These four options are not interchangeable HTTP clients at the same level. JQuickCurl turns supported curl-style definitions into Java calls; OkHttp is a direct HTTP client and transport; RestTemplate is Spring’s synchronous template API; and OpenFeign creates declarative clients from Java interfaces. The right choice depends on how your team wants to define requests, how closely it needs to control the transport, and which Spring APIs it already uses.

What each option does

Option Abstraction and request style Typical reason to choose it Important qualification
JQuickCurl Defines calls using supported curl-style command text, annotations, or XML. You want to bring supported curl snippets into Java or maintain command-oriented definitions. It parses curl syntax and uses OkHttp for transport; it is not a complete replacement for system curl.
OkHttp A direct HTTP client API: application code builds requests and invokes calls. You want request construction and client configuration under your application’s control. It can also serve as the transport beneath a higher-level client.
RestTemplate A synchronous Spring template API with operations such as GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, and general exchange or execute forms. You maintain an application using the classic Spring REST-client abstraction. Spring Framework 7.0 documentation deprecates it in favor of RestClient and says it will be removed in a future version; check the documentation for your deployed version.
OpenFeign A declarative client layer that creates an implementation for a Java interface annotated with Spring MVC or JAX-RS annotations. You want endpoint declarations expressed as interface methods and integrated with Spring Cloud. The interface style does not dictate the underlying transport; Spring Cloud documents optional OkHttp support when its dependency is present and the feature is enabled.

Why this is not a four-way ranking

The names describe different layers of an HTTP call. OkHttp can make calls directly, but it can also sit underneath another client. JQuickCurl uses OkHttp underneath, and OpenFeign can be configured to use OkHttp. RestTemplate, by contrast, presents Spring’s synchronous template abstraction over HTTP libraries. Comparing all four as if each were an independent transport choice obscures how they can fit together.

A useful first question is not “Which one is best?” but “Where should request definitions live?” They might live as curl-style text, imperative Java request-building code, Spring template calls, or annotated interface methods. Once that decision is clear, transport and runtime behavior become easier to evaluate.

Choose based on how your team authors requests

Choose JQuickCurl for supported curl-style definitions

JQuickCurl is the most distinct option if developers already have curl commands they want to carry into Java. Its documented features include variable substitution, conditional XML rendering, file transfers, batch execution, proxy clients, and configuration for timeouts, retries, redirects, connection pooling, and interceptors. Calls can be defined through annotations or XML.

Its curl support has a boundary: the project says it does not fully replace system curl and advises checking options that are not listed in its documentation. Treat a command as supported only after verifying the relevant syntax and behavior, especially when a workflow depends on less common curl flags. And because JQuickCurl uses OkHttp as its transport, choosing it is a choice of request-authoring layer, not a move away from OkHttp underneath.

Choose OkHttp for direct request construction

Use OkHttp directly when you want application code to construct requests and configure the client without adding a template or interface-definition layer. Its Java API includes Request, Request.Builder, OkHttpClient, and newCall. This can be a good fit when request assembly itself belongs in ordinary Java code, or when you need a transport that can also be used by a higher-level integration.

That control comes with a corresponding responsibility: your application must decide how to organize request code and configure client behavior. Evaluate timeouts, retries, redirects, connection reuse, error handling, and observability for your workload instead of assuming the client’s defaults match your service’s needs.

Choose RestTemplate when maintaining the classic Spring API

RestTemplate provides familiar synchronous operations for Spring applications, including methods for common HTTP verbs and more general exchange and execute forms. It can be the practical choice when a codebase already uses it and its lifecycle status does not conflict with your upgrade plans.

For Spring Framework 7.0, the reference marks RestTemplate deprecated in favor of RestClient and says it will be removed in a future version. That statement is specific to the current 7.0 documentation; do not project it onto an older deployed Spring version without checking that version’s documentation. For new synchronous code on Spring Framework 7, evaluate RestClient instead. Spring identifies WebClient for reactive or streaming scenarios, which is a different need from choosing a synchronous template API.

Choose OpenFeign for interface-first clients

OpenFeign suits teams that want to describe endpoints as methods on Java interfaces rather than build each request at the call site. Spring Cloud integrates Feign with Spring Boot through autoconfiguration and Spring programming-model conventions. The interface is the client definition; the transport remains a separate configuration decision.

Spring Cloud’s documentation describes OkHttp transport support when the dependency is available and the feature is enabled. Do not assume adding OpenFeign automatically means calls use OkHttp: verify the dependency and the relevant configuration for the Spring Cloud version in your application.

Check lifecycle and runtime behavior before choosing

Match lifecycle claims to your actual versions

Version numbers and lifecycle guidance change. The documentation reviewed for this comparison includes Spring Framework 7.0.9 and Spring Cloud OpenFeign 5.0.3. Those versions provide context, not a guarantee that they are the latest versions when you read this. Check the documentation and release notes for the versions managed by your project before making an upgrade or migration decision.

JQuickCurl’s repository landing page shows version 2.2.0 in a dependency example. A README example is not a live statement of the latest release, so verify the project’s current release information before selecting a dependency version.

Make retries an explicit design decision

Retry behavior is particularly easy to misread with OpenFeign. The Spring Cloud documentation describes Retryer.NEVER_RETRY as its default, which differs from core Feign’s default retry behavior. Confirm the configuration for the Spring Cloud version you use and decide deliberately whether retrying is safe for each operation. In particular, retries can have different consequences for operations that may have completed on the server before a connection failure was observed.

JQuickCurl documents retry configuration, but the fact that a framework offers retries does not establish a suitable policy for your service. For any of these options, check timeouts and retry behavior together with error mapping, redirects, pooling, transport choice, and instrumentation. These settings affect operational behavior and should be validated in the context of your application.

A practical selection path

  1. Start with the API shape. If calls should be declared as interface methods, evaluate OpenFeign. If developers need to carry supported curl definitions into Java, evaluate JQuickCurl. If request construction should stay in Java code, look at OkHttp. If the application already relies on Spring’s classic synchronous template, assess RestTemplate in light of your Spring version.
  2. Separate client layer from transport. Determine whether you are selecting a request-authoring abstraction, a direct transport, or both. For example, JQuickCurl uses OkHttp underneath, and OpenFeign can use OkHttp when configured.
  3. Check framework lifecycle. If you are on Spring Framework 7, include RestClient in the evaluation for new synchronous calls rather than treating RestTemplate as the only Spring option.
  4. Verify required behavior. Test the curl options you depend on, or inspect the relevant transport and Spring Cloud configuration for timeout, retry, redirect, pooling, error-handling, and observability needs.
  5. Validate against your own workload. Compare behavior and performance using the same endpoints, payloads, concurrency, runtime, transport settings, and measurement method if performance will decide the choice.

Is one faster or lighter?

The available project and framework documentation does not establish a performance winner among these options. Their abstraction layers also make an unqualified comparison misleading: a direct OkHttp call and a declarative OpenFeign client configured to use OkHttp are not necessarily competing transports. A useful benchmark would need to specify the workload, Java runtime, client and transport configuration, concurrency, measurement method, and reproducible results. Without that evidence, claims that one is universally faster or uses less memory are not justified.
