Short answer: Do not skip Kingdom Hearts, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II, Birth by Sleep, Dream Drop Distance, or Kingdom Hearts III if you want the main narrative to make sense. If you are racing to KHIII, watch or recap 358/2 Days, recap Re:coded, and defer χ/Union χ. After KHIII, Re Mind and Melody of Memory contain story you will miss if you omit them.
The practical skip list
There is no official Square Enix checklist that labels a Kingdom Hearts title “safe to skip.” The useful distinction is whether a game supplies plot needed by the next mainline entry, character context that a later game assumes, or optional background for the wider mythology. The recommendations below are therefore an editorial route based on Square Enix’s official plot summaries and the intended endpoint of your playthrough.

| Game | Priority for a first-time story run | If you cannot play it | What you miss by skipping |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kingdom Hearts (Final Mix in current collections) | Do not skip | Do not replace it with a short recap | The premise, Sora, Riku, Kairi, the Keyblade, worlds and the first major conflict |
| Re:Chain of Memories | Do not skip | Watch its story or use a detailed recap | Castle Oblivion, memory manipulation, Sora’s sleep and Riku’s parallel story |
| Kingdom Hearts II | Do not skip | Only use a full story presentation if necessary | Roxas, Organization XIII and the immediate continuation of Chain of Memories |
| 358/2 Days | Story important; gameplay optional | Watch the collection’s cinematic version | Roxas, Axel and Xion’s friendship and difficult choices |
| Birth by Sleep | Do not skip | Watch all three character routes | Terra, Ventus, Aqua and the earlier Keyblade conflict |
| Re:coded | Lower priority before KHIII | Recap its plot | Data-Sora and the investigation of pain connected to Sora |
| Dream Drop Distance | Do not skip | Use a complete story recap | The later conflict and the setup that leads into KHIII |
| χ/Union χ | Optional for a KHIII endpoint; important for deep lore | Defer it, then catch up later | The oldest era and its historical explanation of the Keyblade world |
| 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage | Useful bridge, not a prerequisite for understanding the whole saga | Read or watch a synopsis | Aqua’s situation and a short transition toward KHIII |
| Kingdom Hearts III | Do not skip | It is the endpoint of this route | The resolution of the main saga’s conflict |
| Re Mind | Optional only if you accept missing added KHIII story | Watch a story explanation | Additional events during and after KHIII’s climax |
| Melody of Memory | Optional for the pre-KHIII route; recommended afterward | Watch its story sections and recap | A broad saga retelling plus Kairi’s perspective after KHIII |
Do you have to play every game before Kingdom Hearts III?
No. You do not need to play every release interactively, but you do need the story of the six core entries: Kingdom Hearts, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II, Birth by Sleep, Dream Drop Distance and Kingdom Hearts III. The side labels are misleading: several “spin-offs” introduce characters or events that the numbered games treat as established history.
A sensible time-saving route is to play those six, watch 358/2 Days, recap Re:coded, and postpone χ/Union χ. Add 0.2 Birth by Sleep if you want the transition into KHIII to feel complete. This route preserves the direct setup for the numbered games without requiring every original handheld or mobile format.

Why Re:Chain of Memories is usually not skippable
Re:Chain of Memories is the bridge between the first game and Kingdom Hearts II. In Castle Oblivion, Sora’s memories are manipulated while he climbs through rooms shaped by his recollections. Riku has a separate story in the same setting, and Sora ultimately enters a long sleep so his memories can be restored.
Kingdom Hearts II begins after those events. Without them, the opening’s changes in Sora’s situation, the organization’s interest in him and the importance of several returning characters can appear arbitrary. The card-based combat is the common reason people avoid the game; that is a gameplay objection, not a reason to discard its plot. Use a cinematic version or a detailed recap that covers both Sora’s and Riku’s campaigns.
Can you watch 358/2 Days instead of playing it?
Yes. For most first-time players, watching 358/2 Days is the best compromise. The original game is a Nintendo DS title, while the HD collection presents its story as a cinematic compilation rather than a full playable remake. The format loses the interactive missions, but it preserves the central 358-day account of Roxas, Axel and Xion, including their friendship and the choices that hurt it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConsume that story before or around Kingdom Hearts II. It explains why Roxas matters, gives Axel’s actions emotional context and makes Xion’s role legible. Calling the title “skippable” because you can skip its gameplay confuses two different decisions: you may skip the original missions, but skipping the story removes context that later games build on.

