For most OLED TVs, the best first steps are to leave the built-in screen saver and pixel or screen shift enabled, and turn on low or default logo dimming if you often watch channels with fixed graphics or play games with a persistent heads-up display. Use a comfortable picture mode and room-appropriate brightness rather than imposing a universal brightness cap. These protections target long periods of static content while making fewer visible changes to ordinary viewing.
Setting names, menu locations, defaults, and availability depend on the TV model, region, and firmware. The guidance below explains what each control does, which trade-offs to expect, and how to avoid unnecessary panel-cleaning cycles.

Start with the protections that change the picture least
Enable the TV’s built-in screen saver and pixel or screen shift, and leave automatic panel compensation available. If your viewing regularly includes a bright, fixed channel logo, captions in a fixed position, or a game HUD, enable logo detection or logo brightness adjustment at its low or default level first. Raise the level only if those graphics stay on screen for substantial periods and the local dimming does not bother you.

Pixel shift moves the image slightly over time; a screen saver reduces the time a still image remains displayed; logo dimming acts on detected static areas. Lowering overall brightness can also reduce stress from unusually static-heavy viewing, but it makes the entire image dimmer. No cited manufacturer or test establishes one brightness number that is right for every OLED TV, room, and type of content.

What burn-in is—and what it is not
OLED burn-in is uneven, longer-lasting panel wear that can leave a persistent mark where bright or otherwise demanding content has repeatedly appeared. Temporary image retention is different: a faint ghost image may remain briefly after content changes and then fade. LG’s US support guidance, updated June 26, 2026, makes this distinction and identifies channel logos, paused games, vivid mode, and very high brightness over extended periods as risk factors.
The practical concern is not that every static image immediately damages a screen. It is that a fixed graphic displayed repeatedly for long stretches can make one area of the panel age differently from the rest. A logo, scoreboard, news ticker, or game HUD is a more relevant example than a film whose scenes keep changing. Use the protections in proportion to how often your viewing actually involves static graphics.
Which setting should you use?
| Setting | What it addresses | Picture effect and trade-off | How to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen saver or idle protection | A still image or no-signal screen left up while the TV is idle | It replaces or interrupts the idle display; it may not trigger for every input, app, or live-TV situation. | Leave it enabled. Check your model’s guidance if it does not start in a particular app or input. |
| Pixel shift or screen shift | Static content that remains in the same pixel locations | The image moves slightly over time. The change is generally subtle, though edges can shift beyond the visible screen border. | Leave it enabled unless its movement interferes with a specific use. |
| Logo detection or logo brightness adjustment | Fixed logos and, on some models, other detected graphics such as captions | The affected area becomes dimmer; higher levels make the change more noticeable. | Try Off only if you do not want the effect; otherwise start at Low or the default and adjust to taste. |
| Overall OLED brightness | Panel output across the image, including during static-heavy use | Lower output dims the whole picture, not just the static element. | Use a normal picture mode and a level suited to your room; reduce unnecessary output if long sessions feature fixed graphics. |
| Pixel refresh or panel cleaning | Panel compensation managed by the TV | It is not an everyday viewing control. A manual cycle may take a long time and should not be interrupted when the manufacturer instructs otherwise. | Allow automatic compensation to run and follow the manual for any manual cycle. |
The comparisons are general; the exact controls and behavior are model-specific. Samsung’s support pages, for example, describe a default screen saver that starts after two minutes in specified still-image or no-input situations, but also list exceptions. LG likewise describes a screen saver that starts after about two minutes for paused video or no signal. Do not assume that every source device or app will behave identically.

How to configure the protections on your TV
There is no reliable cross-brand menu path to quote: the menu wording and location vary by model, software, and region. Use the following procedure to find the controls without relying on an outdated path from a different TV.
- Identify the exact model and software. Check the TV’s model information in its settings or on its product label, and note the software or firmware version if shown. A model family name alone may not identify the same menu or feature set.
- Open the model-specific support page or manual. Search within it for terms such as “screen saver,” “pixel shift,” “screen shift,” “logo detection,” “logo brightness,” “pixel refresh,” or “panel cleaning.” Use the TV maker’s instructions for your exact model and region.
- Enable idle protection and image shift. Turn on the built-in screen saver and pixel or screen shift if available. Leave them at their normal or default behavior unless a particular feature disrupts a use you need.
- Set logo protection to a restrained starting level. If your TV offers Off, Low, and High, try Low first. Watch a familiar channel or game and decide whether the dimmed region remains acceptable. Increase protection only if persistent graphics are common enough to justify a more visible change.
- Choose brightness for the room and content. Start with a normal picture mode and adjust until the image is comfortable in your viewing conditions. If you routinely watch static-heavy content for long sessions, avoid unnecessarily high output during those sessions rather than applying an arbitrary cap to all viewing.
- Leave automatic compensation available. Do not power-cycle the TV just to prevent its normal maintenance. If the manufacturer recommends a manual refresh for visible retention, follow the model’s instructions, including any warning about duration or interruption.
Logo dimming: when to use Low or High
Logo controls directly target the kind of fixed graphic that may remain in one area for long periods. Samsung India’s support page, updated July 29, 2026, describes Logo Detection levels Off, Low (the default), and High, with dimming confined to the affected area. Samsung Hong Kong describes Auto Logo Brightness as dimming logos and captions, with High dimming further. LG’s US support guidance calls its option Logo Luminance Adjustment and says High provides the most logo-brightness reduction.
Start with Low or the model’s default if you watch a channel with a persistent logo, or play games whose HUD stays in fixed locations. The image change should be most noticeable around the detected graphic, not across the entire screen. If you cannot comfortably watch the dimmed region, lower the setting or turn it off and rely on the other protections. If your use is dominated by bright, fixed graphics over many hours, a stronger level may be a reasonable trade, but it is not necessary for every viewer.

