For a more comfortable Kindle reading setup, start by adjusting text size in the book’s Aa menu. Then tune font, spacing and margins; set the screen light for the room; and try Dark Mode or warmth only if you prefer them. The exact controls vary by Kindle model, and some books do not allow text changes.
Open the reading and display controls
- For text and page layout: Open a book, tap the top of the screen to reveal the toolbar, then select Aa or Page Display. The menu can include font, size, boldness, spacing, margins, alignment, orientation, themes and reading-progress options. Which options appear depends on the device. See Amazon’s Kindle text-display instructions.
- For screen light: Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Actions, or go to Settings. Adjust brightness with the scale or plus/minus controls. Compatible models may also have a Brightness and warmth control; Amazon’s screen-light guide explains the available controls.
Adjust text and layout first
Choose a readable text size
Change the size in the in-book Aa menu, increasing or decreasing it until the text is comfortable for you. Amazon also documents a pinch gesture for changing text size. Separately, device-level font-size settings are supported on Kindle e-readers (11th Generation and higher), Kindle Scribe and Kindle Colorsoft; this is not the same as changing the text size inside a book. See Amazon’s font-size instructions.

Try font and boldness options
If letter shapes are difficult to distinguish, test another font offered in the Aa menu. Available choices vary, and a book may include a publisher font. Supported devices may also let you adjust boldness. A different font or heavier weight is a preference to test, not a universally better choice.

Use line or paragraph spacing to change how closely the text is packed on the page. Margins affect line length: narrower margins leave more room for text on each line, while wider margins leave less. Try one change at a time so you can tell which layout feels right. Alignment options may also be available.

Set the screen light for the room
Adjust brightness to suit the lighting where you are reading. Some Kindles also offer adjustable warmth, but its availability depends on the model. Amazon provides controls rather than a single recommended brightness or warmth value, so choose by preference and conditions rather than aiming for a universal number.
Try Dark Mode if you prefer a dark background
On supported black-and-white Kindle devices, Dark Mode inverts text, image and page colors. It is an optional display preference, not a required comfort setting. Amazon’s Dark Mode instructions also advise turning Dark Mode or Page Color off if a PDF renders poorly, so it displays in its original format.

Save a layout you like
Where themes are available, save a combination of text and layout settings for easy reuse. The Aa/Page Display menu may also let you choose which reading-progress information or clock appears. These options vary by device; Amazon lists them in its text-display guide.

Why some Kindle books ignore your settings
Reflowable Kindle books can adapt to the screen and to selected font and layout settings. Fixed-layout books preserve their page design; examples include print replica books, manga, comics, and some children’s books and textbooks. They may not allow changes to font size, font, color, margins, spacing or alignment. If text adjustment matters, check the book’s accessibility information. Amazon explains the distinction in its Kindle book accessibility guide.

If a setting is missing
- Check whether you are in the in-book Aa/Page Display menu or the device’s Settings; text adjustments and device-level font-size controls are separate.
- Confirm your Kindle’s exact model and generation. Amazon cautions that display settings vary by model; use the matching Kindle user or quick-start guide.
- If controls are missing only in one title, check whether it is fixed-layout and review its accessibility information.
