For a new LEMP server in 2026, start with PHP 8.5 if your application, extensions and Linux distribution packages support it. Use PHP 8.4 when testing finds a compatibility blocker, and attach a dated plan to move to 8.5. Do not choose PHP 8.2 for a new deployment: upstream security support ends on 31 December 2026.

The important detail is that a PHP branch is not “set and forget.” Security fixes are delivered in patch releases, so the PHP-FPM packages behind Nginx must be updated promptly even when you remain on the same major-minor branch.

These dates follow the PHP Group’s support table. Each branch receives two years of active support followed by two years of critical-security support. The end date is branch-level; individual fixes still arrive as point releases.
Why PHP-FPM version selection matters on LEMP
LEMP normally means Linux, Nginx, a database such as MySQL or MariaDB, and PHP. Nginx does not execute PHP code itself. It forwards requests to PHP-FPM, a FastCGI process manager that runs the selected PHP interpreter in one or more pools. Consequently, changing the PHP version means changing the FPM packages, pool configuration and Unix socket or TCP endpoint that Nginx uses.

A branch with a long support horizon reduces the frequency of disruptive migrations. It also gives framework and extension maintainers more time to publish compatible releases. However, the newest branch can expose removed behavior, stricter typing, changed defaults or an extension that has not been rebuilt for that runtime. The correct decision balances support lifetime against the application’s actual dependency graph, not a benchmark number.
PHP 8.5: the default when your stack is ready
Support runway
PHP 8.5 is the newest supported branch in the 2026 decision window and has upstream security support through 31 December 2029. That is the longest runway of the available candidates, making it the sensible starting point for a new server that you expect to operate for several years.
Production readiness is a compatibility question
“Stable enough” does not mean that every application can switch without testing. A production-ready 8.5 deployment requires compatible framework code, Composer dependencies, native and PECL extensions, deployment scripts, queue workers, cron jobs and observability tooling. Test the complete request path rather than only running php -v on the command line.
The PHP Group listed PHP 8.5.11 as released on 24 September 2026. That release date is a reminder to use the current patch in the 8.5 branch, not the first 8.5 package you installed. Your distribution may publish a differently timed package, so check the repository’s version and changelog before a cutover.

When 8.5 is the right answer
- The framework and all production dependencies declare support for PHP 8.5.
- Required extensions are available for your Linux distribution and can be installed at the matching ABI.
- Staging tests pass with the same Nginx, PHP-FPM pool and OPcache settings planned for production.
- Your deployment tooling, workers and scheduled jobs run successfully under the new interpreter.
PHP 8.4: the practical compatibility fallback
PHP 8.4 remains supported through 31 December 2028. Select it when a specific application or extension blocks 8.5, but treat that choice as a managed compatibility decision rather than an indefinite preference. Record which dependency prevents the upgrade, who owns the fix and the date when you will retest 8.5.
Running 8.4 can be safer than forcing an untested 8.5 migration into production. It still gives a substantial security-support window, while allowing time to update a framework, replace an abandoned extension or wait for a distribution package. Keep an 8.5 staging path alive during this period; otherwise the eventual upgrade accumulates several years of changes and becomes riskier.
Why PHP 8.3 and 8.2 are poor choices for a new server
PHP 8.3
PHP 8.3 receives upstream security support until 31 December 2027. That may be acceptable for an existing host that needs a carefully staged intermediate step, but a new 2026 deployment would begin with a relatively short remaining lifecycle. You would be scheduling another major-minor migration sooner than necessary.
PHP 8.2
PHP 8.2 reaches the end of upstream security support on 31 December 2026. It should not be selected for a new LEMP server unless an exceptional legacy constraint leaves no alternative and you have a near-term replacement plan. A supported Linux package does not extend upstream PHP security coverage beyond that date.

Distribution packages and extension availability
Linux distributions do not necessarily ship every PHP branch in their default repositories at the same time. The repository you use must provide the branch, FPM service, development headers and every extension your application needs. Check package policy and dependency metadata before building the host; do not discover an unavailable extension during the production change window.
Package availability also affects patch speed. A branch can be upstream-supported while your distribution is still preparing a point release. Use a maintained repository appropriate for your distribution, pin the source and package policy you have tested, and monitor security notices from both the PHP project and the operating-system vendor.

