Bolotana, Sardinia, May Be a New Blue Zone—but Its Female Longevity Finding Is Preliminary

A 2026 demographic study found unusually favorable estimates of survival after age 70 among women in Bolotana, a small Sardinian mountain municipality. The authors call it a possible longevity Blue Zone, not an established one: the estimates vary across calendar periods, and the study does not identify what caused them.

What the study found in Bolotana

Researchers used municipal civil records to construct sex-specific partial period life tables for 2021–2025. They estimated how many additional years a person could expect to live after reaching 70, and the conditional probability of surviving from age 70 to 100. The figures describe those two different outcomes; neither is a measure of life expectancy at birth.

Group or measure Estimate How to read it
Women, remaining life expectancy at age 70 20.85 years (95% CI 19.42–22.43) Estimated additional years after reaching 70, using the 2021–2025 period analysis.
Women, survival from age 70 to 100 13.83% (95% CI 7.33–23.75%) A conditional period estimate for women at age 70—not the share of all Bolotana residents who will become centenarians.
Men, remaining life expectancy at age 70 16.02 years (95% CI 14.55–17.79) Estimated additional years after reaching 70, using the same period analysis.
Men, survival from age 70 to 100 4.92% (95% CI 1.58–12.76%) Conditional period estimate for men at age 70.

The female survival estimate was above the annual reference ranges reported for Nuoro Province, Sardinia, and Italy. Those comparisons are descriptive, however, and the study cautions that they are not formal tests of statistical significance. The confidence interval around the 13.83% estimate is also wide, underscoring the uncertainty involved in estimating survival to 100 in a small community.

Why the result does not yet establish a Blue Zone

Bolotana is in the Marghine area of central Sardinia, roughly 110 km from the historically identified Sardinian Blue Zone. The study’s primary finding concerns a short, recent period. Its conclusions also shift with the years examined: a 2015–2019 sensitivity analysis showed a less favorable late-life survival profile in Bolotana than the historical estimate for the original Sardinian Blue Zone, and including 2020 modestly reduced the estimates.

The original Blue Zone comparison combines estimates for 14 municipalities over 2015–2019. It is therefore a historical benchmark, not a contemporaneous control group for Bolotana’s 2021–2025 results. Differences in period, population, and measurement mean the comparison should not be read as a direct head-to-head test.

The paper also reports a separate birth-cohort finding: of 3,060 people born in Bolotana from 1900 through 1925, 38 were documented to have reached 100. Its Extreme Longevity Index was 1,242 centenarians per 100,000 live births (exact 95% CI 880–1,701). This historical cohort measure is distinct from the period life-table estimates; the two figures answer different questions and should not be combined.

How the researchers assembled the evidence

The authors built the demographic analysis from municipal civil records and describe validating ages with civil and parish records. That record-based reconstruction is important in a study of extreme old age, where an incorrect date of birth can materially affect the count. Study lead scientist Gianni Pes, of the University of Sassari, said the notable feature was not only the level of longevity but how well it could be reconstructed from independent historical sources.

Even careful record validation does not turn a short period estimate into a settled long-term trend. The authors conclude that “Longer observation and continued demographic validation, are required before Bolotana can be considered an established longevity blue zone.”

What might explain the female-skewed pattern?

The contemporary results are most striking for women: their estimated survival from 70 to 100 is higher than the corresponding male estimate. That pattern contrasts with the historically identified Sardinian Blue Zone, known for exceptional male longevity and a comparatively small sex difference. It is not evidence that Sardinian longevity has one shared cause or follows the same pattern everywhere.

The study raises genetic, dietary, physical-activity, family-support, social-cohesion, residential-continuity, and care-access factors as possible explanations. It does not test which, if any, produced Bolotana’s estimates or establish their relative importance. A 2025 study of older adults in the established Sardinian Blue Zone reported that women in that population had a more active lifestyle and that cognitive functioning was associated with moderate-to-vigorous activity. Those findings concern a different population and do not explain Bolotana’s results.

How to interpret claims about Bolotana

  • “Survival to 100” is conditional: the 13.83% figure starts with women who have reached 70; it is not a village-wide lifetime forecast.
  • “Candidate Blue Zone” is the warranted description: the authors do not consider the status established.
  • “Possible explanation” is not “proven cause”: this is a demographic study, not a lifestyle experiment or intervention trial.
  • Period matters: the favorable 2021–2025 estimates do not erase the less favorable period-matched 2015–2019 comparison.

Interviewed separately, Blue Zones project leader Dan Buettner described Bolotana as “the most extraordinary blue zone” by some measures and said its centenarian count was growing. That is his characterization, not the peer-reviewed paper’s settled conclusion. For now, the study supports a narrower claim: Bolotana merits continued observation as a possible longevity hotspot, particularly because of its recent estimates for women.
