Which One UI settings to change after a Samsung Galaxy update

Find out which Samsung Galaxy settings to check after a One UI update, including One UI 7 notification panels, app permissions, battery usage, and a safe troubleshooting order.

After a Samsung Galaxy update, do not reset every setting on the phone. First identify the installed One UI and Android versions, read Samsung’s update notes, and then check only the areas connected to a real change: notification panels, app notifications and permissions, battery use, and app or system updates. Menu names and available controls differ by Galaxy model, country, carrier, software version, and network.

One UI 7 is the most visible recent example: notifications and Quick settings can use separate swipe zones instead of one combined panel. The steps below help you confirm what changed, restore a layout you prefer, and troubleshoot battery or app problems without taking unnecessarily destructive actions.

1. Confirm exactly what installed before changing anything

A major version label such as One UI 7 is not enough to identify every change. Samsung distributes updates at different times, and a carrier or regional build can expose different features from another Galaxy with the same broad One UI name. Record the phone model and the complete software version first.

Find the update record

  1. Open Settings > Software update.
  2. Look for Last update, System Update history, or a similarly named history option. The label depends on the software build.
  3. Read the update description before changing preferences. Samsung may also show a What’s new page during the setup wizard after installation.

If the update screen does not show a useful summary, open the phone’s User Manual or Tips and Help area and search for “What’s new in One UI 7” (or the version named in your update notice). This is more reliable than assuming that a setting changed merely because the phone was updated.

Verify the precise software version

  1. Open Settings > About phone > Software information.
  2. Note the One UI version, Android version, and Build number. Keep the model number nearby as well.

Samsung’s support guidance states that “Available features and functions may vary by device, carrier, and network.” Treat every path in this article as a version-aware starting point, not a promise that your Galaxy has the same menu.

2. Relearn notifications and Quick settings in One UI 7

The most immediately noticeable One UI 7 change is that notifications and Quick settings can open from different parts of the top edge. This can make a familiar single swipe appear to have stopped working.

Open each panel

  • Notifications: swipe down from the top-left or top-center area.
  • Quick settings: swipe down from the top-right area.

Use the notification panel for alerts, conversations, and media controls. Use Quick settings for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, screen brightness, device controls, and other switches. A swipe from the wrong side may open a different panel, so test both zones before changing any settings.

Combine the panels again

If you prefer the older all-in-one gesture and your One UI 7 build offers the option, use this path:

  1. Swipe down from the top right to open Quick settings.
  2. Tap Edit (the pencil icon).
  3. Tap Panel settings.
  4. Choose Notification and quick settings view.
  5. Select Together.
  6. Tap Back, then Done.

Some devices show only the separate layout or use different wording. If Panel settings or Together is absent, your model, carrier build, region, or software revision may not support that choice. Do not treat a missing option as a failed update.

3. Check individual app notifications before changing global behavior

When messages, reminders, or alerts seem to have disappeared, inspect the affected app rather than disabling notification controls across the phone. Android and One UI allow apps to divide alerts into categories, and those categories are defined by each app.

Review an app’s notification controls

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Select the app that is missing or displaying unexpected alerts.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Check that notifications are allowed and inspect the individual categories shown for that app.

One app may expose separate switches for chats, promotions, reminders, calls, or background activity, while another exposes only a general notification switch. A category can be disabled even when the main app notification permission is enabled. Re-enable only the category connected to the problem so you do not create unwanted interruptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check permissions when an app function changed

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu.
  3. Choose Permission manager.
  4. Select a permission, such as camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos, or notifications.
  5. Review which apps have access and select the affected app to change its setting.

Permission names and available choices vary by Android and One UI version. Denying access can protect privacy, but it can also disable a feature the app needs: a navigation app may not work correctly without location, and a video-calling app may lose audio or camera access without the corresponding permissions. Change a permission only when you can connect it to the symptom, then test the app immediately.

4. Investigate battery drain instead of applying a blanket power restriction

A phone can use more power temporarily while it indexes files, optimizes apps, or completes background work after an update. If the drain persists, identify the apps and services responsible before turning off features that other tasks depend on.

Find the high-use apps

  1. Open Settings > Battery. On some Galaxy models this is under Battery and device care > Battery.
  2. Open the battery-usage view and examine the apps consuming the largest share over the period in which you noticed the problem.
  3. Compare the list with your actual use. A navigation, video, camera, or gaming app can appear high because you actively used it; an unfamiliar app consuming power in the background deserves closer inspection.

