If an e-bike battery will not charge, appears dead, or feels unusually hot, start with the manual for your exact bike, battery, and charger. Confirm the power and connections, then follow only that system’s reset or error-code instructions. Stop charging and contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer if the battery is damaged, stays hot, or remains unusable; do not open or try to rebuild the pack.

What to check first when an e-bike battery will not charge

Before diagnosing a battery fault, find the current manual for the bike and battery system. Charging methods, indicator behavior, error codes, and recovery steps differ by brand and model. Check that the wall outlet works, the correct charger is being used, and its connections are seated firmly at the outlet and battery or bike charging port. Some systems allow charging on or off the bike; use the method specified in the manual.

  1. Confirm the charger is correct. Use the charger supplied with the e-bike or a replacement whose compatibility has been confirmed for the exact system. Trek’s 2026 owner manual warns that the wrong charger can shorten battery life and create a potential fire hazard. Read Trek’s owner manuals for the relevant model; for other brands, consult that manufacturer’s manual.
  2. Check the outlet and connections. Unplug and reconnect the charger, and make sure any adapter is securely attached. Inspect the connection for visible dirt or damage without forcing a plug or using a tool to probe the port.
  3. Clean only as directed by the system maker. Shimano’s FAQ recommends cleaning the connection terminal with a clean rag or cotton swab soaked with ethanol. That instruction is specific to Shimano’s guidance; do not assume it applies to other brands or use liquid on a connection unless the relevant manual permits it. See Shimano’s E-BIKE SYSTEMS FAQ.
  4. Try the approved charging setup again. If charging still fails, stop troubleshooting and contact the place of purchase, the manufacturer, or an authorized service provider. A charger, port, battery, temperature condition, or system fault may be involved; the connection checks alone cannot identify which.

Battery will not charge even though it is connected

Shimano’s FAQ says that if its battery still does not charge after checking the charger and connection, the battery may have reached the end of its service life. This is a possibility, not a confirmed diagnosis: ask the seller or distributor to check the battery and charger before replacing either one. If a replacement is needed, confirm the exact battery or charger model and compatibility with the bike’s system through the manufacturer or an authorized dealer.

Battery LEDs do not respond or the battery seems dead

If the battery belongs to a Bosch system covered by Bosch’s support guidance, Bosch specifies this recovery sequence for an unresponsive battery:

  1. Remove the battery from the bike.
  2. Press and hold the battery’s power button for 15 seconds.
  3. If it remains unresponsive, leave it disconnected from the bike for at least one hour.
  4. Reconnect it to the Bosch charger. If charging resumes, charge it fully.
  5. If it still cannot be charged or used without restriction, contact a Bosch specialist dealer.

These steps are Bosch-specific, not a general reset for e-bike batteries. Do not apply them to another brand unless its manual directs you to do so. See Bosch’s guidance for a battery that is not working.

Battery does not show full after charging

Shimano describes a specific case in which a battery that self-discharged after being fully charged, with no assist operation in between, may not show as fully charged after the next recharge. Shimano says this does not necessarily indicate a malfunction and recommends using assist before charging again. This explanation applies to the situation described in Shimano’s FAQ; check the exact battery’s manual if the indicator behavior differs or the problem persists. Read Shimano’s E-BIKE SYSTEMS FAQ.

Battery or charger feels unusually hot

Stop charging if the battery or charger is unusually hot. Shimano says battery surface temperature may exceed 60°C depending on conditions and advises stopping and waiting before charging again. A battery that is deformed or remains hot for a while after charging is abnormal; contact the place of purchase or a Shimano distributor rather than continuing to use it. See Shimano’s battery guidance.

For Trek Hyena error 68, Trek’s system-specific instructions say to stop charging, turn off the e-bike, move it to a ventilated area at room temperature for at least ten minutes, and retry. If the error persists, follow Trek’s next steps for that system, which include battery replacement and service support. This procedure is not a general cooling or temperature rule for other e-bikes. See Trek’s e-bike FAQ and troubleshooting guidance.

Hyena error What Trek says it means Trek’s guidance
66 Low battery at 4%. Charge as soon as possible to avoid reaching empty-battery error 67.
67 Empty battery at 2%. Charge above 10%, then reboot and check whether the error remains. If charging fails, Trek’s troubleshooting proceeds to checking or replacing the charger, checking the frame charging socket where that charging arrangement applies, updating battery firmware through the Trek Dealer Service Tool, and replacing the battery or contacting support as needed.

Follow the linked Trek instructions for the exact Hyena model; do not use these thresholds to interpret another system’s battery indicator. See Trek’s e-bike error guidance.

Charge safely and avoid risky battery repairs

  • Charge only with the charger supplied with the e-bike or a replacement confirmed as compatible with the exact system. Trek’s 2026 owner manual warns that an incorrect charger can affect battery life and pose a potential fire hazard.
  • Charge indoors in a dry area, do not leave a charging battery unattended, and disconnect the charger from both the battery and wall socket when charging is complete, as directed in Trek’s manual.
  • Do not short-circuit or puncture a battery. Trek warns that a severely impacted pack could, in an extremely rare case, catch fire.
  • Do not open the battery, bypass its protection electronics, jump-start it, or attempt to rebuild it. Use the manufacturer, seller, distributor, or authorized dealer process for unresolved faults.

Read the relevant Trek owner manual or consult the manual and service channel for your own bike.

Charging time and whether the battery must be removed

Trek’s U.S. e-bike FAQ estimates approximately 3–5 hours for a charge, depending on the battery’s starting state and the charger, and notes that larger batteries take longer. This is a Trek estimate, not a charge-time promise for other brands or battery sizes. Trek also says its e-bikes can be charged without removing the battery and that pedaling does not charge the battery. For another system, follow its manual. See Trek’s e-bike FAQ.

When to stop troubleshooting and get service

Contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer if the battery remains unresponsive or will not charge after the manual’s checks, an error persists after the brand’s prescribed steps, or the battery is deformed or stays hot after charging. Bring the bike, battery, and charger details, along with any displayed error code. If replacement is suggested, have the service provider verify the exact system model, approved charging method, compatibility, and warranty or service route before you buy a part.
