Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor occasional phone charging, choose a compact bank with enough capacity for your usual day; for a tablet or laptop, prioritize USB-C Power Delivery and the output wattage your device accepts. There is no universally best power bank: capacity, charging speed, ports, size, and airline limits all affect which one fits. For air travel, check the bank’s marked watt-hour (Wh) rating—not just its mAh—and pack it in your carry-on.
What matters when choosing a power bank?
A power bank is a rechargeable spare battery. Compare the specifications against the device or devices you actually plan to charge; a large capacity number alone does not tell you whether the bank will charge a laptop quickly, fit in your bag, or meet airline requirements.

- Capacity: Higher capacity can provide more stored energy, but often comes with more bulk. Use it to compare likely use, not as a guarantee of an exact number of charges.
- Output and protocol: Check whether the bank supports USB-C Power Delivery (PD), and compare its maximum output in watts with the input supported by your device. A high maximum does not force a device to charge at that rate.
- Ports: Check the port types and how many devices can be connected at once. When charging several devices, confirm whether the bank can supply the needed output across those ports simultaneously.
- Size and weight: For a phone backup you carry every day, a smaller bank may be more useful than a higher-capacity model. For trips or laptop use, the extra capacity and output may justify the added size.
- Travel rating: Look for the bank’s Wh marking. Airline battery rules use watt-hours, and a capacity in mAh by itself is not enough to determine whether a bank falls within a limit.
Which type fits your device?
For occasional phone charging
Favor portability, a suitable cable or port, and enough capacity for your routine. A high-wattage laptop-oriented bank may be unnecessary if you only need a phone top-up; its larger size can be a poor trade for everyday carry.

For a tablet or multiple devices
Check that the bank has the right connectors and enough output for the devices you intend to charge. If you expect to charge several at once, look for information about simultaneous output rather than assuming the maximum wattage is available from every port at the same time.

For a compatible laptop
Confirm the laptop’s USB-C charging requirements, including its accepted input wattage and any protocol requirements, then match those against the power bank and cable. The bank’s stated maximum is only useful if the laptop, port, and cable can support it.
A high-output example: Anker 737 Power Bank
The Anker 737 Power Bank (PowerCore 24K) illustrates the laptop-capable category. Anker lists a 24,000mAh capacity and up to 140W USB-C Power Delivery 3.1 two-way charging. Anker says reaching the full 140W output requires a compatible PD 3.1 cable and a device that accepts that input. These are manufacturer specifications, not an independent measurement, and this model is an example rather than a fit for every phone owner. Check the specifications for the exact regional model and your devices before buying.

The FAA treats power banks as spare lithium-ion batteries for passenger-aircraft rules. Under its passenger guidance, batteries up to 100Wh are generally allowed. A battery rated 101–160Wh requires airline approval, with a limit of two such spare batteries per person. Airlines may impose stricter rules, so confirm the current requirements with the operating carrier.

To calculate watt-hours, multiply volts by amp-hours. If the label gives milliamp-hours, divide that number by 1,000 to convert it to amp-hours first:
Wh = volts × (mAh ÷ 1,000)
For example, the FAA’s calculation for a 12V, 8Ah battery is 12 × 8 = 96Wh. Use the product’s marked Wh value where available and check the relevant airline rule rather than relying on mAh alone.

The FAA says spare batteries, including power banks, must be in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage, and protected against damage and short circuit. Its PackSafe guidance explains the spare-battery requirement; see also the FAA’s passenger battery guidance.
What to do if a battery overheats
Lithium-ion batteries can overheat and enter thermal runaway if damaged, overheated, exposed to water, overcharged, or improperly protected; defects can also cause the problem. The FAA instructs: “Passengers should notify the flight crew immediately if their lithium battery or portable electronic device is overheating, expanding, smoking, or burning.” Follow crew instructions and do not put a suspect battery in checked baggage.
