Some luxury watches and Hermès bags have recently traded above retail or achieved exceptional resale prices, but none is established as being worth more every year. Value retention is a snapshot against retail; appreciation is a change over time, and neither guarantees what a particular owner will recover after fees. The examples below show where recent market evidence exists—not a ranking of guaranteed investments.
What the market figures can—and cannot—show
WatchCharts defines watch value retention as the premium or discount at which a current-production watch trades on the secondary market relative to retail. Its brand-level snapshot, accessed October 7, 2026, put Patek Philippe at 23.9% above retail, Rolex at 15.6% above, and Audemars Piguet at 5.8% above. Those are brand averages at a point in time, not forecasts or annual returns. A separate WatchCharts update in 2025 found Rolex and Patek Philippe above retail on average, while Audemars Piguet had slipped below retail in Q2; results varied by collection and model.

Bag figures are equally dependent on what was measured. Rebag’s 2025 report gives brand and style retention figures from its own analysis, while SACLÀB reports average resale values for a defined group of bags sold through its platform. Auction records, by contrast, are completed sales of particular lots. These measures cannot be treated as interchangeable.
For any candidate, compare the exact reference or style, retail price and date, same-period resale evidence, condition and completeness, material and rarity, sale channel, geography, and transaction costs. A record auction result for a rare limited edition is not a useful estimate of an ordinary example’s resale value.

Five watch examples with relevant market evidence
1. Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
Rolex’s positive brand-level retention does not mean every Daytona rises, but one exact reference has a dated market signal: WatchCharts listed the Cosmograph Daytona reference 126508 at a secondary-market price of US$68,446 with a one-year change of 25.5%, last updated October 5, 2026. That is one reference’s tracked movement over one year, not proof of a recurring annual gain or a seller’s net proceeds.
Completed auction results offer a different kind of evidence. Phillips reported selling a Daytona reference 116508 for CHF 60,960 and a reference 16519 for CHF 40,640 in its September 4, 2026 Geneva online sale. Those figures are sale prices for specific lots; they do not reveal the original purchase cost or the seller’s proceeds after costs.
2. Patek Philippe Nautilus
WatchCharts’ 2025 mid-year update identified Nautilus sports models among the Patek Philippe models trading above retail and pointed to Nautilus demand as a factor in the brand’s recent activity. That supports treating the collection as an area of market interest, not assuming every Nautilus reference or purchase date produces a gain.

3. Patek Philippe Aquanaut
The same 2025 update also associated Aquanaut demand with recent Patek Philippe activity. The evidence is collection-level context rather than a dated performance figure for a specific Aquanaut reference, so it cannot establish a return for an individual watch.
4. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
The Royal Oak illustrates why brand averages can mislead: WatchCharts said Royal Oak models dominated Audemars Piguet’s above-retail list in its 2025 analysis even though the brand had fallen below retail on average in Q2 2025. A model’s place on an above-retail list is not evidence that all Royal Oaks appreciate, or that the premium persists.
5. Vacheron Constantin Overseas
WatchCharts’ 2025 update said Overseas models retained the most value among Vacheron Constantin collections. It did not provide a specific retention percentage in the cited update, so the point is a within-brand comparison—not a quantified return or a claim that every Overseas sells above retail.

Two Hermès bag examples with resale and auction evidence
6. Hermès Birkin
Two resale reports offer useful but non-equivalent context. Rebag’s 2025 Clair Report release reported 138% average value retention for Hermès overall and said its decade-long Birkin analysis found resale values up 92% since 2015, compared with a 43% rise in Hermès retail prices over that period. These are company-reported historical figures, not a forecast for a future buyer or a result that applies to every bag.
SACLÀB’s figures cover average resale values for regular-leather Birkin and Kelly bags sold through saclab.com from January 2020 to July 2026, excluding limited editions. The platform says the averages remained above pre-pandemic levels and original boutique retail. The platform-specific sample should not be confused with all global sales.
Rare examples can sell for far more, but those prices are outliers, not typical-value estimates. Christie’s reported US$215,900 for a 2024 Rainy Days Faubourg Birkin 20 and US$165,100 for a 2020 Nuit Faubourg Birkin 20 in its 2025 New York sale; a Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Birkin 25 sold for US$152,400. In Hong Kong in Spring 2026, a rare white Faubourg Sellier Birkin 20 sold for HK$4,318,000, reported as US$551,243. Christie’s described it as a Faubourg Birkin record and the most valuable handbag sold in Asia. In Paris in June 2026, a 2024 Faubourg Rouge Sellier Birkin 20, described as a limited edition of fewer than 10 examples, sold for €635,000. Rarity, construction, and location are central to understanding those results.

7. Hermès Kelly
SACLÀB’s regular-leather Birkin and Kelly sample provides platform-specific evidence for the two styles together, not a separate universal Kelly return. Rebag’s 2025 report listed 282% retention for the Kelly Mini II, alongside 183% for the Sellier Birkin and 137% for the Constance. The Kelly Mini II figure applies to that named style in Rebag’s report; it should not be generalized to other Kelly sizes, materials, or conditions.

- Identify it precisely. Record the watch reference or bag style, size, material, hardware, year, and any limited-edition or special-order details.
- Set a retail baseline. Find the original retail price and the date it applied. Without that baseline, a resale price alone does not establish value retention.
- Use comparable completed sales or a clearly defined market estimate. Match the item, condition, time period, and geography as closely as possible. Keep a platform average, a current market estimate, and an auction result in separate categories.
- Account for the actual sale. Check condition, box and papers where relevant, authenticity documentation, venue, fees, and other costs. A headline sale price is not necessarily the amount an owner receives.
- Separate past performance from a buying decision. Historical premiums or retention figures describe the period and sample reported; they do not establish future appreciation or a risk-adjusted investment return.
Why these examples are not a guaranteed investment list
Exceptional auction lots can set records without representing the usual market. Secondary-market averages can be shaped by sample selection, condition, and sales channel. Hermès reported that Leather Goods and Saddlery grew 18% in 2024 at constant exchange rates, while its Watches business line declined 4%; company-wide or business-line growth does not prove that any individual item appreciates on resale. No evidence here establishes predictable future gains, annual appreciation, or seller net proceeds after fees.
Phillips’ May 2026 Geneva Watch Auction XXIII totaled CHF 74.8 million and set 43 world records, including CHF 7,961,000 for a Patek Philippe Ref. 2523 “South America” world-timer. That result, like record handbag sales, demonstrates a market for exceptional collector pieces—not typical returns for ordinary buyers.
