In Qwen’s 2024 comparison, it scored higher than Gemma2-9b-IT and Llama3.1-8B-Instruct on most listed tasks, though Llama led on IFeval strict-prompt. Those are vendor-reported benchmark results, not evidence that Qwen improves learning or is best for every student.
Which local AI model is best for studying?
For a practical text-focused starting point, choose Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct if your priorities include math or coding help and your computer can run that variant comfortably. The instruction-tuned label matters: it identifies a model adapted to follow conversational requests, unlike a base model intended for further training or adaptation.

Keep the recommendation narrow. The comparison is between specific generations—Qwen2.5, Llama 3.1, and Gemma 2—not a definitive ranking of the Qwen, Llama, and Gemma families in 2026. Current model libraries include later generations, and newer releases can change the choice.

What the benchmark comparison says—and does not say
Qwen’s 2024 results for Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct include 75.5 on MATH, 91.6 on GSM8K, 84.8 on HumanEval, and 71.2 on IFeval strict-prompt. In the same Qwen table, the MATH scores are 44.3 for Gemma2-9b-IT and 51.9 for Llama3.1-8B-Instruct. On IFeval strict-prompt, Qwen’s 71.2 is below Llama’s 75.9. These figures and comparisons are reported by Qwen, not an independent head-to-head study of students using the models. See the Qwen2.5 overview.

Benchmarks assess performance on defined tasks under particular evaluation setups. They do not establish that a model’s explanations are easy for you to learn from, that its answer to your assignment is correct, or that using it improves grades. Treat its output as a draft: check calculations, code, definitions, and citations against course materials or trusted sources.
Compare exact variants, not family names
Each family spans different sizes and capabilities. A smaller model may be easier to run but less capable on some tasks; a larger one can require substantially more storage and computing resources. Variant, quantization, instruction tuning, and runtime all matter.
| Model or family | What the cited listing or comparison establishes | Study-relevant implication |
|---|---|---|
| Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct | In Qwen’s 2024 table, 75.5 MATH, 91.6 GSM8K, 84.8 HumanEval, and 71.2 IFeval strict-prompt. Qwen2.5 sizes range from 0.5B to 72B. Qwen2.5 overview | A reasonable text-first candidate for math and coding practice; scores are not a measure of student outcomes. |
| Llama 3.1 | Ollama lists 8B, 70B, and 405B variants. Its listed download sizes are 4.9 GB for 8B and 43 GB for 70B. Ollama listing, accessed 2026 | The 8B model is closer in size to Qwen2.5-7B than the much larger listed options. Download size is not a RAM or VRAM requirement. |
| Gemma 2 9B | Qwen’s comparison reports 44.3 on MATH for Gemma2-9b-IT. Qwen2.5 overview | That one reported benchmark result does not establish how well the model will support your subject or learning style. |
| Gemma 3 | Ollama lists variants from 270M through 27B; its 4B, 12B, and 27B listings describe image input and 128K context windows. The listed download size for Gemma 3 27B is 17 GB. Ollama listing, accessed 2026 | Image input may help with diagrams or photographed notes, depending on the exact model and app. The 27B file is a larger download; that size is not a universal memory specification. |

Math and coding practice
Start with an instruction-tuned Qwen2.5 variant near the 7B size if your hardware supports it. Ask it to show intermediate steps, then verify the result independently. Qwen’s reported MATH, GSM8K, and HumanEval scores make this a defensible candidate for those task types, not a guarantee of correctness on a particular problem.

Consider a Gemma 3 variant with image input—Ollama describes this feature for 4B, 12B, and 27B. Image support can make a model more convenient when study material is visual, but the listing does not guarantee accurate reading of every image. Check whether your local app passes images to the model and review any extracted text or interpretation.

Long notes and multilingual material
Qwen’s overview says most Qwen2.5 variants support a 128K-token context and up to 8K generated tokens, and describes multilingual capabilities. These are model-family claims; check the exact variant and the app’s settings rather than assuming every deployment exposes the same limits. A large context can accommodate more material, but it does not ensure faithful recall of every detail.

Model-file size helps estimate download and storage needs, but it is not a memory minimum. The cited listings give examples ranging from 4.9 GB for Llama 3.1 8B to 43 GB for Llama 3.1 70B, with Gemma 3 27B at 17 GB; they do not establish required RAM or VRAM, or expected speed. Check the exact quantized model and runtime documentation for compatibility with your system.
Ollama and compatible local applications offer ways to run models on-device, and Qwen’s model card points to quantized versions for Ollama, LM Studio, and llama.cpp-compatible use. Availability and compatibility vary by variant. A quantized file can reduce resource needs, but model quality and behavior may differ from other versions.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor Qwen, distinguish an instruction-tuned model from a base model. The Qwen2.5-32B model card says, “We do not recommend using base language models for conversations.” That warning is specifically about the cited base model; for study chat, select a suitable instruct/chat variant and confirm its exact model card and license. Local does not automatically mean private
If inference genuinely runs on your device, your prompts can remain there. But the model name alone does not establish how an app handles data: telemetry, cloud fallback, plugins, and synchronization may change what leaves your computer. Check the selected application’s current settings and privacy policy before entering personal, school, or confidential material.
How to make a fair study comparison
- Pick comparable variants. Compare models near the size and quantization you can actually run; do not treat a 7B model and a 70B model as equivalent options.
- Use representative tasks. Try the same few questions from your subjects, including one that requires explanation rather than only a final answer.
- Check the learning experience. See whether the model follows your requested level, explains steps clearly, and admits uncertainty when appropriate.
- Verify the substance. Compare its work with an answer key, textbook, instructor materials, or independently tested code.
- Confirm practical fit. Check image handling if needed, context limits for your notes, local runtime compatibility, and the model’s download and storage demands.
This small personal comparison is more relevant to your workflow than assuming a benchmark winner will suit every subject. It still cannot establish that a model improves learning over time.
Are newer Qwen, Llama, or Gemma models covered by this verdict?
No. The results above address Qwen2.5 against Llama 3.1 and Gemma 2. Ollama’s current library includes later Qwen and Gemma releases, and Google’s Gemma model documentation describes newer models. Those releases are outside the specific benchmark comparison here, so this article does not claim Qwen2.5 is the best model family overall in 2026.
