For most desktop Opera users, the best starting changes are to turn on tracker blocking, decide whether ad blocking suits the sites you use, review third-party cookies and data clearing, and leave camera and location permissions set to ask before access. Use Private windows for reducing data left in Opera after a session—not for anonymity—and treat Opera’s VPN as a change to your browser’s network route, not a substitute for blocking cookies or checking suspicious sites.
Settings names and routes vary by Opera version and platform. The paths below follow Opera’s help documentation; if a label is missing, look in Settings under Privacy, Privacy & security, or Site settings.

Which settings are worth changing first?
Opera separates several controls that are easy to mistake for one another. Tracker blocking targets common tracking methods; ad blocking removes ads and can also block some tracking-cookie sources. Cookie controls govern data stored by websites, while permissions govern access to device features such as the camera and location.
- Enable Block trackers to reduce common tracking from analytics scripts and tracking pixels. Opera describes the feature in its Features documentation.
- Consider Block ads if you want ads blocked as well. Opera provides configurable filter lists and site exceptions; an exception can help when a site stops working as expected. See Opera’s ad-blocking guidance.
- Review cookie settings if you want to limit third-party cookies or clear stored site data when quitting. Both choices can affect sign-ins and site preferences.
- Set camera and location to Ask before accessing, then grant access only to sites that need it. Opera identifies asking before access as its recommended setting in its Web preferences documentation.
On desktop, Opera’s documentation places tracker and ad controls under Settings > Basic > Privacy protection on its Features page, while other help pages direct users through Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Site settings. The routes and labels differ across Opera help pages, so use Settings search or the corresponding privacy and site-permission sections if your version does not match exactly.

Should you block ads and trackers?
Block trackers
Turn on Block trackers if you want Opera to block common tracking methods, including analytics scripts and tracking pixels. It reduces some ways sites can collect information about browsing activity; it does not make you anonymous or prevent every form of identification.
Block ads
Enable Block ads if you also want Opera to block advertising. Opera says its ad blocker can block sources of many tracking cookies, but ad and tracker blocking are separate controls. You can configure filter lists and make exceptions for individual sites when blocking interferes with a page or its features. The exact controls are described in Opera’s Features documentation.

How should you handle cookies and site data?
Opera’s desktop documentation says the default accepts all cookies. In Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Site settings, review the options for blocking third-party cookies and clearing cookies and site data when quitting. Opera documents these controls in Web preferences.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Block third-party cookies to reduce some cross-site data sharing. It may also disrupt embedded content or sign-in flows that rely on those cookies.
- Clear cookies and site data on exit if you prefer not to retain that data between sessions. Expect to lose some saved logins and site preferences.
- Use site-specific exceptions if a cookie rule breaks a site you rely on, rather than weakening the setting everywhere.
These settings govern data stored by sites in Opera; they are not the same as tracker blocking, Private browsing, or the VPN.

What should you do with camera and location permissions?
Check site permissions in Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Site settings, or the equivalent permissions area in your version. For camera and location, Opera recommends Ask before accessing. Review any existing allow-list entries and remove exceptions you no longer want.
Opera’s Web preferences guidance states, “Opera will not share this information without your permission.” Keep in mind that granting a site permission is itself permission to access that feature; only approve it when the site needs it.

What Opera’s VPN does—and does not do
Opera’s browser VPN routes browser traffic through a VPN server, changes the apparent IP address or location websites see, and encrypts the connection between the browser and that server. It can be useful when you want websites to see a different apparent location, but it does not stop a site from recognizing you through cookies or other site data. Opera explains the feature in its Features documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Opera also documents an option to bypass the VPN for default search engines. That can affect whether search requests use the VPN; Opera says this bypass feature is not supported in Private Mode. Check the VPN settings and their current labels in your installed version before relying on a particular route.

When should you use Private browsing?
Use a Private window when you want Opera to clear the session’s browsing history, cache, and cookies after all Private windows are closed. Opera’s Security and privacy documentation describes that local cleanup and notes that deliberately saved items, such as downloads or saved passwords, can remain.
Private browsing is not a promise that websites, network providers, or other parties cannot observe activity. Its documented benefit is clearing specified data from Opera after the Private session ends. For regular windows, Opera also provides clear-browsing-data and clear-on-exit controls.
How should you respond to security warnings?
Opera describes checking pages against databases of known phishing and malware sites and displaying warnings for pages it identifies as suspicious. Those checks cannot catch every dangerous page. Before entering sensitive information, verify the web address and the secure-connection indicator; do not dismiss a browser warning casually. Opera’s explanation is in its Security and privacy documentation.
Does Opera on iPhone use the same settings?
No. Opera has separate iOS settings documentation. Its iOS guidance covers ad blocking, VPN, and cookie-dialog controls, and says enabling cookie-dialog blocking automatically accepts cookies—meaning you agree to cookies being set. Do not assume this mobile behavior or its menu paths apply to desktop Opera. Consult the Opera iOS Settings page for that edition.
