Plant native milkweed for monarch caterpillars and a succession of native nectar flowers for adult butterflies. The right species depend on your region, soil, moisture, sun, and local monarch season, so start with a regional plant guide rather than a one-size-fits-all seed mix.

Choose plants for both stages of a monarch’s life

Monarch caterpillars eat milkweed; adult monarchs feed on nectar from milkweed and many other flowers. A useful planting therefore pairs locally native milkweed host plants with nectar flowers that bloom across the local monarch season. Monarch Joint Venture puts it simply: “The best habitat for monarchs contains a variety of native milkweed as well as nectar plants.” Read its habitat guidance.

Find native choices for your region

Use the Xerces Society’s Plants for Monarchs location tool to narrow choices by location and site or aesthetic attributes; it also links plants to potential suppliers. Its regional nectar plant guides draw on nearly 24,000 nectaring observations across 358 native plant species, organized into 15 regions. Those observations inform regional recommendations; they are not a current monarch population survey or proof that every listed species suits every garden.

Examples from the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast

Regional Xerces guides include butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), common milkweed (A. syriaca) and swamp milkweed (A. incarnata) as host and nectar plants. Nectar options include wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), narrow-leaved mountain mint (Pycnanthemum tenuifolium), New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae), goldenrods (Solidago spp.) and Joe-Pye weeds (Eutrochium spp.). Check the guide for your county and garden conditions: these plants differ in height, water needs, bloom time and distribution.

Examples from Florida

The Florida guide lists aquatic milkweed (Asclepias perennis), butterfly milkweed and swamp milkweed, alongside nectar plants such as blue mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum), spiked blazing star (Liatris spicata), narrow-leaved sunflower (Helianthus angustifolius) and seaside goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens). Florida’s monarch season is longer than those of northern regions, so this list should not be treated as a planting prescription for other states.

Match plants to your site and bloom season

  1. Check what is native where you live. Confirm the species’ range and, when possible, choose seed or plants sourced from your region. A plant native somewhere in the United States is not automatically native to your county or appropriate for your habitat.
  2. Match conditions. Compare the guide’s sun, soil-moisture, water and mature-size information with your planting site. Xerces’ regional guides recommend sunny sites and clumps of a single flower species.
  3. Plan for bloom coverage. Combine species with overlapping or sequential bloom times that cover the local monarch season, rather than relying on one brief flush of flowers.
  4. Check availability and treatment. Ask suppliers where their seed or plants originated and whether plants received systemic insecticide treatments. Avoid applying pesticides in or near monarch habitat.

If you cannot find locally native milkweed

Xerces’ milkweed FAQs say fewer than 20 of the more than 70 milkweed species native to the United States are typically commercially available, with supply scarce in several regions. If locally appropriate milkweed is unavailable, Xerces recommends planting native nectar wildflowers to feed adult monarchs rather than substituting non-native milkweed as though it were local.

In particular, do not treat tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) as a universal substitute. Xerces’ regional guides caution that it is non-native in the United States and can persist year-round in mild climates; the guides say it may foster higher loads of the monarch parasite Ophryocystis elektroscirrha. This is a regional-guide caution, not a claim that every tropical milkweed plant causes disease.

Why planting native habitat matters

The Xerces Society’s 2026 monarch page reports an over-80% decline in monarch butterfly populations in recent decades, without specifying a measurement year or metric in the cited summary. That figure is a reason to support habitat, not a forecast of what an individual garden will achieve. A garden’s practical contribution is to provide suitable host plants and nectar flowers selected for its local conditions.
