There is no single iPhone setting that drains the most battery on every phone. To find your main drain, open Settings > Battery and check which apps or system activities used power on your device. Then make targeted, reversible changes—often to brightness, background activity, notifications, or connectivity—based on what the screen shows.
How to check iPhone battery usage by app
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review Daily Usage and the app and system activity breakdown. In iOS 26, Daily Usage compares the current day with the previous seven days and highlights the three apps or system activities contributing most when usage is similar to or higher than usual.
- Tap View All Battery Usage to inspect another day, then tap an app for more detail.
Look at what the activity means, not just its percentage. Battery details can distinguish on-screen use from background activity and identify power associated with cellular coverage or notifications. A high figure may reflect an app you actively used rather than a setting to switch off.

Which iPhone settings and activities use the most battery?
Apple identifies several areas worth checking, but your Battery screen is the best guide to their relevance on your phone:
- Screen brightness and time before Auto-Lock: A bright display uses more energy, and leaving the screen on while idle adds unnecessary use.
- Background activity: Examples include music playback, location tracking, directions, photo syncing, and fetching mail. Some are expected when you use those features.
- Weak cellular coverage: With a weak or absent signal, iPhone searches for service, which can affect battery life.
- Notifications: Alerts can wake the device, so apps that send frequent or unnecessary notifications may contribute to use.
Apple does not provide a universal percentage or ranking for how much any one setting accounts for. The leading cause can differ with your apps, signal conditions, display use, and battery condition.

What can you safely change to save iPhone battery?
Adjust brightness and Auto-Lock
If Battery suggests that brightness is high, lower it to a comfortable level or enable Auto-Brightness. You can also enable Auto-Lock so the screen turns off when you are not using the phone. These changes are reversible; avoid settings that make the display difficult to see or use.
Limit the background work that is actually showing up
If one app is prominent for background activity, adjust that app or the feature responsible rather than disabling background functions across the phone without checking. Restricting background work can delay updates. Low Power Mode turns off Background App Refresh while active, among other changes.

Use Wi-Fi when practical and consider your signal
Apple says Wi-Fi uses less battery than mobile networks, and stronger signal conditions use less energy. Connect to reliable Wi-Fi when it makes sense. On iPhone 12 and later and iPhone SE (3rd generation), 5G Auto switches to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. During a known period without coverage, Airplane Mode can stop the phone searching for a signal—but use it only if you do not need connectivity.

Reduce notifications selectively
Turn off or limit alerts from apps whose notifications do not need to wake the phone. Keep alerts you rely on; the aim is to reduce unnecessary wake-ups, not to silence everything.

What Low Power Mode changes
Low Power Mode is a built-in, reversible option for reducing power use. Depending on the iPhone and software, it can reduce brightness, set Auto-Lock to 30 seconds, limit refresh rate on ProMotion displays, turn off some visual effects, temporarily pause iCloud Photos, and stop automatic downloads, email fetch, and Background App Refresh. It turns off when charge reaches 80% or higher.
Those changes can mean less frequent background updates while the mode is active. Use it when extending charge matters more than having every background task run normally.

Is Adaptive Power available on your iPhone?
Adaptive Power can make performance adjustments, slightly lower brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode at 20%. Apple says it needs at least seven days to learn charging habits before it engages. Availability and whether it is on by default vary by model; Apple’s current guidance requires iOS 26 or later on supported models.

What if battery drain started after an iOS update?
After an update, background tasks may continue and affect battery life and thermal performance. Apple advises waiting a few days, then checking Battery usage again before treating a short-term change as a lasting problem.
When the issue may be battery health, not a setting
Battery life also depends on battery capacity and how you use the phone. Check Settings > Battery, then open Battery Health on iPhone 15 and later or Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 14 and earlier. If the status says Service, Apple advises considering battery replacement and following the onscreen directions. Apple says battery service or recycling should be handled by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
