Thin phones can have shorter battery life because a slimmer enclosure may leave less room for a battery, limiting how much energy it can store. But thickness alone does not determine how long a phone lasts: battery chemistry, component efficiency, software, workload, temperature, and battery age all matter.
Why can a thinner phone run out sooner?
A phone has a finite amount of internal space. The battery must share it with the display, circuit boards, cameras, structural parts, and thermal systems. If a phone becomes thinner while its layout and battery technology stay broadly similar, the battery may have less volume and store less energy. With less energy available between charges, runtime can fall.

That is a design tendency, not a rule that applies to every thin phone. Manufacturers can change the battery’s shape, rearrange components, use cells with higher energy density, or reduce how much power the device uses. Samsung describes the challenge of fitting a battery alongside a thin design, display, and processor in its Galaxy Note10 design discussion.
Runtime depends on both stored energy and energy use
A useful way to think about runtime is the energy stored in the battery divided by the rate at which the phone uses it. A large-capacity battery can still drain quickly during demanding use. Bright displays, frequent screen refreshes, intensive apps, camera use, mobile connectivity, and background activity can all increase power consumption. Their impact varies by phone and by how it is used.

Apple explains that iPhone power management adjusts device loads in response to battery capability, and that chemical aging reduces battery capacity and can affect peak power. Its battery and performance documentation also notes that rechargeable iPhone batteries diminish in capacity and peak performance over time.
Capacity is useful, but it does not predict hours by itself
Milliamp-hours (mAh) measure electric charge, not energy on their own; voltage also matters when comparing energy. A capacity rating is one useful specification, but it cannot tell you exactly how long a phone will last. For a fair comparison, prioritize endurance tests that use similar procedures, settings, and network conditions.
What can manufacturers do to make thin phones last longer?
Recover space through internal redesign
Manufacturers can rethink component placement and redesign parts such as the frame, hinge, display, and circuit boards to make more room for a battery without increasing the phone’s exterior thickness. Samsung says display-structure changes in its Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra created additional internal space for a battery-system redesign. That is a model-specific foldable example, not a guarantee that every thin phone can gain the same amount of space. Samsung’s engineering interview says that meeting the device’s expectations required “reengineering the battery system, not simply increasing battery capacity.”

Increase the energy stored in a given volume
Higher energy density can allow a battery to store more energy in the same space. Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra uses a silicon-carbon anode to improve energy density, alongside system-level work to maintain stability because the material is more reactive under high-voltage conditions. This is Samsung’s account of one product design, not independent evidence that the approach will deliver the same result in every phone.

New battery technologies should not be treated as imminent fixes for smartphone endurance without evidence of phone deployment. In 2024, Samsung Electro-Mechanics reported an energy density of 200 Wh/L for an oxide-based small all-solid-state battery aimed at wearable devices. The company said it was presenting the battery to customers for prototype evaluation; that announcement does not establish smartphone availability or a future improvement in phone runtime. Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ announcement describes the product and its status.
Use less energy for the same tasks
More efficient processors, displays, radios, and power circuits can reduce the energy a phone needs to do a given task. Software can also limit unnecessary background activity or adapt performance and display behavior. The benefit to battery life depends on what the phone does with those savings: a manufacturer may use efficiency gains to support a larger display or more demanding features rather than extend time between charges.
Manage charging heat without confusing it with runtime
Charging design affects heat and how quickly a battery can be replenished, but it does not automatically increase the hours of use from one charge. Samsung says the Fold8 Ultra uses a dual-path charging architecture intended to distribute power efficiently and manage heat while supporting 45 W charging. Its engineering interview reports a charge estimate of up to 67% in 30 minutes; that is a manufacturer estimate, not a result guaranteed under all conditions.

Specifications and playback estimates are useful for understanding a particular model, but they are not interchangeable with independently measured everyday endurance. Samsung’s figures below are model-specific manufacturer claims; playback estimates should not be read as a promise of the same result for every user.

Samsung lists the S26-series capacities and playback estimates on its Galaxy S26 product page. Its Fold8 Ultra engineering interview gives the Fold8 Ultra figures. The estimates use manufacturer-defined conditions, so they are not direct evidence of how the models compare in a mixed-use day.
The S26 product page also claims 29% enhanced heat dissipation for the vapor chamber. That is a manufacturer claim about heat dissipation, not a battery-runtime figure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare phones if battery life matters?
- Look for matched endurance tests. Prefer independent comparisons using the same test procedure, settings, and network conditions. Treat manufacturer playback estimates as context, not substitutes for matched tests.
- Consider capacity alongside the whole device. Compare rated capacity with thickness, weight, screen size, and the way you expect to use the phone. A capacity number alone cannot predict runtime.
- Match the workload to your own use. A phone’s display, processor, connectivity, and typical tasks can matter more to your experience than its thickness.
- Separate charging from endurance. Charging speed and heat management tell you about replenishing power, not necessarily how many hours the phone lasts per charge.
- Consider aging and replacement. For long-term ownership, check the manufacturer’s information about battery aging, service, and replacement. Apple’s battery documentation explains how chemical aging affects capacity and peak performance.
Can an external battery help?
A compatible USB-C power bank or other portable battery can provide extra charge away from an outlet, but it does not fix limited battery volume inside the phone or make the phone more energy-efficient. Check the connector and charging standard for your phone; for magnetic battery products, confirm that the phone supports the required magnetic charging system. Apple’s iPhone battery accessories listing includes USB-C and magnetic portable battery products, but compatibility depends on the specific phone and accessory.
