Some over-ear headphones can be a better fit than Bose for particular kinds of listening, but there is no reliable brand-wide ranking. The clearest alternatives in current expert coverage are specific Sennheiser and Audio-Technica models for listening in quiet rooms or wired use, plus a Sony model if you want wireless noise cancellation. The right choice depends on whether you mean tonal balance and detail, spaciousness, or a travel-friendly mix of sound and isolation.
What “better audio quality” means in this comparison
Sound quality is not one universal score. A headphone may be preferable for spacious, detailed listening while another is more practical on a commute because it seals out noise and works wirelessly. Compare the model’s sound character, open- or closed-back design, connection and noise-cancelling features, intended setting, and fit—not just the brand name.

These examples are supported at the model level. They do not establish that every headphone from a named brand sounds better than every Bose model. Bose remains a relevant option when active noise cancellation (ANC), travel, comfort, and isolation are priorities; those benefits are separate from fidelity.
Which models are worth considering?
Sennheiser HD 800 S: spacious listening at home
For a quiet room and sound-focused listening, the wired, open-back Sennheiser HD 800 S is the strongest audiophile example here. RTINGS identifies it as its best tested audiophile over-ear headphone for sound quality, and highlights its spacious presentation. Its open construction lets sound escape and does not isolate you from the room, so it is a poor match for commuting or a shared office. RTINGS also notes that open-back designs produce less bass than closed-back alternatives. See RTINGS’ audiophile headphone guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Sennheiser HDB 630: a wireless alternative
The HDB 630 gives Sennheiser a different role from the HD 800 S: it is a wireless over-ear model included in What Hi-Fi’s current headphone guide. That makes it relevant if you want a wireless option rather than a passive, open-back headphone. The available evidence does not establish that it has the HD 800 S’s sound character or that it beats Bose across all listening situations. What Hi-Fi describes its review process as weeks of listening, genre-spanning test tracks, and comparisons with current class leaders; those are the publication’s testing practices, not personal testing for this article. Read What Hi-Fi’s over-ear headphone guide.
Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: wired, closed-back versatility
The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x is a wired, closed-back choice for listening or studio use. RTINGS describes its profile as well-balanced overall, with some extra emphasis in the bass that adds warmth; it also notes the model is used across genres and is popular with DJs and in studios. Its bulkier fit may not suit everyone. It is a practical alternative if you want a closed-back wired headphone, not a universal upgrade over Bose. See RTINGS’ ATH-M50x review.
Rank #2
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
Sony WH-CH720N: wireless ANC with energetic sound
The Sony WH-CH720N is a wireless, closed-back ANC model to consider if you want noise reduction alongside an energetic presentation. What Hi-Fi characterizes its sound as forceful and robust, with somewhat over-enthusiastic bass. That tuning may appeal to listeners who like a lively, bass-forward sound, but it is not the same target as neutral or spacious audiophile listening. What Hi-Fi reports 35 hours of battery life with ANC and Bluetooth on, or 50 hours with both off; those are conditional figures from its guide, not a guarantee for every use or a claim about current performance. Check current manufacturer information before relying on battery life. Consult What Hi-Fi’s current over-ear guide.

| Model | Best-supported fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Sennheiser HD 800 S | Sound-focused listening in a quiet room | Wired and open-back; sound leaks and outside noise is not blocked. |
| Sennheiser HDB 630 | Wireless over-ear listening | Its inclusion in a current guide supports it as an option, but does not make it equivalent to the HD 800 S. |
| Audio-Technica ATH-M50x | Wired listening, DJ, or studio use | Closed-back and broadly balanced, with some bass warmth and a bulkier fit. |
| Sony WH-CH720N | Wireless listening with ANC | Energetic, somewhat bass-heavy sound; reported battery figures depend on ANC and Bluetooth settings. |
How to make the comparison fairly
- Decide where you will listen. For a quiet room, an open-back headphone such as the HD 800 S may suit you. For shared spaces or travel, leakage and isolation matter as much as sound character.
- Choose the connection and features you need. The HD 800 S and ATH-M50x are wired examples; the HDB 630 and WH-CH720N are wireless. The WH-CH720N is the specific ANC example among these models.
- Match the tuning to your taste. The ATH-M50x is broadly balanced with added bass warmth; the WH-CH720N is described as more forceful and bass-forward; the HD 800 S is noted for spaciousness. “Better” depends on which presentation you prefer.
- Consider comfort and fit alongside sound. RTINGS flags the ATH-M50x’s bulkier fit. For any model, fit can affect comfort and how well a closed-back headphone seals.
Why this is not a five-brand ranking
The headline’s “five brands” framing suggests a broader brand-versus-brand verdict than the available model-level evidence supports. Current expert coverage substantiates these specific Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, and Sony examples, not a finding that five brands consistently outperform Bose. BGR’s August 25, 2026 article presents alternatives by brand while also describing Bose as strong in sound quality and noise cancellation; that is editorial framing, not independent proof of a universal ranking.
