The right recording microphone depends on what you record, how close you can work to it, and whether your room is quiet or reflective—not on a universal ranking. These five options cover home vocals, speech, acoustic instruments, guitar amps, and drums. The list is a practical comparison, not a claim that these are objectively the five best microphones for every budget or setup.
How to choose a recording microphone
Start with the source and room, then check how the microphone connects to your equipment. RØDE’s manufacturer guidance says dynamic microphones are less sensitive to room noise and reflections, while condensers capture detail and a broad frequency response for studio recording, vocals, and acoustic instruments. Those are general tendencies, not guarantees: placement, the particular microphone, and the room all matter. RØDE’s microphone selection guide explains the distinction.

- For voice or singing: Decide whether you want a close-working dynamic mic or the more detailed capture typically associated with a condenser.
- For a noisy or untreated room: Close placement with a dynamic microphone may help reduce room sound in the recording, but it will not fix room acoustics.
- For acoustic instruments: A condenser can capture detail; consider whether the room is quiet enough for that sensitivity.
- For amps and drums: Look for a mic intended for instruments and capable of handling loud sources.
- For setup simplicity: USB connects directly to a computer; XLR normally needs an audio interface or mixer. Check whether an XLR condenser needs phantom power and whether your preamp provides suitable gain.
Shure’s home-recording guide, published June 18, 2026, also highlights the SM4, MV7+, MV7i, and Nexadyne models for other needs. The five options below are a focused set of use cases, not an exhaustive shortlist. Read Shure’s home-recording guide.
Five microphones for different recording jobs
| Microphone | Best fit | Connection and key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Audio-Technica AT2020 | Home vocals, speech, and general recording with an XLR setup | Cardioid condenser with XLR output; requires 48 V phantom power. Not a direct USB microphone. |
| RØDE NT1 5th Generation | One microphone for vocals, speech, guitar, drums, or piano, with USB and XLR flexibility | USB-C or XLR. Includes USB-C and XLR cables, shock mount, and pop filter, according to RØDE. |
| Shure SM58 | Close vocal recording with a handheld dynamic microphone | Cardioid dynamic with XLR output. Close placement is important to the intended use. |
| Shure SM7B | Close studio vocals or instrumental recording | Dynamic XLR microphone. Shure recommends a working distance of 1–6 inches to reduce off-axis noise; check your interface’s available gain. |
| Shure SM57 | Guitar amps, snare, and other loud instruments | Dynamic instrument microphone with XLR output. A less natural fit if your priority is a condenser-style vocal sound. |
Audio-Technica AT2020: an XLR condenser for a starter studio
The AT2020 is a cardioid condenser with a 3-pin XLR-M output. Audio-Technica specifies a 20 Hz–20 kHz frequency response and a maximum input level of 144 dB SPL. It requires 48 V DC phantom power at 2 mA, so make sure your interface or mixer can supply it before buying. Audio-Technica’s product page lists a stand mount and pouch in the box; it lists a pop filter and shock mount as separate accessories. Audio-Technica reported cumulative sales above two million as of August 2024, a manufacturer-reported figure rather than an independent market-share measure.

RØDE NT1 5th Generation: USB or XLR in one microphone
This specific NT1 generation offers USB-C and XLR, making it useful if you want to connect directly to a computer now or use an audio interface. RØDE positions it for vocals, speech, guitars, drums, and piano, and lists an included shock mount, pop filter, and both connection cables. Its published 4 dBA self-noise figure is a manufacturer specification, not a comparative independent test. See RØDE’s NT1 5th Generation specifications. Check the model name carefully: the NT1 Signature is a separate, XLR-only model, as noted in MusicRadar’s recording microphone guide.
Shure SM58: a close-working vocal dynamic
Shure’s home-recording guide groups the SM58 with vocal microphones. Its official user guide identifies it as a cardioid dynamic microphone with an XLR connection. It suits a close, handheld vocal approach; it is not a USB mic. For setup and handling details, consult the SM58 User Guide.

Shure SM7B: a studio dynamic for close vocals
Shure identifies the SM7B for studio vocal and instrumental recording and advises speaking 1–6 inches from the microphone to reduce off-axis noise. It is an XLR dynamic microphone, so plan for an interface or mixer and check that its preamp offers adequate gain for your recording level. The microphone’s directionality and close placement can help focus a recording, but neither substitutes for a suitable room. See the SM7B User Guide.
Shure SM57: an instrument-focused dynamic
The SM57 is the clearest fit in this group for guitar amps, snare, and other loud instruments. Shure’s home-recording guide highlights it for instruments, while MusicRadar lists guitars and drums and gives a maximum SPL of 150 dB. That figure comes from an editorial source, not a comparable test across all five microphones. For a polished, detailed condenser-style vocal capture, choose a different option in this list.

Check the whole setup before you buy
A microphone is only one part of the recording chain. An XLR model needs a suitable cable and a device with an XLR input; a condenser that requires phantom power needs a source for it. USB avoids a separate audio interface for the microphone connection, but still requires a compatible computer connection and recording software.
- Confirm the exact model: In particular, distinguish the NT1 5th Generation from the NT1 Signature.
- Check power and gain: Verify phantom power for the AT2020 and adequate preamp gain for the SM7B.
- Inspect what is included: Bundle contents can vary by seller. RØDE lists cables, a shock mount, and pop filter for the NT1 5th Generation; Audio-Technica lists a stand mount and pouch for the AT2020, while its pop filter and shock mount are separate accessories.
- Match accessories to the job: A stand, pop filter, shock mount, and the right cable can affect usability and total setup cost. Do not assume every listing includes them.
The specifications above identify useful differences, but they are not a controlled head-to-head sound test. The cited manufacturer pages establish product details; they do not establish a universal winner or directly comparable independent measurements across these five microphones.
