These five laptops are useful candidates for distinct needs, not a controlled ranking—available reviews do not compare their keyboards under identical conditions. Check the exact model generation and configuration before buying, since keyboard details and availability can vary.
How to choose among these keyboard laptops
Start with the layout and feel you prefer, then weigh screen size, portability, operating system, workload, configuration, and local price. “Comfortable for hours” is a personal judgment, not a universal property. The observations below are attributed to individual reviewers or to Dell where they describe its own design.

Five laptops, matched to different typing preferences
1. Lenovo ThinkPad T16: full-size keyboard preference
TechRadar’s 2026 programming laptop guide names the ThinkPad T16 its top general coding pick and calls out its full-size keyboard. That makes it a strong candidate if you want a spacious layout for coding or extended writing. The source material does not identify the exact generation or configuration, so verify the specific T16 listing and keyboard before purchase.

2. Lenovo ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition (2025): premium large-screen Windows choice
RTINGS describes the keyboard and touchpad as excellent. It also says the X9 15 is more expensive and less portable than the MacBook Air alternative discussed in its 2026 laptop guide. The 15-inch size and premium positioning make it a better fit for someone prioritizing a larger-screen Windows machine than for someone seeking the smallest, least expensive travel laptop.
3. Dell XPS 13 (2026): compact conventional chiclet keys
The XPS 13 offers a traditional chiclet layout, unlike the zero-lattice design on the XPS 14 and XPS 16. In Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 review, the reviewer found the key travel shallow and the keys somewhat stiff, but said the layout caused no confusion and seemed usable for hours. Consider it if you want a compact Windows laptop and are comfortable with a shallower, firmer feel; that reviewer impression is not a guarantee that the keyboard will suit every typist.
Rank #2
4. Dell XPS 14 (2026): well-spaced zero-lattice layout
RTINGS calls the XPS 14 keyboard well-spaced and satisfying in its 2026 review. Dell describes the zero-lattice design as having larger keys without spaces between them. The design description is the manufacturer’s claim, while the assessment of spacing and feel is RTINGS’ review impression. This is a larger XPS option if you are curious about that distinct layout, but it is not an entirely separate keyboard approach from the XPS 16.
5. Dell XPS 16 (2026): large screen with a physical function row
Tom’s Hardware reports that the physical function row returned and tactile feedback improved on the XPS 16. Its reviewer also notes a learning curve with the zero-lattice design and says the differently sized arrow keys can be difficult to locate by feel. These tradeoffs matter if you rely on physical function keys or frequently navigate with arrow keys. The XPS 16 review and Dell’s design description both address its keyboard; Dell’s claims about key stability and feedback should be distinguished from the reviewer’s observations.

What Dell means by “zero-lattice”
The XPS 14 and XPS 16 use larger keys without the usual visible gaps between them, while the XPS 13 uses conventional chiclet keys. Dell says the zero-lattice design improves stability to reduce accidental presses and makes feedback crisper and more responsive. Those are Dell’s own claims in its March 3, 2026 article, The Design Behind the New XPS 14 and XPS 16, not independent test results. TechRadar also discusses the XPS 14 keyboard in its 2026 laptop coverage.
Shared design does not mean identical typing experience: the XPS 14 and XPS 16 differ in overall size and the XPS 16 review specifically notes its function row and arrow-key considerations. If possible, try the exact laptop in person, especially if the gapless layout is unfamiliar to you.

Check the exact laptop before buying
- Confirm the model year and generation. Do not assume a review of a 2026 model describes an older version with the same name. For the ThinkPad T16 in particular, identify the generation and exact configuration before you choose.
- Check the keyboard layout and physical controls. Look for the key arrangement you prefer, including whether it has a physical function row and the arrow-key shape that suits your habits.
- Verify configuration-specific details. Confirm backlighting and any other required features on the manufacturer or retailer listing for the exact SKU; the reviewed sources do not establish a consistent backlighting comparison for all five.
- Balance typing against the whole laptop. Consider screen size, portability, operating system, intended workload, and current local price alongside keyboard feel. The cited guides treat those as part of the buying decision, not afterthoughts.
- Try the keys if you can. Typing a few lines may reveal whether shallow travel, stiffness, key spacing, or a gapless design works for you better than a reviewer’s description can.