A safe PHP-FPM and Nginx rollout
1. Inventory the application
- Record the framework version, Composer platform requirement and every runtime extension, including database drivers, image libraries, internationalization, archive support and opcode caching.
- List web requests, CLI commands, queue consumers, cron tasks and background workers. A worker that stays alive for hours can reveal compatibility problems that a single HTTP request misses.
- Capture the current FPM pool names, process limits, environment variables, timeout values and the socket or TCP address referenced by Nginx.
- Confirm that your deployment and rollback tools can install the selected branch and restore the previous FPM configuration.
2. Build a matching staging host
Create a staging LEMP host with PHP 8.5, the same Linux family, Nginx configuration, database engine, extensions and FPM pool design planned for production. Avoid testing only on a developer laptop: operating-system packages, filesystem permissions, service users and socket paths can change behavior.
On Ubuntu or a Debian-derived system, package names commonly include the branch, so inspect the repository before installing. For example, check the candidate with a package-policy command such as apt-cache policy php8.5-fpm, then install the FPM package and required modules from the repository you intend to keep in production. Exact package names vary by distribution and repository.

3. Test the complete workload
- Exercise login, checkout, uploads, API endpoints and other critical user journeys.
- Run integration tests against the real database schema and external services.
- Process representative queue messages and execute scheduled jobs.
- Confirm that OPcache is enabled with the intended memory, validation and restart settings.
- Check FPM saturation, slow requests, memory growth and worker recycling under realistic concurrency.
- Review deprecation notices and warnings; do not dismiss them as harmless if they indicate code paths that will change in a later branch.
4. Point Nginx at the tested pool
Nginx’s PHP location block must use the socket or TCP endpoint belonging to the tested FPM service. A typical socket directive looks like fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php8.5-fpm.sock;, but the actual path is distribution-specific. Verify it on the host instead of copying a path from another system.
After changing the endpoint, validate Nginx before reloading it with nginx -t. Start or enable the matching FPM service through your init system, confirm that the pool is listening, then reload Nginx. Keep the previous pool and configuration available until health checks and representative traffic succeed.

5. Cut over with a rollback path
Deploy during a window in which you can observe application metrics and PHP-FPM logs. Switch the Nginx endpoint to the tested pool, run smoke tests, and watch error rates, latency, worker counts and queue depth. If failures appear, return Nginx to the previous socket or pool, reload it, and preserve the error logs for diagnosis.
6. Keep the branch patched
Apply point releases promptly and repeat smoke tests after updates. Canonical’s Ubuntu advisory for CVE-2026-6735, dated 10 May 2026, listed affected patch levels in PHP 8.2, 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5. The advisory demonstrates why “we are on a supported branch” is not enough: every supported branch still needs current packages.

Socket mismatches
If Nginx reports “connect() to unix socket failed” or returns a 502 response, compare the fastcgi_pass path with the pool’s configured listen value. Check that the socket exists, the FPM service is running and the Nginx user can access it. A version switch often leaves Nginx pointing at the old branch’s socket.
CLI and FPM use different versions
Running php -v checks the command-line binary, not necessarily the interpreter serving web requests. Verify the FPM service and create a temporary, access-controlled diagnostic endpoint only if your operational policy permits it. Remove diagnostic output after confirmation; exposing runtime details publicly increases attack surface.
Missing or mismatched extensions
A successful FPM start does not prove that every module is loaded. Compare the extension list in staging and production, check application startup logs and run the framework’s dependency checks. Install the module built for the selected branch rather than reusing binaries from another PHP version.
Pool limits and timeouts
Higher PHP versions do not automatically fix an undersized pool. If requests queue or workers are killed, inspect pm.max_children, process memory, request termination limits and Nginx FastCGI timeouts together. Change one setting at a time in staging, then carry the measured configuration into production.
Operational checklist for 2026
- Choose PHP 8.5 first; document the exact dependency if you select 8.4 instead.
- Do not start a new deployment on PHP 8.2 with its 31 December 2026 upstream security end date.
- Verify repository support for FPM and every required extension on your Linux distribution.
- Test HTTP, CLI, workers, queues, cron and integrations on a matching staging host.
- Confirm OPcache, pool limits, socket permissions and Nginx configuration before cutover.
- Pin package sources and retain a tested rollback configuration.
- Monitor PHP-FPM logs and apply point-release security updates throughout the branch lifecycle.

Can one LEMP host run two PHP branches during a migration?
Yes. Install separate FPM services and pools, give each a distinct Unix socket or TCP listener, and route selected Nginx server blocks or paths to the appropriate pool. Keep the split temporary and document which application traffic uses each branch.
How can I confirm which PHP-FPM branch serves a virtual host?
Check that virtual host’s Nginx fastcgi_pass target, then match it to the listen directive in the FPM pool configuration and the running service status. The command-line php -v result alone cannot establish the web runtime.

No. The default repository choice is separate from PHP’s upstream lifecycle. Use a maintained package source that supports your distribution, verify extension availability and security-update delivery, and test the exact packages before production use.
