Apple lists Camera Control on the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The iPhone 16e and 17e are exceptions. Whether the button justifies an upgrade depends on how often you use your camera and what the complete upgrade would cost—not on the feature alone.
Which iPhones have Camera Control?
Apple’s supported-model list names these iPhones with Camera Control:

The iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e do not have the physical control. So “iPhone 16 and later” is an imprecise shorthand if it suggests every newer iPhone includes the button. Camera Control is a physical shortcut and camera interface. Apple says it can quickly open the camera and provide access to common settings. The basic actions are:

- Click to open Camera.
- Click again to take a photo.
- Click and hold to record video.
- Lightly double-press to open the settings overlay, then slide on the control to choose and adjust an option.
The setting selected through the overlay is saved for the next time you lightly press the control. Available options can vary by camera mode. Apple documents exposure, depth, zoom, camera selection (including the front-facing camera), Photographic Styles and tone. It also documents focus and exposure locking: enable the option, then lightly press and hold until AE/AF Lock appears. See Apple’s Camera Control guide for the operation and settings.
Change what the control opens
You can assign Camera Control to open Camera, Code Scanner, Magnifier or a favorite third-party camera app. You can also set it to open nothing. Accessibility options let you adjust the pressure needed for light presses and the speed required for a light double-press. These choices make the control more adaptable, though the available camera settings still depend on the mode in use.

Camera Control is not the only way to use Visual Intelligence
On supported Camera Control models, clicking and holding the control can activate Visual Intelligence. Apple describes the feature as a way to use the camera to identify or search for things, look up business details, translate or summarize text, identify plants and animals, and interact with text. The feature is distinct from the physical button: Apple documents other activation routes for iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, including the Action button, Lock Screen and Control Center. Apple notes that Apple Intelligence availability depends on language and region, and usage limits may apply. Do not assume Visual Intelligence is available in the same way everywhere.

Is Camera Control worth upgrading for?
It can be a worthwhile convenience for someone who takes photos often, wants a tactile way to launch the camera, or expects to adjust camera settings through the control. Its appeal is less compelling if you rarely take pictures, are happy using on-screen controls, or already have shortcuts that work for you. Those are practical judgments based on the documented functions; Apple’s documentation does not establish that the control alone is worth a particular upgrade price.
Compare the whole upgrade, not just the button
Before buying, compare your current iPhone with the candidate model across the features you personally value, then calculate the full cost after any trade-in. Camera Control is present on iPhone 17, for example, and Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications list exposure, depth, zoom, cameras, styles and tone among its Camera Control settings. That does not establish current prices, trade-in values, availability or which iPhone is the best value; those depend on your purchase circumstances.

A simple decision rule: if the physical shortcut would become part of how you take pictures, weigh it as one useful feature in a broader upgrade. If you would seldom touch it, do not upgrade solely to get the button—especially when an e-series model may offer another route to Visual Intelligence without Camera Control.
