First confirm that your lighter is a butane model: “windproof” describes how a lighter resists wind, not what fuel it uses. Traditional Zippo windproof wick lighters take lighter fluid, while butane inserts and torch lighters use butane. Use only the fuel and refill method specified for your exact model.
Identify the fuel system before refilling
Check the lighter’s model markings or manual. A traditional wick lighter has a wick and absorbent packing beneath a felt pad and is filled with lighter fluid; a butane lighter has a filling valve and is filled from a compatible butane can. Zippo describes these as distinct products in its windproof lighter instructions and butane insert instructions. Do not use butane in a lighter designed for lighter fluid, or lighter fluid in a butane model.

How to refill a butane lighter safely
- Prepare a safe area. Work in a well-ventilated place away from flames, heat, sparks, and other ignition sources. Keep the lighter and fuel away from children, and hold the lighter away from your face.
- Check fuel and nozzle compatibility. Use butane only if the lighter is designed for it, and ensure the can’s nozzle fits the lighter’s filling valve. Zippo’s torch insert instructions call for a proper mating between the nozzle and valve; consult your lighter’s own instructions if compatibility is unclear.
- Follow the model’s orientation and purge directions. Some manufacturers specify filling with the lighter upside down. Purging is not a universal requirement: Sarome and Prometheus describe releasing air or residual gas before filling, while Zippo’s cited torch insert instructions do not direct users to purge. Purge only if the manual for your model instructs you to, and follow its exact method. Prometheus cautions users to stop purging when butane comes out.
- Fill according to the manual. With the lighter positioned as specified, align the can nozzle with the filling valve and refill as directed for that model. Stop if the connection is unstable, fuel escapes unexpectedly, or the instructions are unclear; do not improvise a different valve or nozzle fit.
- Let it settle before lighting. Zippo specifies waiting at least two minutes after refilling its butane torch insert. Sarome recommends two to three minutes so the lighter can return toward room temperature and nearby excess butane can dissipate. Use your model’s stated wait time, keep your face away when lighting, and do not ignite if fuel has spilled or the lighter feels wet. Wipe the exterior or allow fuel nearby to evaporate fully first.
Maintain it without unsafe disassembly
Use the cleaning and servicing instructions for the exact model. The reviewed Zippo torch insert instructions say not to disassemble or modify that insert for cleaning, and warn that doing so voids its warranty. That restriction should not be treated as a universal cleaning procedure for every brand; check the manual or contact the manufacturer for burner cleaning, clearing, or repair guidance.

What to do if it still will not light
A weak flame or failed ignition after refilling does not identify one cause or justify a universal repair. Check that you used the correct fuel and followed the model-specific fill, orientation, purge, and wait instructions. If the lighter leaks, is damaged, produces an unusually high flame, or continues to malfunction, stop using it and consult the manufacturer’s service guidance rather than disassembling it or attempting an unsupported repair.
