How to Use the iPhone Clock App’s Bedtime and Sleep Schedule Features

Set up recurring bedtimes in Health, adjust only the next wake-up in Clock, and understand how Sleep Schedule alarms differ from regular alarms.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To create a recurring bedtime and wake-up plan on iPhone, set up a Sleep Schedule in the Health app: open Health > Browse > Sleep > Sleep, then tap Get Started and Continue. Clock is useful for changing the next scheduled wake-up alarm, but the recurring schedule itself is managed in Health. A bedtime and wake-up time entered during Sleep Focus setup is one-time, not a repeating schedule.

The key is to choose the control that matches what you want to change: Health for the recurring plan and its options, Clock for a one-off adjustment to the next wake-up, and Settings for customizing Sleep Focus. The steps below explain how to set up separate weekday and weekend schedules, preserve your regular routine after a late morning, and tell a sleep-schedule alarm apart from a standard Clock alarm.

Where bedtime and Sleep Schedule settings live

The names can be confusing because Clock displays and can adjust the next wake-up alarm, while Health manages recurring sleep schedules. Use Health to choose which days a schedule runs, set its bedtime and wake-up time, configure its alarm, and change related options. Use Clock when you want to adjust the upcoming wake-up without necessarily changing the recurring plan.

Sleep Focus is related but distinct: it can reduce distractions around bedtime, but an ordinary Clock alarm does not turn Sleep Focus on. Apple’s iPhone User Guide pages labeled iOS 26 and iOS 27 describe these features; navigation labels can vary by iOS release or region. If Browse is not visible in Health, Apple’s currently indexed guide also shows Search as a route to Sleep.

Think of these as three related but separate choices. A Sleep Schedule defines recurring days and times. Its schedule alarm is the wake-up alarm associated with that plan. Sleep Focus controls distractions and can begin before bedtime when Wind Down is configured. A regular alarm created in Clock is independent: it may repeat on selected days or be a one-time alarm, but it does not activate Sleep Focus.

You do not need a separate alarm clock or accessory to configure these built-in features. The settings described here are in Health, Clock, and Settings on iPhone. The menu labels in Apple’s iPhone User Guide may differ slightly by release or region, so look for the corresponding Sleep or schedule controls if a label is not in the same place.

How to set a recurring bedtime on iPhone

To make bedtime and wake-up repeat on chosen days, create a schedule in Health rather than relying on the bedtime prompt in Sleep Focus setup. This is the setup path for a repeating weekly plan. You can choose which days are active, enter the two times, and decide whether that schedule should sound an alarm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Health. Tap Browse, then Sleep, then Sleep again. If Browse is unavailable, look for Sleep using Health’s Search.
  2. Start setup. Tap Get Started, then Continue.
  3. Choose whether to set a Sleep Goal. Set one if you want, or proceed without one if you do not want to configure that option. The goal is an additional setting; your recurring plan is configured through the schedule controls.
  4. Edit the schedule. Under Schedule, tap Edit. Select the days when the schedule should be active, then set bedtime and wake-up time. Check the selected days carefully: they determine when this schedule applies.
  5. Set the schedule alarm. Turn the alarm on or off and choose from the available sound, volume, vibration, and snooze options. These are options for the schedule alarm; song selection is not available for it.
  6. Save setup. Tap Done, then Next, and tap Done to finish.

In the schedule editor, dragging the bedtime control changes bedtime; dragging the alarm control changes wake-up. Dragging the arc between them moves bedtime and wake-up together, preserving the scheduled sleep duration. Confirm that the selected days match the pattern you want before saving.

Those controls address two different kinds of adjustment. If you only want to get up later, move the wake-up control rather than the arc. If you want to shift the whole sleep window while keeping its duration, move the arc so both endpoints move together. In either case, make sure you are editing the right schedule and that its active days are the intended ones before you finish.

The schedule alarm can be switched off even when you keep the schedule itself. That distinction is useful if you want to retain the bedtime and wake-up plan but do not want its alarm to sound. Conversely, setting up a schedule does not require you to use a particular sound option: select from the available sound, volume, vibration, and snooze controls during setup.

Why Sleep Focus setup may not create a repeating bedtime

Setting bedtime and wake-up while configuring Sleep Focus creates a one-time schedule. It does not substitute for the recurring schedule flow above. If the times should repeat every week, create or edit a schedule in Health and select its active days.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is an easy distinction to miss because both flows involve bedtime and wake-up times. The practical test is whether you need a weekly routine. If yes, use the recurring schedule setup in Health; if you are only setting a time for one occurrence while setting up Sleep Focus, do not assume it has established a repeating schedule.

How to set different schedules for weekdays and weekends

You can create separate schedules for different day patterns—for example, one for weekdays and another for weekends. Each schedule applies only to the days selected for it. This lets one set of times apply to working days and another set to the weekend without changing both groups whenever you edit one schedule.

