Choose SteamOS if you want to play games from your Steam or PC library on a handheld; choose Android if the games you care about are native Android titles. Neither platform is a universal performance winner: the right choice depends on the specific games and device, and no matched current benchmarks establish that one is faster across the board.
SteamOS vs. Android handhelds at a glance

|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Playing compatible games from a Steam or PC library. | Playing native Android games and using Android apps. |

Choose SteamOS for your Steam and PC games
SteamOS is the more direct fit if the games you already own or intend to play are in your Steam library. The Steam Deck OLED runs SteamOS 3, which Valve identifies in its technical specifications. Steam Deck is a portable gaming PC with integrated controls, rather than an Android device running mobile games.

Before buying, look up your priority games individually using Valve’s Deck Verified information. Its ratings are intended to show whether a game works comfortably on Steam Deck, considering elements such as supported display resolution, sensible default settings and readable text. Valve says the review is ongoing, so compatibility details can change as new games and updates arrive.

Windows games can require extra checks
Proton and compatibility settings can make many Windows games playable, but they do not make every PC game work without qualification. Some titles may require per-game adjustments. Valve’s Steam Support software and troubleshooting guide explains Deck Verified categories and Proton steps. Treat a Steam listing as a starting point for checking compatibility, not an unconditional guarantee that a game will work exactly as you expect.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Valve’s compatibility review documentation covers Steam Deck, Steam Machine and third-party SteamOS gaming devices, with device-specific information. Support for one device should not be assumed to mean identical support on every handheld. Valve’s May 12, 2025 announcement named the Lenovo Legion Go S as the only other officially supported SteamOS device at that time; because that statement is dated, consult current Valve documentation rather than treating it as an exhaustive current list.
Account for storage and carrying on
Valve says Steam Deck models support microSD expansion, so a compatible microSD card can be an option if you need more space for installed games. Valve also describes a quick suspend-and-resume feature on its Steam Deck product page. These are practical platform details, not evidence that a particular storage capacity or runtime suits every player.

Choose Android for native Android games
Android is the more natural choice when your target library consists mainly of games made for Android, or when using Android apps across different device types is important. Google describes Android gaming across form factors, including phones, tablets and TVs; however, a game’s availability and suitability can vary by device. Its guidance on compatibility with different form factors and natural input across form factors explains why support is not identical everywhere.
Verify gamepad support title by title
Android’s controller capability does not guarantee that every game has a console-style controller interface. Google notes that Android has supported a wide array of game controllers since API level 9 (Android 2.3 Gingerbread), while placing implementation and testing responsibilities on game developers. Its controller support guidance and controller testing guidance are aimed at developers, but their practical lesson for buyers is straightforward: check the exact game, the device and how the controls work.

How to decide before you buy
- List the games you actually play. Separate Steam or PC games from native Android games, then identify which titles matter most.
- Check compatibility for those exact titles. For Steam Deck, consult Deck Verified and the game’s current compatibility information. For Android, confirm availability and explicit gamepad support for each title.
- Compare the particular devices. Check controller behavior, ergonomics, screen, storage, battery/runtime and price for the models you are considering. Platform labels alone do not establish these device-level differences.
- Choose the ecosystem that covers your priorities. A Steam library points toward SteamOS; a verified set of Android games points toward Android. If you want both, prioritize the titles you play most rather than assuming one handheld will serve both libraries equally well.