Samsung recommends checking background apps and reviewing relevant location settings when battery life changes. Make targeted adjustments: restrict unnecessary background activity for an app that remains active when you are not using it, or review location access for an app that does not need continuous location. Avoid disabling location, synchronization, or system services indiscriminately; doing so can break navigation, tracking, security, or timely updates.

Interpret battery changes carefully

Battery behavior is affected by signal strength, display brightness, radio use, temperature, app workload, and the update process itself. There is no universal switch that guarantees longer runtime on every Galaxy. Keep the setting change only if the usage screen and your own testing show that it addresses the problem without disrupting a needed function.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Troubleshoot apps that freeze or crash in a graduated order

“Apps freezing or crashing” after a One UI update does not automatically mean the phone needs a reset. Start with reversible checks and move toward more disruptive steps only when the earlier ones fail.

Step 1: Install the app’s current version

  1. Open the Google Play Store and check for updates to the affected app.
  2. Open the Galaxy Store and check there as well, because some Samsung apps and components are distributed through it.

Samsung notes that an app written for an older Android version may not work correctly on a newer device. If no compatible update exists, check the app developer’s support information for a version or compatibility statement before deleting data.

Step 2: Recheck permissions and restart

Use the permission path in the previous section and restore only permissions required by the app’s stated function. Then restart the phone. A restart clears temporary processes and is a low-risk way to test whether the failure was transient.

Step 3: Run Device care optimization

  1. Open Settings > Device care.
  2. Tap Optimize now.

The available checks differ by model, but this can close problematic background activity and surface device-care warnings without deleting personal files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Isolate downloaded apps with Safe mode

Start the phone in Safe mode using the method shown in your model’s support instructions. Safe mode temporarily prevents downloaded apps from running. If the problem disappears there, a recently installed or updated app is a likely cause; remove or update candidates one at a time after returning to normal mode. If the problem continues in Safe mode, a downloaded app is less likely to be responsible.

Step 5: Clear data or reinstall only after protecting important information

Clearing an app’s data can sign you out and remove locally stored files, settings, or offline content. Reinstalling can have similar consequences. Use these steps only after confirming that the app’s important data is synchronized or backed up, and follow the app maker’s instructions for restoring it.

Step 6: Reserve a factory reset for a last resort

A factory reset erases the phone and returns it to its setup state. Back up important photos, messages, authentication data, and files first, verify that you know the relevant account passwords, and use Samsung’s reset instructions for your exact model. A reset is not a routine post-update setting change.

6. Check for a follow-up Galaxy software update

Samsung often releases additional updates after a major One UI upgrade to deliver security patches, fixes, or corrections for issues discovered during rollout. If a problem remains after the targeted checks above, return to Settings > Software update (or System updates on some builds) and select the available update option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install follow-up software over a stable connection with sufficient battery or a charger attached. Read its notes before installation, then recheck the specific symptom rather than changing unrelated preferences.

7. Choose settings changes by the outcome you need

The following comparison keeps the trade-offs explicit. It is a decision aid, not a list of settings every Galaxy owner must change.

Outcome Targeted choice Trade-off to check
Faster access to alerts and toggles Use One UI 7’s separate notification and Quick settings swipes, or select Together in Panel settings when available. Separate panels require remembering which side opens each view; a combined panel may be unavailable on some models.
Fewer unwanted alerts Open the affected app’s notification categories and disable only irrelevant categories. Turning off a category can hide reminders, messages, or other information you expected to receive.
More privacy Use Permission manager to allow an app only the access required for its function. Denying a required permission can make that feature fail or reduce its accuracy.
Lower background battery use Identify high-use apps first, then adjust background activity or location for the specific app. Restrictions can delay synchronization, notifications, navigation, or other background functions.
Stable app operation Update the app, verify permissions, restart, run Device care, and use Safe mode before clearing data or resetting. Later steps are more disruptive and can remove local data or require reconfiguration.

8. A practical post-update sequence

Use this order whenever a Galaxy behaves differently after an update:

  1. Record the model, One UI version, Android version, and build number.
  2. Read Last update, System Update history, or the device’s What’s new material.
  3. Test both swipe zones for notifications and Quick settings if the phone runs One UI 7.
  4. If a particular app changed, inspect that app’s notification categories and permissions.
  5. If battery life changed, inspect usage and make one targeted background or location adjustment at a time.
  6. For crashes, update from Play Store and Galaxy Store, check permissions, restart, run Device care, and test Safe mode.
  7. Check for a follow-up system update.
  8. Only then consider clearing app data, reinstalling, or a factory reset; back up before any step that can erase local information.

This approach preserves working settings, makes each change traceable, and accounts for the model and software differences Samsung documents instead of assuming every Galaxy received an identical update.
