Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges in rendered geometry, anisotropic filtering helps textures on angled surfaces look clearer, and texture quality generally controls how much texture detail is available. They address different parts of the image, so the best setting to adjust depends on what looks wrong in a particular game.
What each setting changes
| Setting | Main target | Where you may notice it |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-aliasing | Jagged edges caused by representing geometry on a pixel grid | Object outlines, railings, and other edges |
| Anisotropic filtering | Texture sampling on surfaces viewed at an angle | Roads, floors, and ground that recede into the distance |
| Texture quality | Generally, the detail or resolution of the textures a game uses | How detailed surfaces appear, especially up close |
The first two settings name rendering or sampling techniques. “Texture Quality” is a menu label whose precise effect is defined by each game, not by one universal standard.

What anti-aliasing does
A screen represents a scene on a grid of pixels. When geometry edges do not line up neatly with that grid, they can appear jagged or stair-stepped. Anti-aliasing aims to reduce that geometric aliasing.
MSAA is one approach, not the definition of every AA option
Microsoft describes multisample anti-aliasing (MSAA) as a way to reduce geometric aliasing and improve image quality. Its Direct3D 12 documentation gives 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, and 16x as illustrative MSAA sample counts; these are examples, not a promise that every game or graphics adapter offers those choices. Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 VRS documentation also describes a supersampling example that can improve quality at a higher performance cost.

A game’s “AA” menu may include different techniques. The label alone does not tell you exactly how one is implemented or what it will cost in that game; the MSAA explanation should not be applied automatically to temporal, post-process, or other methods.
What anisotropic filtering does
Textures can become harder to sample accurately when their surfaces recede at a shallow angle from the viewer. This is why a road or floor may look less distinct farther away even when a nearby part of the same surface looks clear. Anisotropic filtering is designed to improve texture sampling in these angled areas. Microsoft’s explanation of anisotropic texture filtering describes anisotropy as distortion in texels on a surface oriented at an angle to the screen, and notes that anisotropic filtering can be used with linear or mipmap filtering.

Texture quality is different from texture filtering
Texture quality generally concerns the detail or resolution of the texture data available to the game. Texture filtering concerns how the game samples that data to give a rendered pixel its color. In simple terms, quality affects the detail on hand; filtering affects how that detail is displayed as surfaces change size or angle on screen.
Why filtering matters at different distances
When a texture is magnified, multiple screen pixels may map to one texel, making the image look chunky. When a texture is minified, one screen pixel may represent many texels; inadequate sampling can produce blur or aliasing. Microsoft’s texture filtering overview describes filtering as obtaining a color for each rendered pixel from a texture and discusses magnification, minification, and mipmaps. Mipmaps are lower-resolution versions of a texture used at different viewing scales. Filtering methods—including nearest-point, bilinear, anisotropic, and mipmap approaches—handle samples in different ways; the details of the implementation depend on the game and graphics API. Microsoft’s Direct3D 9 filtering explanation is useful technical background, not a guarantee that every current game behaves identically.

Which setting should you adjust?
Start with the visual problem rather than turning every setting up at once:
- Jagged outlines on objects: Try the game’s anti-aliasing options.
- Blurry textures on a road, floor, or other angled surface: Try anisotropic filtering.
- Surfaces lack detail even when viewed nearby: Inspect texture quality.
Change one option at a time, compare the same scene, and observe both image quality and frame rate or smoothness. This makes it easier to tell what actually changed; results can differ between games.

Does one setting always cost more performance?
No universal ranking is established for these three settings. Performance and image-quality effects depend on the game’s implementation, graphics API, device, and chosen options. For MSAA specifically, Microsoft explains that sample count affects the samples allocated per render-target pixel. Direct3D support and quality levels can also vary with the adapter, texture format, and requested sample count, as described in Microsoft’s CheckMultisampleQualityLevels documentation. Those implementation-specific details do not establish how the settings compare across all games.
