To find a phone that lasts longer between charges, compare standardized battery endurance results and independent tests that resemble how you use a phone. Treat battery capacity in mAh as supporting context—not a runtime score—and assess screen settings, charging compatibility, and battery durability separately.
Start with endurance per charge, not mAh
Battery capacity, usually listed in milliamp-hours (mAh), tells you how much charge a battery is rated to hold. It does not show how efficiently the whole phone uses that charge. The display, processor, software, network connection, and workload all influence how long a phone runs.

Where it applies, the EU smartphone energy label gives a more useful starting point: battery endurance per cycle, expressed in hours and minutes under a standardized test intended to represent a typical situation. The label lists rated battery capacity separately, so use both figures rather than treating one as a substitute for the other. For phones without comparable label data, look for controlled independent tests. A result is useful only when you know what was tested and can judge whether those conditions resemble your own use.

Check whether a battery test matches your habits
Test results are comparisons under particular conditions, not guarantees of your personal runtime. Before relying on a ranking, check the test workload, screen brightness, refresh-rate setting, and connectivity conditions where these are reported.
For example, Tom’s Guide says its continuous web-browsing test uses 150 nits of display brightness and that refresh rate can affect endurance; its rankings use phones’ default refresh settings. That is one publisher’s methodology, not a universal standard. If you typically use a brighter screen, a different refresh rate, or a more demanding workload, the result may not predict your experience. Read its battery-test methodology and rankings as a like-for-like comparison, not a promise of hours for every owner.
Understand how the screen affects runtime
The screen is a major part of how you use a phone, and its settings matter when comparing endurance results. Brightness and refresh rate can change power use, so compare phones under similar settings where possible. Consider your own habits too: a phone used outdoors at high brightness or set to a higher refresh rate may not match a test conducted at lower brightness and default settings.

When a test does not disclose its settings, treat its result as less informative for a precise comparison. Do not assume that a phone with a larger battery will necessarily outlast one with a smaller battery; the whole device and the test conditions matter.
Keep charging speed separate from battery life
Charging answers how quickly you can replenish a phone; endurance answers how long it lasts before you need to recharge. A faster charger can reduce time at an outlet, but it does not extend runtime between charges. Check the exact phone model’s supported charging standard and power requirements before choosing a charger. The EU label and product information are useful starting points for checking the device’s specifications.
Consider battery durability if you plan to keep the phone
A single-charge endurance result is different from how well a battery retains capacity over repeated use. For smartphones covered by the EU Ecodesign rules, the regulation specifies at least 800 charge cycles while retaining 80% of the battery’s original capacity under defined test conditions. This is a regulatory threshold, not a precise forecast of how many years an individual phone’s battery will last.
