For a first playthrough, play the earlier KINGDOM HEARTS story entries before HD 2.8 when practical—especially Birth by Sleep before its included 0.2 episode. Within the collection, play Dream Drop Distance HD, then 0.2 Birth by Sleep, and watch χ Back Cover. That is a newcomer-friendly recommendation, not an official required order.
What is included in KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8?
Square Enix describes KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue as a three-part collection: a remastered game, a playable episode, and a movie. Its official product page identifies the components and their story connections; the PlayStation Store listing also lists all three.

- Dream Drop Distance HD: a full-HD remaster of the game.
- 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –: a new playable episode set after the storyline of Birth by Sleep and linked to KINGDOM HEARTS III.
- χ Back Cover: a story movie, not a game you play.
Which games should you play before HD 2.8?
If you are new to the series, the most useful preparation is to play the earlier story entries before starting the collection. The clearest specific recommendation is Birth by Sleep: Square Enix says 0.2 takes place after its storyline, so playing it first gives you context for the episode.
There is no publisher-prescribed, complete checklist of games that every player must finish before HD 2.8. The series’ story extends beyond its numbered games, so treating only those as required preparation can leave gaps. For broader context, consider working through the earlier story entries collected in KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX before moving on, if that fits your interest and available platform. This is a recommendation for newcomers, not a rule stated by Square Enix.

What order should you play the games in HD 2.8?
- Play Dream Drop Distance HD. It is the collection’s main remastered game and a sensible starting point within 2.8.
- Play 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –. If you have not played Birth by Sleep, do that first when possible; 0.2 follows its storyline and links to KINGDOM HEARTS III.
- Watch χ Back Cover. It is the collection’s movie component, rather than another playable game.
This order is practical guidance based on the components’ formats and stated story links. The official product descriptions identify what is included but do not mandate a single order for every component.

You can begin HD 2.8 without completing a prescribed series checklist: the consulted official listings do not set one. But the collection is not simply a standalone game, and earlier entries provide story context—most directly, Birth by Sleep before 0.2. If your goal is to follow the story with fewer gaps, play earlier entries first; if your goal is just to explore what is bundled in 2.8, start with Dream Drop Distance HD and use the recommended order above.
