Fossil bones can reveal two different kinds of age: how old an animal was when it died and how long ago it lived. Microscopic growth lines in some bones can help estimate an individual’s age and growth pattern. Rock layers and suitable dating methods establish when the fossil entered Earth’s history. Bone anatomy and growth patterns can also contribute to evolutionary interpretations—but only when compared with other specimens and geological evidence.
What “age” means for a fossil
In paleontology, “age” can refer either to an animal’s age at death or to the fossil’s age in geological time. These are separate questions and are answered with different evidence.

- Age at death: Bone microstructure may preserve growth lines that researchers can examine to estimate how old an individual was.
- Geological age: The fossil’s position in rock layers and, where appropriate, numerical dating help establish when it lived.
Knowing one does not automatically establish the other: growth lines do not date the surrounding rock, and a rock-layer date does not reveal how old the animal was when it died.

Researchers can prepare a very thin slice of bone and inspect it under a microscope. In some bones, successive growth lines record periods of growth. Counting readable lines can help estimate an individual’s age; their spacing can offer clues about growth rate and whether the animal was still growing.

The method is sometimes compared with counting tree rings, but it is not a simple count that works on every bone. Lines may be incomplete or difficult to interpret, and preservation varies by tissue and specimen. The American Museum of Natural History notes that some bones preserve a more complete set of growth lines than others; a large limb bone that fossilizes well may not be the best record for estimating age. See the museum’s explanation in “The Young and the Fast”.
Skeletochronology—the study of growth marks in bone—also applies beyond dinosaurs. A 2008 U.S. Geological Survey protocol describes estimating the age of anurans, such as frogs and toads, by examining growth lines in phalange cross-sections. That protocol illustrates why the sampled bone, its preparation and careful interpretation matter; it is not a universal procedure for every animal or fossil.
How scientists establish when a fossil lived
Geological dating concerns the fossil’s place in Earth history, not the age of the individual animal. Scientists use the fossil’s setting and, when materials permit, numerical dating to build that timeline.

Rock layers provide relative order
In an undisturbed sequence of sedimentary rocks, lower layers are generally older than the layers above them. This establishes relative order: one fossil-bearing layer is older or younger than another, but the ordering alone does not give an exact number of years. Researchers can also compare strata and characteristic fossils to relate finds from different locations. The American Museum of Natural History’s guide to dating fossils explains this distinction.
Numerical dates depend on the material and timescale
Radiometric dating uses the predictable decay of radioactive elements, but no single technique suits every material or age range. Depending on the geological setting, scientists may date associated rocks above or below a fossil-bearing layer rather than the fossil bone itself. They may also combine numerical dates with geological context and fossil comparisons. The Smithsonian’s overview of dating describes relative and absolute approaches.
Radiocarbon dating is useful for suitable, comparatively recent organic material; it cannot date the deep-time ages of non-avian dinosaurs. The Smithsonian reports carbon-14’s half-life as 5,730 years, but that figure does not make radiocarbon appropriate for every fossil. The method and material must match the age being investigated.

The Smithsonian uses Lucy’s skeleton as an example of dating evidence working together: it reports her age as about 3.18 million years, following an earlier range from biostratigraphic evidence that was later constrained by absolute dating. This is a case-specific estimate, not a universal level of precision. The retrieved Smithsonian page does not show a publication year for these figures.

Bone shape can reveal anatomical features and suggest how an animal used its body. Microscopic structure can add clues about growth and life history. Paleontologists compare these traits across fossils and living species, placing them in geological context to investigate similarities, differences and change over time.
Development matters, too: fossils of juveniles may look different from those of adults, and comparisons across related species can help explain that variation. The American Museum of Natural History discusses juvenile protoceratopsians whose traits resemble adults of a related, more primitive species in its account of what paleontology studies.

These comparisons support evolutionary hypotheses; they do not make one isolated bone a complete record of ancestry. A fossil’s anatomy is most informative alongside other specimens, the geological sequence and independent evidence. As the museum puts it, “Fossil bone is a code that records an animal’s biology in microscopic detail; cracking that code will be among the greatest challenges of 21st-century paleontology.” The quotation appears on the American Museum of Natural History’s “Bones…and Beyond” page, without a named speaker.
What a fossil bone can—and cannot—tell you
- It can help estimate an individual’s age at death when suitable bone preserves readable growth lines.
- It can offer clues about growth and anatomy through line spacing, microscopic structure and bone shape.
- It cannot, by itself, establish the fossil’s exact geological age; that depends on rock context and dating methods suited to the materials and timescale.
- It rarely settles an evolutionary question alone. Interpretation depends on comparison with other fossils and geological evidence.
The American Museum of Natural History sums up the importance of dating context: “Figuring out the age of fossils, or dating them, is key to understanding them.”
