Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no universal list of app categories that should not be on every phone. Review each app you no longer use, do not recognize, or no longer trust: check what it does, what it can access, and what its privacy disclosures say. Then choose the right action—remove its icon, limit its access, reduce distractions, or delete it—after checking whether you rely on it or need its account data.
Decide what you want to change
“Clean up my phone” can mean several different things. Removing an icon is not the same as uninstalling an app, and uninstalling is not the only way to address privacy or distraction. Match the action to the problem.

| Goal | What to do | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer icons | Remove the app from the Home Screen or hide it, where available. | Confirm whether it remains installed and where to find it. |
| Less distraction | Use the phone’s screen-time or app-limiting controls. | Blocking, hiding, and deleting are different actions and may have different effects. |
| Less data access | Review and narrow the app’s permissions. | Check whether it needs each permission for the feature you use. |
| Remove an app you no longer need | Uninstall or delete it. | Check for device-stored data, cloud content, account access, and dependencies first. |
Which apps are worth reviewing first?
Start with apps you have not used in a long time, apps you cannot identify, and apps whose purpose or developer you no longer trust. An app’s category alone—social, shopping, messaging, or utility, for example—is not enough to conclude that it is unsafe or should be removed. The more useful questions are whether you recognize it, still need it, trust its data practices, and consider its permissions appropriate.
- Unused: If you cannot recall the last time you needed it, check whether removing it would affect a service or stored content you rely on.
- Unfamiliar: Find out what it is and how it arrived on the phone before deciding whether to keep it.
- Over-permissioned: If an app requests access that does not fit the feature you use, consider denying or narrowing that access.
- Distracting: You may benefit more from limiting or blocking it than from deleting it.
- Untrusted: Review its privacy disclosures and consider whether its behavior matches what you expect.
Check permissions and privacy disclosures
On iPhone, review app access in Settings > Privacy & Security. Apple says users can change permissions for information such as location and photos; location access can be limited to while an app is in use on iOS 11 or later. Android’s privacy controls include approximate versus precise location, and Android describes automatic permission resets for apps that have not been used for a while. Menu names and available controls can vary by device and software version.

Privacy labels and disclosures can help you decide what to investigate, but they are not proof that an app is safe or a guarantee that every relevant practice is covered. Apple says App Store privacy labels report developer-provided information about data use, including whether data is used to track users. Google Play’s Data safety section is another place Google directs users to review information about an app’s data practices.
On iPhone, tracking choices are separate from all other data collection. Apple’s control concerns cross-company tracking as Apple defines it; declining a tracking request does not mean an app collects no data. Apple says, “You can still use the full capabilities of the app, regardless of whether you allow the app to track your activity.” To review individual choices, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.

On iPhone: remove, limit, or delete
- For fewer icons: Remove the app from the Home Screen. It moves to the App Library rather than being deleted.
- For less distraction: Consider Screen Time controls. Apple also documents options to lock or hide apps; these are distinct from removing an app from the Home Screen or deleting it.
- For less access: Open Settings > Privacy & Security and review the app’s permissions. For tracking choices, use Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
- To uninstall: Delete the app when you are ready to remove it and its data stored on the device. Apple says data stored in iCloud, such as photos or documents saved through the app, is not deleted just because you delete the app. You may be able to reinstall the app if it remains available in the App Store.
On Android: review unused apps and permissions
- Open Apps > Unused apps to review apps covered by Android’s unused-app feature. Menu labels may differ by device.
- Check what the optimization does before treating it as an uninstall. Google says it can delete temporary files, revoke permissions, stop background activity, and stop notifications. You can review affected apps and exempt a particular app from pause behavior.
- Review permissions through Android’s privacy settings. Consider whether approximate location is enough instead of precise location, and whether an app needs each permission for the feature you use.
- Before keeping or installing an app, consult its Google Play Data safety section as one input into your decision.
Check dependencies and stored data before deleting
Before removing an app, check whether you rely on it for accessibility, health, safety, authentication, work, travel, or access to saved information. Make sure you know how to recover the account or complete the task another way. Deleting an app may not close its account, cancel a service, or erase information stored by the provider; check the app’s account and data options if those outcomes matter.

- Can you identify the app and explain why you still need it?
- Do its permissions fit the features you use?
- Have you checked the relevant app-store privacy disclosures without treating them as a safety guarantee?
- Would hiding the app or limiting its access solve the problem without deleting it?
- Could deletion affect an account, local files, cloud content, or an important task?
If you cannot identify an app, do not trust it, and do not need it, deletion may be sensible after checking dependencies and data. If the issue is only clutter or distraction, a less disruptive control may be enough.
