Before you travel, check your carrier’s rules for your destination, then set the phone’s data line and roaming options to match that plan. There is no single safe roaming switch for every phone or carrier: turning Data Roaming off can prevent cellular data charges, but it may also stop data from working when your plan requires roaming.
Check your carrier plan before changing settings
Confirm that your phone and plan work in the destination and that roaming is enabled on your account if required. Ask what you will pay for cellular data, calls, texts and voicemail; whether usage limits apply; and whether a travel package is available. Domestic “unlimited” service does not establish that use abroad is included. The Federal Communications Commission’s international roaming guidance and its Wireless World Travel Made Simple tip sheet recommend understanding rates and rules before you leave.

Coverage and billing depend on the country and the network your phone connects to. Roaming arrangements in the EU and EEA apply only within their defined geographic scope and conditions; do not assume they cover every nearby country, or networks on ships and aircraft. Check the European Union’s roaming information for the relevant destinations and terms.
Which phone settings should you change before using international roaming?
Set Data Roaming for the line you plan to use
On iPhone, open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) and select the relevant line, then check Cellular Data Options for Data Roaming. Labels can vary by region, iOS version and SIM configuration. Apple advises turning roaming off to avoid charges when your carrier does not support it; turn it on after arrival only when your plan and carrier instructions call for it. Check the cellular-data line on a dual-SIM phone
If you use a physical SIM and an eSIM, or two eSIMs, verify which number is selected for cellular data and which is your home line. Roaming controls may apply to a selected line, so do not assume one change governs both. If a travel SIM or eSIM will provide data, ask both providers how to configure the home line; combinations differ by carrier and device.
Use Airplane Mode if you want to block cellular service
Airplane Mode prevents the phone from using cellular networks, including ordinary cellular calls and texts. You can manually turn Wi-Fi back on afterward for internet access and Wi-Fi-based services. The Government of Canada recommends enabling Airplane Mode before crossing a border or taking off, then re-enabling Wi-Fi as needed. See its telecommunications advice for travellers.

Check Wi-Fi Calling instead of assuming it is free
Wi-Fi Calling charges and behavior depend on the carrier and plan. AT&T, for example, gives travelers specific instructions in one circumstance to use Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi and turn off Wi-Fi Calling to avoid unintended charges. That is carrier-specific advice, not a general rule; check your own provider’s terms before relying on Wi-Fi Calling abroad.
Choose between home-carrier roaming, a local SIM and a travel eSIM
Compare options for your actual itinerary rather than assuming one is cheapest. A local SIM or travel eSIM may be suitable for data, but check that the phone is unlocked and supports the SIM or eSIM before buying. Consider:

- Which destinations and networks are covered.
- Total cost, included data and any usage limits.
- Whether voice calls and SMS are available, and how they are billed.
- Whether the phone is unlocked and compatible with the option.
- Whether your home number will remain active and how that line will be billed.
- How easy it is to activate the service and get support.
Options and rates are plan- and destination-specific. The U.S. Department of State also recommends preparing important numbers and messaging access before travel; see its telecommunications guidance.
What to check after arrival
- Confirm the active data line. Make sure the SIM or eSIM you intend to use is selected for cellular data.
- Apply the carrier’s roaming instructions. Enable Data Roaming only on the line if that provider’s plan requires it. If using a travel SIM for data, confirm separately what to do with roaming on your home line.
- Check service and usage. Monitor use against your plan’s limits. An international data allowance can run out or be subject to slower speeds; Apple notes both possibilities in its roaming guidance.
If your iPhone has no service
First check that the relevant line is active and its roaming setting matches your carrier’s instructions. Apple suggests toggling Airplane Mode for about 30 seconds and allowing automatic network selection. These steps may help restore service but cannot guarantee coverage or plan eligibility at your location.

Prepare for a no-cellular fallback
If you may rely on Wi-Fi or need to avoid cellular use entirely, save important contacts and local emergency numbers, and download maps or messages for offline access where appropriate. Remember that Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi re-enabled still does not provide ordinary cellular calls or texts.
