need Extra or Premium to claim them. For a player focused on adding the monthly selections to their library, the PlayStation Plus Essential 12-month membership is the sensible purchase because it provides the same Monthly Games benefit at the lowest annual price.

Extra and Premium cost more for catalog-based benefits rather than better monthly-game access. Extra adds a changing library of hundreds of games and Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium adds the Extra benefits, a Classics Catalog, limited-time Game Trials, cloud streaming, and the Sony Pictures Catalog. The right upgrade depends on whether you will use those features often enough to justify the difference.

What “Monthly Games” actually means
PlayStation defines the benefit this way: “Monthly games are games available for you to download and play at no extra cost during your PlayStation Plus membership.” New selections are added every calendar month.
You must claim each game while it is eligible
Add the month’s games to your library during the eligibility period. Merely being subscribed is not a substitute for claiming them; the games need to be added while they are offered.
An active membership is required to keep playing
Claimed Monthly Games remain playable under the benefit only while your PlayStation Plus membership is active. If the membership becomes inactive, you cannot continue playing those included games until you have an active membership again. This requirement is separate from whether a game is still being promoted in the current month.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Monthly Games are the rotating selections you claim for your library. Extra’s Game Catalog and Premium’s Classics Catalog are subscription libraries: their contents can change, and access depends on the catalog’s current availability and your tier. A game in a catalog is not automatically a permanently claimed Monthly Game.

Plan comparison for monthly-game shoppers
| Plan | Monthly price | Three-month price | 12-month price | What it adds beyond the lower tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $27.99 | $79.99 | Monthly Games, online multiplayer, exclusive discounts, Share Play, cloud storage, and exclusive content. |
| Extra | $16.99 | $43.99 | $134.99 | Everything in Essential, plus the Game Catalog (described by PlayStation as hundreds of games) and Ubisoft+ Classics. |
| Premium | $19.99 | $54.99 | $159.99 | Everything in Extra, plus the Classics Catalog, limited-time Game Trials, cloud streaming, and the Sony Pictures Catalog. |
Using the 12-month prices, the simple monthly equivalent is about $6.67 for Essential, $11.25 for Extra, and $13.33 for Premium. Those are calculations from the published annual prices, not separate billing rates.
PlayStation Plus Essential: best for monthly games alone
Essential is the minimum tier that includes Monthly Games, making it the default choice for this specific goal. Its US prices are $10.99 per month, $27.99 every three months, or $79.99 for 12 months. The annual option costs less per month than paying for four three-month periods ($111.96) or 12 individual months ($131.88), assuming the prices remain unchanged.
What else Essential provides
- Online multiplayer for games that require PlayStation Plus.
- Exclusive discounts.
- Share Play.
- Cloud storage.
- Exclusive content.
Those features can make Essential worthwhile even if you do not use every Monthly Game. If you already have another way to play most of the month’s selections and do not need online multiplayer or the other listed benefits, calculate the value from the games and services you will actually use rather than upgrading by default.
Who should buy the 12-month Essential option
Choose the PlayStation Plus Essential 12-month membership when you want to claim the monthly selections, play online, and receive the standard membership benefits without maintaining a second game library. It is also the clearest option for a household that wants predictable access and does not want its available games tied to a larger rotating catalog.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

PlayStation Plus Extra: for monthly games plus a rotating library
Extra costs $16.99 per month, $43.99 for three months, or $134.99 for 12 months in the US. It includes everything in Essential, so Monthly Games are still part of the package.
The Game Catalog changes the value calculation
The central reason to pay for Extra is PlayStation’s Game Catalog, described as containing hundreds of games. It is useful if you expect to download and play several catalog titles during the year instead of buying each one separately. The catalog is not a guarantee that a particular game will remain available: PlayStation says catalog availability varies over time and by plan.
Ubisoft+ Classics is included
Extra also includes Ubisoft+ Classics. This is an additional reason to choose Extra only if the included selection interests you; it should not be treated as a replacement for the Monthly Games benefit, which Essential already provides.

When Extra is worth the premium
At the annual rate, Extra is $55 more than Essential. That difference is justified when you will use the rotating Game Catalog or Ubisoft+ Classics often enough to replace purchases or fill substantial playtime. If you only check in once a month to claim the included games, the catalog may add cost without adding meaningful value.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
PlayStation Plus Premium: for Classics, trials, and streaming
Premium costs $19.99 per month, $54.99 for three months, or $159.99 for 12 months in the US. It includes all Essential and Extra benefits, including Monthly Games, the Game Catalog, and Ubisoft+ Classics.
Features that Extra does not include
- Classics Catalog: access to the separate catalog of classic games.
- Limited-time Game Trials: time-limited opportunities to try eligible games.
- Cloud streaming: streaming access where the feature and title support it.
- Sony Pictures Catalog: the video catalog included with Premium.
Premium is $25 more per year than Extra and $80 more than Essential. That extra charge makes sense when at least one of these Premium-only features is a regular priority, not merely an occasional curiosity.
Cloud streaming is not the same as downloading
Downloading a Monthly Game or catalog title uses local console storage. Cloud streaming is a separate Premium feature and depends on supported availability. If your objective is simply to download and play the monthly selections, Premium does not improve that process over Essential.

Catalog turnover and the PS4 change
Catalog-based benefits require tolerance for change. PlayStation states that catalog availability varies over time and by plan, so a title you see today may not remain available throughout your membership. Check the current catalog before upgrading for one specific game rather than assuming a long-term guarantee.

PlayStation also notes that from January 2026, PS4 games are added only intermittently. That does not remove Monthly Games from Essential, Extra, or Premium, but it matters if your upgrade decision depends on a steady flow of new PS4 catalog additions. Treat the current catalog and published availability as the authority for what you can play now.
How to get the most from Monthly Games
- Choose a tier that matches your goal. Select Essential for monthly claims alone; move to Extra or Premium for their specific additional features.
- Check the Monthly Games announcement each calendar month. Identify which titles are currently eligible before the offer changes.
- Add every wanted title to your library before the eligibility window closes. Do this even if you do not plan to install it immediately.
- Keep the membership active when you want to play. The Monthly Games benefit requires an active PlayStation Plus membership.
- Review the catalog before an upgrade or renewal. For Extra and Premium, verify that the games and features you care about are currently available for your plan and region.
Common buying mistakes
Paying for Premium just to claim Monthly Games
Premium does not provide a higher class of Monthly Games access. All three plans include that benefit, so the upgrade only makes sense for Classics, trials, streaming, or the Sony Pictures Catalog.
Confusing a catalog title with a claimed Monthly Game
A title in the Game Catalog or Classics Catalog is subject to catalog availability. Monthly Games must be added to your library during their eligible month and still require active membership.
Assuming a catalog remains unchanged for a full year
Catalog contents can change over time and differ by plan. A year-long subscription does not establish that every catalog title shown on the day you join will remain available for all 12 months.
Using a US price for another country
The figures in this guide are US prices. PlayStation pricing, taxes, billing intervals, and available catalogs can differ by country or region; check the local PlayStation plan page before paying.
A practical decision rule
Start with Essential unless you can name the Extra or Premium feature you will use. Upgrade to Extra when the Game Catalog or Ubisoft+ Classics will be a substantial part of your playtime. Upgrade to Premium when Classics, trials, or cloud streaming is the deciding feature. Recheck the live catalog and regional price at checkout, because those details are time-sensitive.
