There is no single setting that improves every video: hardware decoding can help on a supported device but may cause instability on another. VLC is the documented example below; menu names and available controls vary by player, operating system, and version. Match the change to the symptom, then undo it if it does not help.
Which settings should you change first?
VLC desktop preferences separate common settings from advanced ones and organize relevant controls under Video, Subtitles/OSD, and Input/Codecs. In VLC Desktop 3.0 documentation, the Preferences page describes these sections; the installed version may arrange them differently. See VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop preferences guide.

- Stuttering or instability: check hardware decoding or video output settings.
- Subtitle timing is wrong: adjust subtitle delay.
- The wrong subtitle language appears: select another subtitle track.
- Text is hard to read: adjust the appearance of text subtitles.
- Characters are garbled or missing: check subtitle encoding.
How should you adjust hardware decoding for playback problems?
Start with the player’s default or automatic mode rather than assuming that acceleration should always be on or off. Hardware decoding depends on device support and stability; a change that helps one setup may cause trouble on another.

VLC for Android 3.5 documents four hardware-acceleration choices: Automatic (the default), Disabled, Decoding acceleration, and Full acceleration. If playback is frequently unstable, VideoLAN’s documentation suggests trying Disabled, particularly on slower devices. Treat that as a reversible troubleshooting step, not a universal performance recommendation. The options and labels may differ in other versions or platforms. See VLC for Android’s General Settings documentation.

VLC desktop video output
If desktop VLC shows a black, white, or garbled picture, its Windows FAQ describes disabling accelerated video output as one possible remedy. That FAQ’s instructions are version-specific and may not match current menus on every desktop system. Follow the video-output controls for your installed version; the cited Windows FAQ says to save the preference and restart VLC for the change to take effect. See VideoLAN’s VLC for Windows FAQ.
How do you fix subtitle timing, track, or text problems?
Correct subtitles that are out of sync
In VLC on Windows, the FAQ documents h and g as subtitle-delay controls, changing the delay by 50 ms per step. Use small adjustments while the video plays and judge whether the text moves closer to the spoken dialogue; the direction depends on whether subtitles need to appear earlier or later. This documented shortcut is specific to the Windows FAQ, so check the controls for your own platform and version.
