Google’s Phone app can automatically record calls from unknown numbers or selected contacts on supported Android phones and in supported regions. Apple’s iPhone instructions describe starting a recording during a call, rather than setting up automatic recording. Neither a phone’s brand nor its model alone guarantees the feature: country, carrier, operating-system version and app support can affect availability.
Which phones can record calls automatically?
For automatic call recording, Google documents a setting in its Phone app for calls from unknown numbers or selected contacts. Eligible hardware and software are only part of the test: Google says support also depends on the country or region and, in some cases, the carrier.

Apple documents built-in call recording on iPhone in some countries and regions, but its instructions have the user start recording after a call begins. They do not document an automatic-recording rule for unknown callers or selected contacts.
Google Phone app: automatic recording on supported Android phones
Google’s published requirements are:
- On a non-Pixel phone: Android 9 or later.
- On a Pixel: Pixel 6 or later with Android 14 or later.
- The latest version of the Phone app, plus availability in a supported country or region. Carrier support may also be required.
These are minimum requirements, not a promise that every phone meeting them can record calls. Check the Phone app and your local support before buying or relying on the feature. Google’s instructions are at Use the Phone app to record calls.

Set up automatic recording
Where the option is available, Google Phone can be configured to record calls from numbers not saved in your contacts or from selected contacts. The exact options shown depend on market support. Google also documents controls for playing recordings, sharing them to supported apps and choosing how long recordings are kept before automatic deletion. Automatic recording and deletion are not available in every market.
Expect an announcement
Google says participants are notified before recording begins. Recording is not a silent background feature, and the notice does not replace any consent required by local law.

iPhone: built-in recording is started during the call
Apple says recording is available for a call with one other person in some countries and regions. To use it, open the Phone app, make a call, tap More, then Call Recording. Both participants hear an audio notice. When recording stops or the call ends, the file is saved in the Call Recordings folder in Notes.
Apple lists the feature as unavailable in Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, the European Union, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Apple’s instructions do not establish a minimum iPhone model for recording audio itself. Transcripts, which are available only in select regions and languages, are a separate feature; Apple advises checking transcript accuracy before relying on it.

- Carrier and app version: Google requires the latest Phone app and warns that only certain devices and carriers support recording.
- Automatic or manual mode: Google documents automatic rules for unknown callers or selected contacts. Apple documents starting a recording during the call.
- Notice and consent: Both systems announce recording. Rules for consent depend on the law that applies to the call.
- Storage and transcript needs: iPhone recordings are saved in Notes; Google offers retention controls. Transcription is separately limited by language and region.
Recording calls and consent
Before recording, check the laws that apply to everyone on the call. Google Phone app Help warns: “Some laws require all people on the call to consent to being recorded.” The built-in audio notices described by Apple and Google are not a substitute for checking those legal requirements.
