The right choice depends on the areas treated, the garment’s fit, and your surgeon’s recovery plan. Ask your operating surgeon before switching garments or adding foam or a board.
What can you wear instead of a faja after lipo 360?
A faja is one type of compression garment. Depending on your procedure and recovery stage, your surgeon may approve a post-surgical compression garment or an adjustable abdominal binder instead. The American Academy of Dermatology says liposuction aftercare may include a compression garment, while the American Society of Plastic Surgeons describes an elastic bandage, support bra, or compression garment and advises patients to ask their plastic surgeon how long to wear it (AAD; ASPS).

These options are not automatically interchangeable. Your lipo 360 may include treatment across the abdomen and flanks, and the garment needs to cover the areas your surgeon wants supported while fitting comfortably. General guidance does not establish one best garment for every patient.

| Post-surgical compression garment | Provides compression over the areas covered; this is the broad category described in patient guidance from the AAD, ASPS, and MedlinePlus. | That its coverage, design, and fit suit your treated areas and recovery stage. |
| Abdominal binder | An adjustable compression option that may be considered when approved by the surgical team. It is not established as a universal replacement for a faja. | Whether it provides the coverage and support your surgeon prescribed, and how to adjust it. |
| Foam padding or abdominal board | Accessories used in some practice-specific instructions for selected treatment areas; they are not established as necessary for everyone. | Whether you need one, where it should sit, and when to use it. Florida Plastic Surgery, for example, mentions foam or a board in its own postoperative instructions. |
How to choose a garment with your surgeon
Instead of choosing by product name alone, compare options against your surgeon’s instructions. Ask about:

- BREATHABLE & ADJUSTABLE: Made of premium, latex-free, breathable, comfortable, high-quality and lightweight materials. Provides compression to the upper and lower abdomen while improving blood circulation and oxygen levels. This in turn reduces swelling and promotes healing. Built to help support the lower back and improve posture during breastfeeding.
- RECOVERY & REDUCE DISCOMFORT: Whether recovering from surgery, injury, or just need extra support, abdominal binders can stabilize your core and improve muscle tone. Provides effective support after hernia surgery, c-section, natural child birth and abdominal injuries. Restores muscle tone and the shape of your abdomen, while supporting your lower back and holding tummy in. Redefines your waistline and relieves back pain. Helps reduce post-surgery complications and improves postpartum healing
- HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SIZE: Using a soft, flexible tape measure, find the circumference around the widest part of your body where you plan to wear the binder. 20-30 in. Fits 20"-30", 30-45 in, fits 30”- 45”, 45-60 in. fits 45”- 60”, 60-75 in. fits 60”- 75”, 75-90 in. fits 75”- 90”, and 90-105 in. fits 90”- 105”. Wear it on top or under your clothing.
- Coverage: Does it cover the abdomen, flanks, and any other treated areas your surgeon wants compressed?
- Fit and adjustability: Can you wear it as directed without digging in, creating creases, or chafing?
- Comfort and skin tolerance: Can you tolerate it while following the plan? Tell the surgical team if it irritates your skin or is painful.
- Practical use: Does it allow access for dressing changes, washing, and ordinary movement when your care team permits those activities?
- Clinical compatibility: Has your operating surgeon approved this specific garment or accessory for your procedure and recovery stage?
If a garment digs in, creases your skin, or chafes, contact your surgeon rather than tightening it or adding more compression on your own. The Florida Plastic Surgery instructions specifically advise patients to report those fit problems; follow your own surgical team’s guidance if it differs.
Are foam, boards, or stage 1 and stage 2 garments required?
No universal sequence is established in the patient guidance cited here. Some practices recommend foam padding or an abdominal board for particular areas, but that does not make either item a standard requirement after every lipo 360. Likewise, “stage 1” and “stage 2” labels should not be treated as universal medical standards or as a reason to change garments on a set timeline without your surgeon’s direction.

Research on postoperative compression does not establish that one product prevents seromas, guarantees a smooth contour, or speeds healing for every lipo 360 patient. A 2024 systematic review examined post-abdominoplasty outcomes, not lipo-360-specific results (systematic review). A 2023 practical review considered compression across plastic surgery and noted that the evidence is not uniform (practical review). Those broader findings should not be presented as proof of a particular benefit after your operation.
What to ask before replacing your faja
- Ask your operating surgeon whether a binder or another compression garment is suitable for your procedure.
- Confirm which areas need coverage and whether foam or a board is indicated for you.
- Ask how long and when to wear the approved garment, and what to do for dressing changes or washing.
- Have the surgical team assess any garment that digs in, creases, chafes, or otherwise feels wrong before changing its fit or adding compression.
If you are shopping, “post-surgical compression garment” is a useful category phrase, but a listing alone cannot confirm that a garment is appropriate for your operation. Bring its design and sizing details to your surgeon or care team for approval.
