Start with the settings that affect every page: text size, then font and boldness, line and paragraph spacing, and margins. Set brightness for the room you are reading in; adjust warmth or Dark Mode only if your Kindle offers those controls. The exact menus and available options depend on the model, and some books use a fixed layout that cannot be changed like ordinary text.
1. Connect and register a new or reset Kindle
If your Kindle is ready to use, skip to the reading settings. A new or reset device needs internet access and an Amazon account for setup and registration. Amazon’s current setup instructions also describe phone-assisted setup, while steps can differ by model; use the guide for your specific device if the screens do not match.

- Turn on the Kindle and follow its on-screen setup prompts.
- Connect to Wi-Fi when asked. If your network is hidden, choose Other to enter its details manually. A public hotspot may require a separate sign-in page.
- Register the Kindle to your Amazon account and finish the on-screen steps.
See Amazon’s Kindle setup instructions, Wi-Fi connection help, and Paperwhite setup guide. The support index includes, among others, Kindle (2026 release), Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024 release), and Kindle (11th Generation, 2024 release), so do not assume one walkthrough fits every Kindle.

Open a book, tap the top of the screen, and open Aa or Page Display (the wording and layout vary by model). Choose a text size that lets you read comfortably without constantly resizing the page. Size is the best first adjustment because it changes both legibility and how much text fits on each page.

- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Amazon also documents a device-level font-size setting on Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and higher, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft. That control is separate from changing text size inside a book and is not listed for every Kindle. For book-level text options, see Amazon’s text customization guide and font-size support details.
3. Tune font, spacing, and margins
Once the size feels right, use the same Aa/Page Display menu to refine the page. Amazon documents font choice and boldness, along with line and paragraph spacing and margins, but the available controls vary by device and book.

- Font and boldness: Change these only if the current letter shapes or weight are difficult to read.
- Line and paragraph spacing: Increase spacing if lines feel crowded; reduce it if you want more text on the screen.
- Margins: Narrower margins can fit more words across a line; wider margins can make a page feel less dense.
Make one change at a time and read a few pages before changing another. This makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped.

4. Set brightness for the room
Use Quick Actions or Settings to adjust screen brightness. Choose a level that is comfortable in the current lighting rather than treating one brightness setting as right for every situation. Compatible devices may also show controls for warmth or Dark Mode; use them if available, but they are not present on every Kindle. Amazon’s screen light controls guide describes these options.

5. Check the book format if settings do not work
If changing font size or layout has no effect, the book may be fixed-layout rather than reflowable. Reflowable books adapt to many visual adjustments. Fixed-layout titles preserve a designed page and may not allow the same changes; Amazon lists print replica, manga, comics, and some children’s books or textbooks among the examples. Check the title’s format before treating an unresponsive setting as a device fault. See Amazon’s Kindle book-format limitations.
