Play the main Metro games in release-story order: Metro 2033 → Metro: Last Light → Metro Exodus. For a first playthrough, look for the Redux editions of the first two games. Metro Redux is a collection containing Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light—not a separate chapter in the story.
What order should you play the Metro games in?
- Metro 2033 — Start here. It introduces Artyom and the Moscow Metro setting.
- Metro: Last Light — Continue with the second main game and follow the next part of Artyom’s story.
- Metro Exodus — Play third. It continues Artyom’s journey beyond the Moscow tunnels.

What does Metro Redux mean?
Metro Redux is the two-game collection containing Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. It is not a fourth game or an additional story chapter. The Redux editions are updated versions to look for when choosing the first two games.
PLAION describes Metro 2033 Redux as rebuilt using the Last Light engine and gameplay framework, with Spartan and Survival play styles. Where do the Exodus expansions fit?
The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story are expansions for Metro Exodus, not main-series entries. They are optional additional content, so finish the main trilogy in order before deciding whether to play them. The official listings identify them as Exodus add-ons, but do not establish a precise spoiler-aware point within the base game for starting each expansion.

Do you need to read the Metro books first?
No. The novels are optional context, not a prerequisite for understanding the games. Deep Silver identifies Dmitry Glukhovsky as the author of the Metro novels and creator of the wider universe, but the game-order listings do not require reading them before playing.
