It also points to different choices for Windows portability, lower-cost Windows use, ChromeOS, gaming, and demanding creative or engineering work. The right pick depends on what you do and which memory, storage, and graphics configuration you buy—not just the model name.
Which laptop should you buy?
WIRED’s default recommendation for most people is the Apple MacBook Air (M5, 2026). The guide highlights its performance, battery life, trackpad, speakers, and thin, fanless design. That makes it a general-purpose starting point, not a rule that it is best for every workload.

The guide says the MacBook Air’s starting price recently rose from $1,099 to $1,299, while its displayed Amazon offer was $1,099 when the guide was captured. Those figures are time-sensitive and may not reflect today’s price or the same configuration. Check the live price and compare the memory and storage included before deciding.
Match the recommendation to your workload
| Need | WIRED’s pick | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday work and general use | Apple MacBook Air (M5, 2026) | WIRED’s default recommendation; prices and offers can change. |
| Compact Windows laptop for travel | Dell XPS 13 (2026) | The 8 GB RAM configuration is limiting; the guide recommends considering 16 GB. |
| Lower-cost Windows laptop | HP OmniBook 5 | The tested configuration had Snapdragon X, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB storage, and a 14-inch OLED display. Discounted configurations vary. |
| Chromebook or convertible | Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 | It has a touchscreen and 360-degree hinge; the guide says it often discounts from a high full retail price. |
| Gaming | Lenovo LOQ 15 | Compare the graphics configuration and current price; gaming-laptop offers fluctuate. |
| Demanding creative or engineering work | Apple MacBook Pro (M5 Max) | A specialized, expensive choice rather than a default laptop for everyone. |
How to choose between configurations
A product family can include substantially different machines. Before comparing prices, match the specific configurations and decide what your workload requires.
#1 Best Overall
- FULL HD IPS DISPLAY - Enjoy vibrant, crystal-clear images with 178-degree wide-viewing angles
- AMD RYZEN 3 30 PROCESSOR - Everyday performance you can count on; Multitask, stream, game casually, and edit photos smoothly with responsive power and vibrant HDR visuals
- ENJOY UP TO 14 HOURS AND 15 MINUTES OF BATTERY LIFE - HP Fast Charge restores battery from 0 to 50% in approximately 45 minutes
- AMD RADEON 610M GRAPHICS - Experience smooth entertainment; Built for streaming and multitasking, enjoy realistic visuals and efficient performance for work and play
- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
- Memory: Check RAM, especially if you keep many applications or browser tabs open or work with large projects. WIRED specifically cautions that the XPS 13’s 8 GB version limits performance and points buyers toward 16 GB.
- Storage: Compare capacity as well as price. The OmniBook 5 configuration described in the guide includes 512 GB; other versions may differ.
- Graphics: For gaming and graphics-heavy creative tasks, identify the GPU in the exact model. LOQ 15 variants can differ, so a model name alone does not establish gaming performance or value.
- Daily comfort and mobility: Consider weight, battery life, display quality, keyboard and touchpad comfort, and ports alongside speed. These affect whether a laptop works well away from a desk.
- Sustained workload: For gaming or long creative and engineering jobs, consider sustained performance, not only a brief peak or a headline processor specification.
- Current value: Compare the price of equivalent configurations. Prices and discounts move, and the lowest listing may be for a different amount of memory, storage, or graphics capability.
What WIRED says its laptop testing covers
The recommendations come from WIRED’s editorial laptop guide by Luke Larsen, published September 25, 2026 and updated in September 2026. Larsen says he has reviewed laptops for well over a decade and sometimes tested more than 30 devices in a year; the guide also reports that WIRED contributor Chris Null has tested laptops for 25 years. These are experience claims attributed to the guide, not industry-wide statistics.
WIRED describes comparing laptops with similar equipment and weighing performance, usability, portability, and price. Its reported review process includes:

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- Hands-on checks of weight and thinness, hinge, chassis, keyboard, touchpad, and practical details such as port placement and preinstalled software, with use as a daily laptop for days or weeks.
- Display measurements using a Spyder colorimeter for brightness, contrast, color saturation, and accuracy; HDR peak brightness is also tested on screens that support HDR.
- Webcam and speaker assessments, including their suitability for calls and streaming.
- More than 20 synthetic benchmarks adapted to the processor and operating system. Named suites include Geekbench, PCMark, 3DMark, Procyon, GFXBench, Puget Bench, Superposition, and Cinebench; the guide also mentions game testing such as Cyberpunk 2077.
- Monitoring of fan noise, surface temperature, and overall battery life.
The guide says it does not generally report raw benchmark scores. Its recommendations should therefore be read as WIRED’s editorial judgments based on the described process, rather than as a universal ranking or formal industry standard.
Check the price and exact model before buying
Prices, offers, configurations, and availability can change. WIRED notes that OmniBook 5 discounts change frequently and gaming-laptop offers fluctuate. Confirm the live listing’s configuration and price before purchase; do not assume an offer shown in a dated guide is still available or matches another listing.