Detection and naming differ. The existence of a logo control does not establish that every TV detects every graphic, nor that captions and game elements are handled identically. Check your model documentation rather than assuming a feature’s scope from its name.
Screen saver and pixel shift: low-intervention protections
A screen saver is most useful when the TV is left showing a paused frame, a still screen, or no signal. LG says its saver activates after approximately two minutes for paused video or no signal. Samsung describes a two-minute default for still images or no input, but notes exceptions involving live TV, full-screen video, some external inputs, and apps. Those are examples of specific manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that every TV starts a saver after two minutes in every situation.
Pixel shift or screen shift moves the displayed image slightly over time so static elements do not always fall on exactly the same panel pixels. Samsung recommends Pixel Shift for static content and notes that edges may move beyond the screen border. Leave it on unless the movement causes a concrete problem, such as an edge detail you need to keep visible. It is not a substitute for the screen saver when you leave a bright still image paused for a long time.

Brightness: avoid both extremes and fixed-number advice
Brightness advice often becomes misleading when it turns into a universal slider value. TVs differ, picture modes differ, rooms differ, and the content itself matters. A setting that looks comfortable in a bright room may be excessive in a dark one; reducing output lowers the brightness of everything, including material that is changing constantly. The useful rule is to choose a normal picture mode and comfortable room-appropriate output, then avoid unnecessarily high brightness during unusually long sessions dominated by static graphics.
RTINGS’ comparison of 2020–2023 OLED TVs with a 2017 LG C7 used each TV at maximum SDR brightness. The publisher explicitly says the luminance output was not matched, so that comparison does not isolate panel durability at equal brightness. It cannot establish a brightness cap that preserves picture quality while guaranteeing protection across models. Treat “turn it down” as a targeted adjustment when your use makes it relevant, not a precise universal prescription.

Let the TV manage panel compensation
Pixel refresh, cleaning, or compensation routines are maintenance features, not a treatment to run repeatedly as a precaution. LG’s US support page describes an automatic short pixel-cleaning cycle after every four cumulative hours and a longer calibration after 2,000 cumulative hours. These timings describe LG guidance and should not be generalized to another brand or model.
Best Value
Samsung says manual Pixel Refresh may take more than an hour, warns that interrupting it cancels the process, and notes that the option is unavailable on some models. Follow your own model’s instructions if a manual cycle is recommended for observed retention. Do not routinely force long manual cycles simply because a static image appeared briefly; temporary retention can fade after content changes, and automatic compensation is designed to run as part of normal use.
What severe burn-in tests can—and cannot—tell you
Burn-in is possible, but an accelerated static-content test should not be read as a prediction of ordinary mixed household use. RTINGS’ August 14, 2026 analysis reports a 10,500-hour CNN-only checkpoint in a comparison of 2020–2023 OLEDs with the 2017 LG C7; it did not find a consistent reduction in permanent retention compared with the earlier CNN-only test. Because the TVs were run at maximum SDR brightness without matching luminance, that result is not a controlled comparison at equal output.
RTINGS also reports visible permanent retention mainly in static areas after 18,000 hours of its intentionally severe CNN test. It explicitly says the test is not equivalent to ten years of normal mixed viewing. The useful lesson is narrower: persistent, repeated static content can create uneven wear, and the built-in protections are sensible to leave enabled. The test does not show that typical mixed viewing will produce the same result or timeline.
If you notice a ghost image or a dimmed logo
- A faint image appears after changing content: it may be temporary retention rather than lasting burn-in. Switch to varied content and allow the TV’s normal compensation behavior; do not immediately launch repeated manual refresh cycles.
- A logo or caption area looks darker during a program: check whether logo detection or logo brightness adjustment is active. Lower the level or disable it if the local dimming is unacceptable, understanding that this removes that targeted protection.
- A screen saver does not appear: check the exact model’s documentation and the input or app in use. Manufacturer guidance lists exceptions, so the absence of a saver in one viewing path does not necessarily mean the control is broken.
- Edges seem shifted or slightly cropped: check whether pixel or screen shift is enabled. Samsung notes that edges can move beyond the screen border; consult the model manual before turning off a protection that otherwise does not interfere with your use.
- You are considering manual panel cleaning: use it only as your manufacturer recommends for the observed issue. Check duration and interruption warnings first, especially where the process can take more than an hour.
A practical setup by viewing habit
Mostly films, varied shows, and changing content
Keep screen saver, pixel shift, and automatic compensation enabled. Use a normal picture mode at a level suited to the room. If static logos are not a major part of your viewing, there is little reason to accept a conspicuously dimmed area; try the default logo setting only if you want that additional protection.
News channels, sports, or other persistent graphics
Leave the automatic protections enabled and start logo dimming at Low or default. If logos, scoreboards, or captions remain fixed for long viewing sessions and the local dimming is tolerable, consider a stronger setting. Lower overall output only if the session is also brighter than you need; changing the entire picture is a broader trade-off than targeted dimming.
Games with a persistent HUD or frequent pauses
Keep pixel shift enabled and use logo or static-graphic dimming if your model detects the relevant elements. Avoid leaving a bright game paused for long periods; resume play or use the console’s or TV’s appropriate idle behavior rather than assuming every app or input will trigger the TV’s saver. Feature coverage varies, so the model manual is the authority on what the TV detects.
