Start with Movie or, when available for the content, FILMMAKER MODE. Then change only the controls that solve a visible problem: set the screen’s light output for your room, evaluate HDR tone mapping separately, keep color changes restrained, and use Game Mode when response time matters more than extra processing. There is no reliable universal number for every TCL Mini-LED television because TCL says available options depend on the content, input, picture mode, software and model.
The practical order below follows TCL’s own descriptions of its controls. Menu names and locations can differ between Google TV and Roku televisions and between model families, so use your exact model’s on-screen labels as the authority. TCL’s general settings guide documents the variation explicitly: Available options may vary depending on the content, input, picture mode, and TV model.

Before changing anything, identify the picture context
Picture controls are not always global. TCL documents settings that can be stored separately for each input and picture mode. A change made while watching a streaming app may not appear on a game console connected to HDMI, and a change in Movie mode may not affect Game or another preset. Write down the source you are adjusting—internal app, HDMI device, antenna or another input—and note whether the material is SDR or HDR.
Open the TV’s picture menu while the problem is visible. Menus can expose different options depending on the active signal, so looking at an SDR show and an HDR game may present different controls. If you cannot find a setting named in this guide, that does not necessarily indicate a fault; it may be unavailable for your model, software version, input or current content. TCL’s video-settings guidance explains this model and software variation.

Choose the right picture mode first
Picture mode is the largest single change because it loads a group of processing choices. For conventional film and television viewing, begin with Movie. If your television offers FILMMAKER MODE and the program is supported, use it when you want the creator’s intended picture style with fewer presentation-oriented alterations. Availability varies by model and content. TCL describes Vivid as enhancing color and contrast, while Standard is an everyday balance; either can be appropriate if you prefer a brighter or more forceful presentation, but they may look more processed than Movie or FILMMAKER MODE. TCL’s Google TV guide and the QM8K user guide describe these mode roles.
| Viewing situation | Starting mode | Why | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Films and scripted shows | Movie | A film-oriented baseline | Adjust brightness or color only if the room or your preference requires it. |
| Supported creator-focused content | FILMMAKER MODE | Designed to present the creator’s picture style | The option may not appear for every model or signal. |
| Bright, casual daytime viewing | Standard or another preferred preset | Standard is described by TCL as an everyday balance | Confirm that extra brightness is not crushing shadow detail. |
| Maximum visual punch | Vivid | Enhances color and contrast | Skin tones, highlights and dark scenes can look less natural. |
| Games | Game mode, when offered | Reduces processing when responsiveness matters | Some image-processing controls may be disabled or changed. |
Set screen light output for the room
Do not treat every “brightness” label as the same adjustment. TCL separates controls that determine overall screen light or backlight behavior from Brightness or Black Level, which affect the dark end of the image, and Contrast, which affects the bright end. The exact labels differ by platform and model.
Overall screen brightness or backlight
Use the control that changes the panel’s overall light output when the entire picture is too dim or tiringly bright. Raise it for a sunlit room if shadow detail is difficult to see; lower it at night if a bright screen causes eye strain. Make the change while viewing normal content rather than a settings screen, and avoid chasing the appearance of another television in a different room.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBrightness or Black Level
If blacks look gray and lifted, or if shadow detail disappears, inspect Brightness or Black Level rather than immediately changing the backlight. A setting that is too low can merge dark clothing, hair and background detail; a setting that is too high can make black bars and shadows look washed out. Use a scene containing both near-black detail and a true black area to check the result.

Contrast
Contrast changes the bright portion of the signal. If white shirts, clouds or specular highlights lose texture, reduce Contrast or another highlight-related control. If the image lacks impact without clipping detail, a small increase may help. TCL’s manuals explain the roles of these controls but do not prescribe one value for every Mini-LED model, room or picture mode.
Handle HDR as its own adjustment
HDR can invoke a different picture mode and a different set of controls from SDR. Switch to an actual HDR program or game before evaluating HDR settings; otherwise you may be changing the wrong context.
Dynamic Tone Mapping
TCL describes Dynamic Tone Mapping as balancing HDR brightness and detail. It can change how the television maps bright source highlights to the panel’s available range. The preferred behavior depends on the mastering of the title, your room and the television’s model. If highlights look too subdued in a bright room, inspect this setting; if bright areas appear unnaturally boosted or fine highlight texture disappears, compare the alternate option using the same scene.

On models that expose Peak Luminance, the control affects maximum brightness in local-dimming areas. Use it only when you can identify a reason, such as insufficient highlight impact in HDR. Raising it is not automatically better: excessive emphasis can make small bright objects distractingly intense or reveal blooming in difficult scenes. The QM8K documentation lists Peak Luminance among its model-specific controls; other TCL Mini-LED families may use different labels or omit it. QM8K Series user guide

