First, identify what you bought and where
Before requesting a refund, check your order receipt to identify the storefront and the country or region tied to the purchase. Policies are not interchangeable: the examples below cover Steam developer guidance, PlayStation’s US cancellation policy, Epic Games Store support guidance, Nintendo of America’s digital-products policy, and Nintendo UK preorder mechanics.

- Standalone DLC preorder: You paid for one add-on before release.
- Season pass: You paid for a package of future DLC. Steam’s guidance specifically addresses season passes; PlayStation’s policy separately covers add-ons and season passes.
- Game preorder with bonus content: The game and any bonus entitlements may have different cancellation conditions. Check which items are listed in the order and whether any have been accessed.
Also note the original release window, the publisher’s revised date, and whether the content was cancelled or delayed with no new date. Those details matter under the policies described below.
What the storefront policies say
| Store and scope | Delay or cancellation circumstance | What the policy says |
|---|---|---|
| Steamworks season-pass guidance | A developer reschedules, cancels, or substantially delays DLC included in a pass | Developers may self-reschedule a DLC release once, by up to three months. If DLC is cancelled, customers are to be offered a refund for the value of the unreleased DLC. Valve says it may take action if a release is more than three months beyond the promised window or content remains unreleased after one year; possible actions include removing the pass from sale or refunds for unreleased DLC or the whole pass. These are described options and obligations, not a guarantee that every buyer automatically receives a whole-pass refund. Steamworks season-pass documentation |
| PlayStation Store, United States | Preordered game or add-on, or a season pass | Generally, cancellation is available within 14 days of purchase if downloading or streaming included digital content has not started. If it has started, the ordinary cancellation option is unavailable unless the content is faulty. The policy does not say a delay alone guarantees a refund. PlayStation Store cancellation policy |
| Epic Games Store | Prepurchase delayed indefinitely, with no release date; or a planned date moved by less than 30 days | Epic says an indefinite delay with an unknown release date triggers an automatic full refund. For a planned date delayed by less than 30 days, Epic says buyers are notified of the new date and given an opportunity to cancel. The guidance does not establish what applies to other delay lengths. Epic Games Store delayed-prepurchase guidance |
| Nintendo of America, United States | Digital product, including a pre-purchase | Nintendo says payments are final and non-refundable except as authorized by Nintendo or required by applicable law. This is a US policy statement, not a universal rule for every region. Nintendo of America digital-products policy |
| Nintendo UK | Selected game or DLC preorder and preload | Nintendo UK explains that selected games and DLC can be preordered and preloaded, with an update unlocking content on release day. This describes preorder mechanics, not a general refund entitlement. Nintendo UK preorder FAQ |
How Steam treats delayed or cancelled season-pass DLC
Steam’s season-pass rules are unusually specific, but they are guidance for developers and Valve’s stated enforcement options—not a blanket refund promise for every kind of Steam preorder. Developers are expected to describe the pass clearly and provide release windows. The developer may move a DLC release date once by up to three months.

If a developer cancels DLC in a season pass, Valve’s documentation says customers will be offered a refund for the value of the unreleased DLC. For a delay of more than three months beyond the originally promised release window, Valve says it may act even without a customer complaint. Actions it describes include taking the pass off sale, refunding the value of unreleased DLC, or allowing a refund of the entire pass. Valve also says it may act if pass content is still unreleased after one year. The documentation does not promise that every buyer will receive a whole-pass refund at either threshold.
How PlayStation’s US cancellation window works
PlayStation’s US policy treats preordered games and add-ons separately from season passes, but both are subject to a download or streaming condition. For a season pass, the general cancellation window is 14 days from purchase. If downloading or streaming any included digital item has started, the ordinary cancellation option is lost unless the item is faulty. The policy applies a similar condition to games and add-ons.

- DIGITAL GAMES: Choose from hundreds of games, from AAA to indie options. Start playing the moment your most anticipated game is available when you pre-order and pre-download it.
- GAME AD-ONS: Extend the experience of your favorite games with add-ons and in-game currency.
- MOVIES & TV SHOWS: Rent or buy new and popular movies and TV shows from a massive library.
- PERFECT GIFT: Great as a gift for a friend or yourself. Xbox Gift Cards are easy to use, never expire, and give the freedom to pick the gift they want. Enjoy more ways to play without a credit card attached to your Microsoft account.
That is a purchase-cancellation rule, not a special guarantee for delayed DLC. The policy also says local law may grant additional rights.
How Epic distinguishes an indefinite delay from a short one
Epic’s support guidance gives two specific scenarios. If a prepurchased game is delayed indefinitely and the release date is unknown, Epic says it automatically issues a full refund. If the planned release date moves by less than 30 days, Epic says it will notify the buyer of the new date and offer an opportunity to cancel. Do not assume either outcome applies to longer delays or other circumstances not covered in that guidance.

What to do when your DLC date changes
- Open the order receipt. Confirm the storefront and country or region for the purchase.
- Check the purchase type. Determine whether the order is for standalone DLC, a season pass, or a game preorder with bonus entitlements.
- Check download and streaming status. On PlayStation, starting either for an included item can affect the ordinary cancellation option.
- Save the timeline. Keep the original release window, revised date or cancellation notice, order confirmation, and any publisher or store messages.
- Compare the facts with the applicable policy. In particular, note whether the delay is indefinite, whether a new date is known, how long it is from the promised window, and how much time has passed since purchase.
- Contact the storefront’s support route. Ask about the specific order and state whether you are requesting cancellation under the store policy or relying on a right under local law.
Store policy is not the same as consumer law
Store policies describe the platform’s stated process; they do not settle every buyer’s legal rights. The policies cited here have different regional scope, and applicable consumer law may provide additional protections. Nintendo’s US policy and PlayStation’s US policy expressly preserve exceptions for applicable law. If the store’s ordinary terms do not resolve the case, check the consumer-protection rules for the country where the purchase was made.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
