In the United States, the only FDA-approved fat-dissolving injection is deoxycholic acid (Kybella), and its approval is limited to improving the appearance of moderate-to-severe fullness caused by submental fat—the pocket beneath the chin—in adults. A healthcare provider injects the medicine under the skin, usually over several appointments. Marketing claims about dissolving fat on the abdomen, thighs, arms or other areas do not establish FDA approval, effectiveness or safety. Suitability depends on an examination of your anatomy, skin, medical history and the cause of the fullness.
What “fat-dissolving injections” actually are
“Fat-dissolving injections” is a broad marketing term, not the name of one universally regulated treatment. FDA describes injection lipolysis as a nonsurgical procedure in which a series of injections is placed under the skin to break down fat cells near the injection sites. In the United States, the approved medicine for this purpose is deoxycholic acid injection (Kybella), prescribed and administered by a healthcare provider.

The approved indication is narrow: adults with moderate-to-severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat beneath the chin. Approval does not extend automatically to fat on the stomach, hips, thighs, upper arms, knees or any other body region. Products sold online under different names, compounded preparations and injections offered for other areas are not made safe or effective merely by being described as “fat dissolvers.”
The treatment is intended to improve the appearance of a localized pocket of fat. It is not a weight-loss treatment and is not a substitute for evaluating a new lump, swelling or possible medical condition.

How the approved treatment works
Injection into the fat under the chin
A trained healthcare provider places multiple small injections into the subcutaneous fat of the submental area. The medicine acts locally to break down fat cells around the injection sites. Because the effect is tied to the injected locations, accurate assessment and placement matter; injecting a different area is not an approved extension of the treatment.
A course rather than a single guaranteed visit
The current prescribing information allows up to six treatments, with at least one month between appointments. Each treatment can involve up to 50 injections. Those are label limits, not a promise that every patient needs six sessions or will obtain a particular result. A provider decides whether another session is appropriate after examining the response and any adverse effects.
Who may be considered—and who needs a careful assessment
The labeled population is adults whose under-chin fullness is moderate to severe and associated with submental fat. A consultation is still necessary because visible fullness can have more than one cause, and reducing fat is not desirable for every neck or jawline.

Medical causes that should be checked
The label directs providers to consider other potential causes of submental fullness, including thyromegaly (an enlarged thyroid) and cervical lymphadenopathy (enlarged neck lymph nodes). A cosmetic injection should not delay evaluation of a possible thyroid, lymph-node or other medical problem.
Skin and muscle factors
Excessive skin laxity, prominent platysmal bands or other structural features can affect the appearance of the neck. If loose skin or muscle bands are the dominant issue, reducing fat may produce an aesthetically undesirable result rather than the sharper contour a patient expects.
Previous procedures
Prior surgery or aesthetic treatment in the chin and neck can change anatomy and landmarks. The prescribing information advises caution in these patients. Tell the provider about every previous procedure, injection, implant and complication in the area, even if it occurred years ago.

What happens during a treatment course
- Consultation and examination: The provider identifies the source of fullness, examines skin and neck structures, reviews prior procedures and discusses alternatives, risks and the possibility that treatment is unsuitable.
- Treatment planning: The area to be treated is mapped so injections remain in the intended submental fat. The plan may call for fewer than six visits; the label requires at least one month between treatments.
- Injection appointment: The healthcare provider administers the medicine into subcutaneous fat. A single visit may include as many as 50 injections, although the number used for an individual varies.
- Follow-up decision: At a later visit, the provider checks the response and adverse effects before deciding whether another treatment is medically and cosmetically reasonable.
There is no evidence in the cited FDA material establishing a standard recovery duration, a universal number of days of swelling or a guaranteed timeline for visible improvement. Ask the treating clinician what level and duration of swelling, bruising, numbness and activity limitation are plausible for your anatomy and treatment plan.

Common side effects and important complications
In the prescribing information, each of the following reactions occurred in more than 20% of subjects: injection-site swelling or edema, hematoma (bruising), pain, numbness, erythema (redness) and induration (a firm area). The frequency applies to the label’s studied population and does not predict exactly what one person will experience.

What FDA reported in September 2026
In a safety communication dated September 15, 2026, FDA reported an association between deoxycholic acid injections and injection-site nodules or masses that may not resolve over time. The agency identified 117 cases of unresolved nodules or masses. Among those reports, the mean duration unresolved at the time of reporting was 143 days—approximately five months. That is a description of reported cases, not a prediction of how long a particular patient’s lump will last.
The same communication identified 129 adverse-event cases after use outside the approved submental region. Reported serious events included blurred or reduced vision, involuntary eye contractions, muscle and nerve damage or weakness, numbness and difficulty walking. The FDA label revised in September 2026 states: “KYBELLA is not approved for the treatment of subcutaneous fat outside the submental region and such use is not recommended.”

These counts came from FDA’s adverse-event system and literature review. They do not include the total number of people treated, so they cannot be converted into an incidence rate or used to calculate your personal probability of harm.
Why self-injection and online products are dangerous
Unapproved products can have uncertain ingredients, concentration, sterility, storage and labeling. Injecting the wrong depth or location can damage skin, nerves, blood vessels or nearby structures. An online tutorial cannot replace examination of the cause of fullness or the ability to manage a complication.
FDA’s consumer guidance is explicit: “Consumers should not purchase ingredients for unapproved fat-dissolving injections or inject the drugs themselves.” Do not buy vials, syringes or “fat-dissolving” kits for home use, and do not assume that a product’s availability online means it has been reviewed by FDA.

Contact the treating provider promptly about a rapidly worsening or unusually painful reaction, skin color change, signs of tissue injury, a persistent or enlarging lump, new facial weakness or asymmetry, or trouble swallowing. Seek urgent medical attention for vision changes, severe weakness, difficulty walking, breathing problems or other serious symptoms. Patients and providers can report suspected adverse events to FDA’s MedWatch program.
Questions to ask before consenting
- What exactly is causing my fullness: submental fat, loose skin, muscle bands, a thyroid or lymph-node issue, or something else?
- Is the medicine FDA-approved for this specific body area and this use?
- What training and experience do you have administering it?
- How many injections and visits might my plan involve, and why?
- Which reactions should I expect, and which require an urgent call?
- How could my prior surgery, injections or other neck treatment change the risks or landmarks?
- What alternatives are appropriate if loose skin or platysmal bands are the main concern?
- What is the plan if I develop a persistent nodule, nerve symptom or swallowing problem?
Limits of what is known from the FDA material
The cited FDA sources do not establish comparative effectiveness against surgery or other cosmetic procedures, an individualized success rate, a standard recovery time or a universal price. Be cautious of clinics that promise permanent results, a fixed number of days to recover or guaranteed contouring. A qualified provider should explain what is known for your situation and what remains uncertain.
For a reader deciding whether to investigate treatment, the practical boundary is clear: discuss only provider-administered, FDA-approved use under the chin with a qualified clinician. Treat injections marketed for other areas or sold for self-use as unapproved and potentially hazardous, not as equivalent alternatives.