Local Contrast
Local Contrast controls how the backlight and signal contrast are adjusted by area. It is related to Mini-LED dimming, but it is not the same as the global Contrast control. If bright subtitles, stars or windows cause distracting changes across nearby dark areas, compare Local Contrast settings with the same scene. If the picture lacks separation between a bright subject and its background, a different level may improve perceived contrast. Stop when the specific artifact is gone; there is no evidence that one setting is optimal for every TCL model.
| Visible issue | Control family to inspect | Evaluation method |
|---|---|---|
| HDR highlights look weak | Dynamic Tone Mapping, Peak Luminance | Use a scene with sun, lamps or reflections and check whether texture remains visible. |
| Bright objects cause distracting changes in dark areas | Local Contrast and related dimming behavior | Watch subtitles or a star field against a dark background. |
| Dark detail is missing | Brightness/Black Level, then tone mapping | Look for texture in hair, clothing and shadowed rooms. |
| Black areas look gray | Brightness/Black Level and room light | Compare black bars or a dark pause screen without changing the source. |
Keep color changes modest
Color Temperature
Color Temperature shifts the overall warm-to-cool balance. A warmer option can make white appear less blue; a cooler option can look brighter or cleaner to some viewers. Judge it with neutral objects and skin tones, not only a colorful animation. Give your eyes time to adapt before deciding that a neutral-looking mode is “too yellow.”
Color Saturation
Color Saturation changes color intensity. Increase it only when familiar material looks obviously muted, and reduce it when grass, clothing or faces look unnaturally vivid. Saturation cannot restore color information that was absent from a compressed source.

Adaptive Color Temperature
Some TCL televisions offer Adaptive Color Temperature, which can respond to ambient room light. That may make the picture change as lamps are switched on or daylight fades. If you need a consistent reference while adjusting other controls, temporarily disable the adaptive behavior if your model allows it; re-enable it later if you prefer its automatic response.

Do not enter white-balance, color-space or individual-channel values copied from another TCL model. The available controls and panel behavior differ, and the supplied TCL documentation does not establish universal calibration numbers for Mini-LED televisions.
Choose how much motion processing you want
Motion controls are a preference trade-off rather than a universal quality upgrade. TCL describes Motion Clarity as adding compensation to reduce judder or blur. Higher or stronger compensation can make pans look smoother, but some viewers dislike the hyper-smooth “video” appearance or may notice processing artifacts around moving subjects.
LED Motion Clear, where available, uses the backlight to affect moving-image clarity. It can change perceived motion sharpness and may also change screen brightness or introduce flicker that is noticeable to sensitive viewers. Test it with a slow camera pan and fast sports action. Keep the setting that looks natural to you; do not enable every motion option simply because it exists.

Use Game Mode when responsiveness is the priority
Game Mode reduces some image processing to lower input lag on supported inputs. TCL’s Roku instructions describe it as available through HDMI and AV inputs for the referenced platform, but your television may use a different path or support a different set of signals. Verify the exact model’s menu and the console or PC input you are using. TCL’s settings instructions

- Connect the console or PC to the input you intend to use.
- Select that input and open the Picture menu.
- Choose Game or Game Mode, if your model offers it.
- Check whether refresh-rate, variable-refresh or sync options appear for that signal.
- Play a responsive game and confirm that controls feel immediate without introducing unwanted flicker or image changes.
Some newer TCL guides list Game Direct Sync for certain gaming signals. Treat that as model- and signal-specific, not as a feature every TCL Mini-LED television shares. Game Mode can disable or alter motion smoothing, local processing or other enhancements; that is the intended trade-off for responsiveness.
Apply settings to every source deliberately
After adjusting one input, test each source you actually use. TCL’s Google TV guidance can offer choices to apply picture settings to the current input or to all inputs. Applying globally is convenient, but it may overwrite a carefully tuned game or HDR setup. Applying only to the current input is safer when different devices need different behavior. TCL Google TV video settings
- Finish the adjustment while the intended input and picture mode are active.
- Open the setting that applies picture changes to the current input or all inputs, if shown.
- Choose the narrower current-input option when you want to preserve other sources.
- Repeat the check with every HDMI device, internal streaming app and HDR source.
- Recheck after changing picture mode, because modes may maintain separate values.
Troubleshoot by symptom instead of copying a preset
| Symptom | First checks | Likely next step |
|---|---|---|
| Picture is too dark in daytime | Confirm the active mode and overall screen-light control. | Raise room-appropriate light output, then inspect HDR tone mapping for HDR content. |
| Night viewing is harsh | Check overall light output before changing black level. | Lower the screen’s light output and preserve shadow detail with a familiar dark scene. |
| Faces look orange or blue | Check Color Temperature and Saturation. | Return both toward the starting mode and change one at a time; inspect Adaptive Color Temperature if the look changes with room light. |
| Sports look unnaturally smooth | Check Motion Clarity. | Reduce or disable compensation and compare a slow pan. |
| Game controls feel delayed | Confirm the correct HDMI input and active picture mode. | Enable Game Mode and verify that the signal is using the expected refresh or sync feature. |
| Settings seem to have disappeared | Check input, SDR/HDR state and picture mode. | Reapply the change in that exact context; TCL stores some adjustments per input and mode. |
| Menu option is missing | Check the model, software, input and current content. | Consult the model’s guide; TCL says options vary across these conditions. |
What not to change without model-specific evidence
- Do not copy numeric brightness, gamma, Local Contrast or Peak Luminance values from another TCL Mini-LED model.
- Do not assume a setting shown in the QM8K guide exists on every TCL Mini-LED family.
- Do not use a single HDR scene to decide that one tone-mapping choice is universally correct.
- Do not confuse a brighter picture with more accurate detail; check whether highlights and shadows retain texture.
- Do not buy calibration hardware merely to choose these basic picture settings. The documented controls do not require an accessory.
Official TCL manuals describe what the controls do, but they do not publish a measured, cross-model statistic showing how much a given setting improves image quality. Any precise calibration value should therefore be tied to the exact television, picture mode, software, room and measurement method—not presented as a general TCL Mini-LED rule.