Birth by Sleep: the prequel you should keep
Birth by Sleep takes place before the first Kingdom Hearts and follows three playable protagonists: Terra, Ventus and Aqua. Their separate routes show an earlier Keyblade conflict and establish relationships and consequences that reverberate through later entries.
The three-route structure can make the game feel optional when you are focused on Sora. It is not optional for a full story route. Play all three campaigns, or watch a presentation that covers all of them; viewing only one character’s ending leaves major causes and outcomes unexplained. Aqua’s circumstances also lead directly into material revisited by 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage and KHIII.
Re:coded: lower priority, not meaningless
Re:coded is the easiest pre-KHIII entry to defer. Its official synopsis concerns a data version of Sora investigating a message and pain connected to the real Sora. Much of its function is reflective and connective rather than a large new world-changing chapter.

Why Dream Drop Distance belongs in the main route
Dream Drop Distance advances the later conflict and prepares the conditions for Kingdom Hearts III. Its perspective shifts between Sora and Riku, and its events establish the state of the heroes and antagonists immediately before the numbered conclusion.
It is therefore a poor candidate for a casual skip. If the controls or the original 3DS format are inconvenient, use the HD version or a complete story explanation. A short character list is not enough: you need the game’s examination, the outcome of the protagonists’ training and the way it positions the next conflict.
When χ and Union χ can wait
χ and Union χ cover the oldest era of the setting. They explain history far earlier than Sora’s adventure and broaden the mythology around the Keyblade. That makes them valuable for lore-focused readers, but they are not required to follow the principal plot through KHIII.
If KHIII is your endpoint, defer this material and return to it afterward. If you intend to understand the series’ wider continuing lore, do not leave it out permanently. Because the original mobile releases and their story presentations have changed over time, prioritize a complete story compilation or recap that distinguishes the ancient-era events from later retellings.

What Re Mind and Melody of Memory add after KHIII
Re Mind
Re Mind adds story during and after KHIII’s climax. It is not merely a difficulty mode or a cosmetic expansion: it supplies additional perspective on the climax and events that follow it. You can finish the base game without it, but you cannot claim to have seen all of KHIII’s narrative if you omit it.
Melody of Memory
Melody of Memory retells much of the saga through a rhythm-game format and then adds Kairi’s perspective on what follows KHIII. It is a useful refresher if you have forgotten earlier events, but its new sections are the reason to play or watch it after completing the base game and Re Mind. Skipping it is reasonable only if your endpoint is the conclusion of KHIII rather than the post-KHIII storyline.
A release-oriented order that minimizes confusion
- Kingdom Hearts: learn the world, the Keyblade and the central trio.
- Re:Chain of Memories: follow Castle Oblivion and both Sora’s and Riku’s stories.
- Kingdom Hearts II: continue directly from the memory and Organization plot.
- 358/2 Days: watch the cinematic story for Roxas, Axel and Xion if you have not already done so; placing it before or around KHII works.
- Birth by Sleep: play or watch all three prequel routes.
- Re:coded: recap it when time is limited.
- Dream Drop Distance: keep its full setup for the later conflict.
- 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage: include it as a short bridge if you want the pre-KHIII transition.
- Kingdom Hearts III: reach the main conclusion.
- Re Mind and Melody of Memory: continue into added climax and post-KHIII material.
This order is organized around narrative continuity, not the order in which every collection menu displays its contents. Bundle placement is an access convenience, not a statement that one title is less important.

Square Enix listings identify versions and included works, while platform availability can differ by edition and region. Current listings include PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and the Epic Games Store, but check your regional storefront to confirm whether a title is playable or presented as cinematics. In particular, do not buy a collection expecting to play 358/2 Days or Re:coded as full modern remakes.
Choose your route by endpoint
You only want to understand KHIII
- Play Kingdom Hearts, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II, Birth by Sleep, Dream Drop Distance and Kingdom Hearts III.
- Watch 358/2 Days.
- Recap Re:coded.
- Defer χ/Union χ.
- Add 0.2 if you want the bridge into KHIII.
You want the broadest established lore
- Follow the complete route above.
- Catch up on χ/Union χ rather than treating it as disposable side content.
- Play or watch Re Mind and Melody of Memory after KHIII.
You dislike a game’s mechanics
Replace interaction with story consumption, not silence. Cinematic collections work especially well for 358/2 Days and Re:coded. For playable entries, choose a detailed recap that includes the beginning, turning points and ending; a two-minute summary usually omits the character motivation that later scenes assume.
Bottom line for a first playthrough
Keep the six core games. Watch 358/2 Days rather than forcing yourself through its original DS missions, and recap Re:coded when time is tight. Treat χ/Union χ as deferrable only when KHIII is your endpoint; it becomes important when your goal is the larger lore. Afterward, Re Mind and Melody of Memory are the additions that carry the story beyond the base ending. Square Enix’s official material describes the series as approaching its 25th anniversary in March 2027, but that anniversary context does not change which earlier stories are needed for KHIII.
