Keep the inference server off the public internet whenever possible. Bind it to loopback or a private interface, then give remote users access through a VPN, zero-trust access layer, or authenticated reverse proxy. Require authentication at the UI or API gateway, use HTTPS across network boundaries, and expose only the ports and features the deployment needs.
Start by limiting network reachability
First identify which interfaces and ports are reachable from outside the host. Close anything that is not required, including model backends, administrative interfaces, and internal service ports. CISA’s exposure-reduction guidance recommends minimizing internet exposure, segmenting networks, patching systems, changing default passwords, monitoring traffic, and using MFA where possible: CISA network infrastructure guidance.

Where possible, bind the inference service to loopback for local-only use, or to a private interface or subnet for a contained deployment. For containers, keep the model backend on a private container network and allow connections only from the UI or gateway that needs it. In cloud deployments, use private subnets and security-group rules for the same purpose. The exact binding address and port depend on the software and deployment; there is no universal secure port or setting.

Open WebUI’s hardening guide describes its application as intended for private, trusted networks and advises putting a VPN, zero-trust access proxy, or authenticated reverse proxy with IP allowlisting in front of it. It states: “Do not expose it directly to the public internet without an additional access control layer in front of it.” That warning is specific to Open WebUI, but the underlying principle applies broadly: avoid direct public exposure of an inference API. See Open WebUI’s hardening guide.

Choose a controlled path for remote access
The right pattern depends on who needs access and what infrastructure you have. These options are alternatives, not a reason to publish the backend directly:
| Access pattern | Best suited to | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Loopback-only binding | One machine or local-only use | Restricts network reachability; remote users need another controlled route. |
| Private network or VPN | Known users or devices connecting remotely | Secure VPN credentials, membership, and the network boundary. |
| Zero-trust access proxy | Remote access governed by identity-aware policies | Configure and maintain both the proxy and identity policies. |
| Authenticated reverse proxy or API gateway | A web UI or API that must be published through a controlled edge | Can centralize authentication, TLS, allowlisting, and rate controls; ensure the backend is not separately exposed. |
Open WebUI’s hardening guidance recommends these kinds of access layers. A host firewall, cloud security group, or existing router may be enough to filter traffic; new hardware is not automatically necessary. Whatever the edge, configure it so only the intended route reaches the backend.
Require identity checks for the UI and API
Network location is not authentication. Require users to sign in before reaching the interface, and protect inference APIs as well as the browser UI. An application login does not protect a separate API endpoint if that endpoint remains publicly reachable without its own authentication or a gateway in front of it.

- Space Saving: Maximum depth: 14.8". Use the wall mount network cabinet to maximize available space for retail locations, classrooms, back offices, network cabinets, and other locations where space is limited.
- Fast Heat Dissipation: The server cabinet is designed with vents to optimize airflow and avoid critical IT equipment overheating. Heat sink holes in the top, bottom, and rear panels are more conducive to heat dissipation.
- Sturdy Construction: Robust welded frame construction for durability and long service life. With 100 lbs wall-mounted load capacity and 200 lbs ground-mounted load capacity, you can place multiple devices in the server rack cabinet as needed.
- High Security: The locked glass door ensures the security of data and equipment. Wall mount rack enclosure server cabinet is ideal for use in public places such as offices, effectively protecting the security of your devices.
- Hassle-free Installation: Fully adjustable square-hole mounting rails of the wall mount server cabinet facilitate device installation. Wiring holes on the top, bottom, and rear panels provide you with easy cable routing.
For teams, use organization-managed identity such as OIDC/OAuth or LDAP when the chosen product supports it. Assign roles according to need, disable open signup or require approval, and periodically review accounts and memberships. Prefer MFA through the identity provider where available. Open WebUI documents that delegated SSO relies on the identity provider for MFA; its local password login does not include built-in MFA. Check the current product documentation for the version you run: Open WebUI security documentation.
For API keys and service credentials, grant only the permissions each user or service needs, store secrets outside source code and logs, and rotate credentials if exposure is suspected. NIST SP 800-228 treats API security as a lifecycle concern, with risk-based controls before and during runtime: NIST SP 800-228. The Cloud Security Alliance also recommends enforcing authentication at the API gateway for AI inference endpoints when a framework lacks native authentication: Cloud Security Alliance guidance on AI inference endpoints.
Protect traffic and configure the proxy deliberately
Use HTTPS for browser and API traffic crossing a network boundary. If TLS terminates at a reverse proxy, configure the application to trust forwarded headers only from that proxy; otherwise, clients may be able to spoof information the application treats as trusted. Do not expose an unencrypted backend route alongside the protected proxy route.

- Adjustable Depth: 23-40'' adjustable depth is used for servers and network equipment, ensuring enough space for AV equipment, components, and cabling, while allowing you to access ports and equipment from multiple sides.
- Strong Load Capacity: Ground-Mounted Load Capacity: 500 lbs, Wall-Mounted Load Capacity: 150 lbs. The av rack is made of carbon steel for better weldability performance and can help save space while meeting your need to place multiple devices.
- User-friendly Design: Ergonomic design makes the open frame av rack easier to use. The additional top panel is able to place other items with more available space. Roller design moves anywhere and anytime, is convenient, and is more energy-saving.
- Complete Accessories: We provide the accessories you need, including 2 x Pallets, 145 x M5*10 Cross Head Screws, 4 x Casters, 4 x M10*50 Expansion Screws,10 x M6*12 Cage Nuts, 1 x Grounding Wire, 1 x User Manual.
- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
Configure browser-facing controls for the application you use. Open WebUI recommends secure cookies, security headers, and restricting CORS to required domains rather than leaving it permissive. Add rate limits and connection throttling at the gateway or proxy to help control brute-force attempts and abusive request volume. These controls complement authentication and patching; they do not replace either.

A valid account should not automatically mean unrestricted access to the host, data, or model environment. Grant administrative privileges sparingly, and disable features that the deployment does not need. Depending on the application, review whether users can enable or create:
- Code execution, server-side tools, or plugins.
- File uploads, retrieval systems, or access to sensitive data.
- Automatic package installation or other changes to the server environment.
- Outbound network requests from tools, extensions, or model-related components.
Open WebUI notes that its server-side Tools and Functions run with the privileges of its process. Its documentation also covers disabling unused execution features and limiting upload size and count. Those settings are product-specific, so verify the labels and defaults in the current version before changing them: Open WebUI hardening documentation.

Review egress as well as inbound access. If extensions, loaders, or tools can contact internal services or external hosts, apply suitable outbound restrictions and validate URLs. This reduces the chance that a feature can reach services or data outside its intended scope. NIST’s API guidance discusses controls across API lifecycles, while CISA recommends monitoring ingress and egress: NIST SP 800-228 and CISA guidance.
Maintain and verify the deployment
Security settings are only useful if they match the actual deployment and remain in place. Product names, defaults, and configuration options vary by server, UI, version, and hosting environment. Use the chosen product’s current documentation rather than copying an environment variable or firewall rule from another application.
