Turn on your phone’s built-in Night mode or Night Sight, support the phone until the capture finishes, and compare the saved telephoto image with a 1x shot. A longer night capture can brighten a still scene, but it can also blur a moving subject. The available controls—and whether zoom uses a dedicated telephoto lens—depend on the phone.
Start with Night mode, then confirm it is active
In dim conditions, use the camera app’s built-in night capture mode rather than assuming the regular Photo setting will produce the best result. On supported iPhones, Night mode can turn on automatically when the camera detects low light. On Pixel phones, Night Sight is available in the mode carousel and may activate automatically in low-light Photo or Portrait modes. The exact behavior depends on the model and camera software.

A night photo may take several seconds to capture. On supported iPhones, tap the Night mode control to adjust the capture time; the Max option allows a longer capture when available. Keep the phone still until the capture is complete.

Longer capture time is most useful when both the phone and subject can remain still. A person, animal, or other moving subject may blur even if the phone is on a tripod. The official guidance does not establish one shutter-speed value that works across phone models. Apple explains its controls and stability recommendations in its Night mode support page.
Compare the telephoto view with 1x
Zooming in does not guarantee that your phone is using a dedicated telephoto camera, or that the telephoto result will look best in low light. Pixel phones can select a lens automatically when you zoom, and Google documents manual lens selection on some models. Google also identifies the 1x wide camera as its best low-light performer in its Pixel guidance; that is Pixel-specific advice, not a rule for every phone.

- Frame the distant subject at the phone’s native telephoto setting, if available.
- Take a second photo at 1x without changing the subject or lighting.
- Compare the saved images for subject detail, blur, visible grain, and framing. Do not judge only by how bright the preview looks.
Check your camera’s lens indicator if it provides one, but treat the saved-image comparison as the practical test. The camera may switch lenses or use computational zoom depending on the device. See Google’s Pixel camera lens and zoom guidance.

Keep the phone steady through the whole capture
Rest the phone on a secure surface, use a stand, or mount it on a compatible phone tripod. A timer can help prevent movement caused by tapping the shutter: Google recommends a three-second timer for night-sky captures. Apple also recommends supporting the phone securely for Night mode photos. Support reduces camera movement; it cannot freeze a moving subject.

- Keep the phone supported until the camera indicates that capture is finished.
- Use a timer when touching the shutter could jostle the phone.
- If using a tripod, check that its mount fits your phone; a tripod improves stability but does not guarantee a sharp image.

Low-light photos can come out dark, grainy, or blurry. If the image is blurred, consider whether the phone moved or the subject moved during the longer capture. If it looks grainy or lacks detail, compare the telephoto frame with 1x; the phone’s lens choice and image processing affect the result. Google’s Pixel Camera troubleshooting guidance describes common low-light image problems.

Make the comparison using the saved photos at the same viewing size. A brighter result is not necessarily the sharper or more detailed one, and a wider 1x frame may simply include less of the distant subject.