  1. In Health, go to Browse > Sleep > Sleep.
  2. Scroll to Your Schedule, then tap Full Schedule & Options.
  3. Tap Add Schedule for a new day pattern, or tap Edit beside an existing schedule.
  4. Choose its active days, bedtime, wake-up time, and alarm options, then save.

A saved change to a schedule applies to every day selected in that schedule. If you edit a schedule used for both weekdays and weekends, the changed times therefore apply to all of its selected days. Use separate schedules when the two groups need different times.

For example, you might select weekdays for one schedule and the weekend days for another, then set the times and alarm options independently. The essential part is assigning the intended days to each schedule. A schedule is not limited to weekdays or weekends as a preset; the selected days are what determine when it applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before saving an edit, review the active-day selection as well as the times. If the schedule is shared by several days, its saved changes apply across all those days. If only one group should change, use a separate schedule for that group rather than editing a schedule that also covers days that should keep the original times.

How to change just the next wake-up alarm

For a one-off adjustment—such as getting up later tomorrow—use Clock’s next-alarm controls and choose the option that limits the change to the next occurrence. This is different from editing the recurring schedule in Health: it changes the upcoming wake-up and then lets the usual plan resume.

  1. Open Clock, tap Alarms, then tap Change for the wake-up alarm.
  2. Drag the wake-up alarm control to change only the wake-up time. To move bedtime and wake-up together while preserving the scheduled sleep duration, drag the arc between them instead.
  3. Adjust sound and haptics, volume, snooze, or snooze duration if needed, then tap Done.
  4. Choose Change Next Alarm Only to make the change temporary.

After that next wake-up, the normal schedule resumes. If you choose Change This Schedule, the recurring wake-up alarm changes instead. For broader changes to schedule days, bedtime, or other schedule details, edit the schedule in Health.

The two Clock choices are about scope. Choose Change Next Alarm Only when the exception should apply just to the next wake-up. Choose Change This Schedule when you intend to update the recurring wake-up time. If your actual goal is to change which days the plan covers or adjust the broader schedule, use Health’s schedule editor rather than treating a one-off Clock change as a full schedule edit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clock also lets you adjust sound and haptics, volume, snooze, and snooze duration in this flow. Those settings are presented alongside the time adjustment, so review them if the upcoming alarm should behave differently as well as ring at a different time. Tap Done and then select the intended scope instead of assuming that every Clock change is temporary.

What changes when you adjust bedtime, wake-up, or the schedule?

Action Effect Where to do it
Change only the next wake-up Adjusts the upcoming alarm; the usual schedule resumes after that wake-up. Clock > Alarms > Change; choose Change Next Alarm Only.
Change the recurring wake-up Updates the wake-up alarm for the recurring schedule. Clock > Alarms > Change; choose Change This Schedule, or edit the schedule in Health.
Move wake-up without moving bedtime Changes the wake-up time only. Drag the wake-up alarm control.
Move bedtime and wake-up together Moves both times while preserving the scheduled sleep duration. Drag the arc between bedtime and wake-up.
Change selected schedule days or broader settings Edits the recurring plan; saved changes apply to all days selected for that schedule. Health > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options.

The most important decision is whether you are making an exception or changing the routine. A one-time later wake-up belongs in Clock’s Change Next Alarm Only flow. A new regular wake-up belongs in the recurring schedule. The arc is a separate choice from either scope: it moves bedtime and wake-up together, preserving the scheduled duration, while dragging the wake-up control changes only wake-up time.

There is also a difference between changing a schedule’s alarm and changing the schedule. Turning off an alarm leaves the schedule in place. Switching off Sleep Schedule in Full Schedule & Options turns off all schedules and their alarms. Deleting a schedule removes that selected schedule. Choose among these according to whether you want the plan retained, disabled, or removed.

How Wind Down and Sleep Focus work with a schedule

Wind Down is the period before bedtime when Sleep Focus begins. In Health, open Sleep > Full Schedule & Options, then adjust Wind Down under Additional Details. Apple’s guide gives a range of 15 minutes to 3 hours before bedtime. Sleep Focus can reduce distractions such as notifications and calls during that period and at bedtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That timing means Sleep Focus can begin before the bedtime on your schedule: it starts when the configured Wind Down period starts. For example, a chosen wind-down interval is counted back from bedtime, and Focus begins at the start of that interval. If you do not want Sleep Focus to begin at that point, review the Wind Down setting and the Sleep Focus configuration rather than expecting an ordinary alarm to control it.

