Compare the final payable amount—not just the gold rate or a “zero making charges” offer—and check that the quote uses the item’s purity and net gold weight.
How to calculate the total gold jewelry price
Use this reconciliation:
Total payable = metal value + making charge + other disclosed charges + GST − discounts or credits.

- Calculate metal value. Multiply the net gold weight in grams by the quoted rate per gram, provided the rate is for the item’s purity. If the seller quotes a 24-karat rate for lower-fineness jewelry, ask how it is converted to the item’s rate. Do not apply a purity adjustment to a rate that already applies to the item’s karat.
- Add the making charge. Use the rupee amount on the quote. If the seller gives a percentage or per-gram charge, ask what it is calculated against and convert it to rupees for the specific item.
- Add other charges only once. Ask what any wastage, stone or other charge covers, and whether it is already included in the gold value or another line item.
- Apply GST and subtract recorded discounts or credits. Reconcile the calculation with the seller’s tax invoice and the amount due.
Record the quote date, rate unit and purity basis. Gold rates and retailer charge structures are inputs to verify in the dated quote; there is no single live rate or standard making-charge percentage established here.

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) states that GST on jewelry sold to an end consumer is 3% of the total transaction value, whether making charges are shown separately or not. Its rate table also lists precious-metal jewelry under HSN 7113 at 3%. Check the current rules and the seller’s tax invoice when buying; do not assume that separately displaying making charges changes the total-transaction-value treatment. CBIC sectoral FAQ

What are making charges, and how should you compare them?
Making charges are the retailer’s workmanship charge for the piece. A seller may quote them as a flat rupee amount, a per-gram amount or a percentage; ask for the basis and the resulting rupee amount for your item. Official sources cited here do not establish one standard making-charge percentage.
Compare offers only after putting them on the same basis. A lower headline rate or a “zero making charges” promotion is not enough if the gold rate, weight, other charges, discount or tax treatment differs. Design and stones can also make two pieces non-equivalent.

How to check the hallmark and invoice
For hallmarked gold jewelry, BIS describes three marks: the BIS logo, purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID. Use the BIS CARE app’s Verify HUID feature to check the HUID. Hallmarking charges are separate from making and wastage charges, so do not treat them as the workmanship charge. BIS Common Consumer FAQ

BIS says the bill or invoice for hallmarked precious-metal articles should state the article description, net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges. Keep an authentic invoice. If you have a purity concern, BIS says consumers can seek testing at a BIS-recognized Assaying & Hallmarking Centre. Its consumer-protection guidance says that if hallmarked jewelry is found to have less purity than marked, the buyer is entitled to compensation calculated as twice the amount of the difference for the sold item’s weight, plus testing charges. Confirm the current process with BIS before relying on a remedy.