To customize what Sleep Focus allows, open Settings > Focus > Sleep. These Focus settings are separate from ordinary Clock alarms: a regular alarm does not turn Sleep Focus on. In Health’s Full Schedule & Options, you can also adjust Sleep Goal under Additional Details. Wind Down and Sleep Goal are related schedule options, not replacements for choosing active days and setting bedtime and wake-up.

Wind Down can be set from 15 minutes to 3 hours before bedtime. That range gives you flexibility about when the Focus period begins; it does not change the distinction between a recurring schedule and a regular Clock alarm. A Clock alarm can ring without activating Sleep Focus, while Sleep Focus is configured through its own controls.

Sleep Schedule alarms and regular Clock alarms compared

Feature Sleep Schedule alarm Regular Clock alarm
How it is managed Part of a sleep schedule in Health; Clock can adjust the next scheduled wake-up. Created and managed in Clock.
Repeating days Uses the selected days in its schedule; separate schedules can cover different day patterns. Can be one-time or repeat on selected days.
Turns on Sleep Focus? Sleep Focus starts with the configured Wind Down period, if used. No. A regular Clock alarm does not turn on Sleep Focus.
Alarm sound options Offers sound, volume, vibration, and snooze options; a song cannot be selected. Can use a song.

Use a Sleep Schedule alarm when the alarm belongs to a recurring sleep plan. Use a regular Clock alarm for a separate one-time or repeating alarm that is not tied to Sleep Focus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sound difference matters if you want a particular song: the sleep-schedule alarm offers sound options but does not let you select a song, while a regular Clock alarm can use one. The Focus difference matters if you expect the alarm to quiet notifications or calls: the regular alarm does not turn Sleep Focus on. To get that Focus behavior, configure Sleep Focus and Wind Down separately.

A regular Clock alarm remains useful for an independent reminder or wake-up. It can be set once or repeated on chosen days, but it should not be confused with the alarm attached to a Health sleep schedule. Likewise, changing the next scheduled wake-up in Clock does not make the ordinary alarm the owner of the recurring sleep plan.

How to stop a sleep alarm from repeating, turn it off, or delete a schedule

The right control depends on whether you want to silence one upcoming alarm, keep a schedule without its alarm, disable all schedules, or remove one schedule. These actions have different scopes, so choose based on what should happen after the next wake-up.

  • Turn off only the next scheduled alarm: In Health, edit the Next schedule and turn Alarm off. The normal alarm resumes after that wake-up.
  • Keep a recurring schedule but disable its alarm: Edit that schedule in Health and turn Alarm off.
  • Turn off all sleep schedules and their alarms: In Full Schedule & Options, switch off Sleep Schedule.
  • Delete one schedule: Edit that schedule and choose Delete Schedule.

Turning off a schedule alarm is different from turning off Sleep Schedule: the first retains the schedule, while switching off Sleep Schedule turns off all schedules and their alarms. Deleting removes the selected schedule.

If the goal is only to prevent the next scheduled alarm from sounding, edit the Next schedule and turn its Alarm off; this is not the same as deleting the recurring plan. If you still want the schedule but never want its alarm, turn off Alarm while editing that schedule. If you want to stop every sleep schedule and its alarms, switch off Sleep Schedule under Full Schedule & Options. If one pattern is no longer needed, use Delete Schedule for that schedule rather than disabling all schedules.

These distinctions also answer the question of how to stop the sleep alarm from repeating. Disable the alarm if you want to keep the schedule without an alarm; disable Sleep Schedule if you want all schedules and alarms off; delete a schedule only when you want that specific schedule removed. Turning off only the next alarm is temporary, and the normal alarm resumes after that wake-up.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using Sleep Focus setup for a weekly plan: Its bedtime and wake-up entry is one-time. Make a recurring schedule in Health and select active days.
  • Choosing the wrong Clock change option: Use Change Next Alarm Only for a one-off adjustment. Change This Schedule updates the recurring wake-up.
  • Editing a schedule shared by different day patterns: A saved change applies to every day selected in that schedule. Separate weekday and weekend schedules if their times differ.
  • Expecting a song on a schedule alarm: Sleep Schedule alarms do not offer song selection. A regular Clock alarm can use a song, but it does not activate Sleep Focus.
  • Expecting an ordinary alarm to start Sleep Focus: Configure Sleep Focus and Wind Down separately if you want Focus to start before bedtime.

Another common source of confusion is changing bedtime and wake-up together when you intended to move only wake-up, or changing wake-up alone when you meant to keep the same scheduled duration. In the editor, the wake-up control changes wake-up time only; the arc moves both bedtime and wake-up while preserving duration.

Also distinguish turning off an alarm from turning off a schedule. An alarm can be disabled while its schedule remains saved. The Sleep Schedule switch turns off all schedules and alarms, while Delete Schedule removes one schedule. If the wrong days are selected, an otherwise correct edit can affect more days than intended because changes apply to all days in that schedule.
