An iOS update is a useful prompt for a privacy check, but Apple’s current guidance does not say that installing an update generally resets or changes your privacy choices. Review the controls after an update—particularly if apps were updated, a new permission prompt appeared, your usage changed, or someone else now has access to the iPhone.
Start in Settings > Privacy & Security. Work through app permissions, Tracking, Location Services, camera and microphone access, and (optionally) App Privacy Report. If your concern is who can access your data or account, use Safety Check. Lockdown Mode is a separate, high-risk security measure, not a routine privacy switch.

Did the iOS update change your privacy settings?
There is no general Apple statement that an iOS installation resets all privacy choices. Treat the update as a reminder to inspect your settings rather than proof that anything was changed.

A review is especially sensible when:
- an app was updated or you installed a new app;
- an app displayed a new permission request;
- you now use an app differently, such as allowing location only while navigating;
- you gave another person access to the device, or that access has ended; or
- a sensor indicator, unexpected notification, or unfamiliar network activity makes you curious.
The names and availability of controls vary by iOS release. The guidance here draws on Apple documentation for an iOS 26 Tracking page and an iPhone guide labeled for iOS 27, while Safety Check and Lockdown Mode require iOS 16 or later. Check Settings > General > About for the installed iOS version if a control is missing or has a different label.

Start with the Privacy & Security hub
Open Settings > Privacy & Security. This is the main list of categories in which apps can request access to sensitive information, devices, or sensors. An app normally appears in a category only after it has requested that permission, so an absent app is not evidence that it has some hidden access in that category.
Open each category and remove access that no longer matches the app’s purpose. The practical rule is to grant the least access that still provides the feature you want. If an app needs a one-time action, choose a temporary or narrower option when iOS offers one instead of leaving broad access enabled indefinitely.
Do not confuse a permission with a statement that an app is trustworthy. Allowing Photos for an image editor grants the requested capability; it does not endorse the developer or explain how the app handles information after it is accessed. Conversely, denying a permission is not proof that the app is unsafe. It simply prevents that particular system-level access until you change the choice.
Categories worth checking
| Category | Question to ask | Action when access is no longer justified |
|---|---|---|
| Location Services | Does this app need your location, and does it need it outside active use? | Narrow the location choice or turn it off for that app. |
| Contacts | Does the feature genuinely require your address book? | Revoke access if contact lookup or sharing is not needed. |
| Calendars | Does the app create or read events for a feature you use? | Disable access when calendar integration is not part of the task. |
| Photos | Does the app need your whole library, or only selected images? | Reduce or remove access when the feature is finished. |
| Bluetooth | Does the app connect to a nearby accessory or scan for devices? | Turn off access if the accessory feature is not in use. |
| Local Network | Does the app need to find devices on your home or office network? | Revoke access if local-device discovery is unnecessary. |
| Microphone | Does the app record voice, calls, or audio messages? | Disable access for apps with no audio feature you use. |
| Camera | Does the app capture photos, video, or scan codes? | Remove access when camera features are not required. |
| Health | Does the app need specific health data for a feature you use? | Review and withdraw access that no longer fits your needs. |
Other categories can appear on your iPhone. Review them using the same least-access test rather than assuming that an app’s original request is still necessary. A useful comparison is feature usefulness versus access breadth: keep a capability when it enables something you actively use, but prefer the narrower choice when both settings deliver the same result.
Review Tracking separately from app permissions
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. Tracking controls a different activity from ordinary permissions such as Contacts, Photos, or Microphone. It concerns an app’s ability to track you across other companies’ apps and websites; it is not a master switch for everything an app does with data stored on your iPhone.
This distinction explains why an app can have permission to use a photo or microphone while its cross-company tracking request is denied. Review both decisions instead of assuming that one screen covers the other.
Change individual tracking decisions
The Tracking screen lets you change the decision for individual apps. Turn an app off if you do not want to allow its cross-company tracking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStop future tracking prompts
Turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track if you do not want to receive these requests. Apple says that when this control is off, apps that request tracking are treated as though you chose Ask App Not to Track. This setting changes the handling of tracking requests; it does not replace the separate reviews for location, contacts, photos, sensors, or other data categories.

Audit Location Services with the narrowest useful choice
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Review every listed app and decide how much location access its feature actually needs.
| Choice or control | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| While Using | The feature needs location while you are actively using the app. | Location access is limited to active use, so background-dependent features may not work as expected. |
| Ask Next Time | You want to make a fresh decision the next time the app asks. | You will see another permission request before the app can use location. |
| Off | The app has no location feature you want to use. | Location-dependent features may be limited or stop working. |
| Precise Location | The app needs an exact position rather than an approximate area. | Disabling it provides a less precise location and may reduce accuracy for navigation or other location-specific features. |
The exact options shown can depend on the app. Compare precise versus approximate location and active-use access versus any ongoing or background access that iOS presents for that app. If an app works without an exact position, leave Precise Location off.
For example, a navigation app may need precise location while you are traveling, whereas a local weather app may work with an approximate area. A food-delivery app might need location during an order but not indefinitely between orders. The right choice depends on the feature you actually use, not on the app’s label.

Location Services has a System Services area. Check it if you want to examine Apple’s system-level location features in addition to individual apps.
Turning Location Services off can limit features. Apple also notes that location may still be used to help emergency-call response even when Location Services is disabled. Do not treat the emergency exception as a reason to leave every app enabled; it is a separate safety function.
Check camera and microphone access
In Settings > Privacy & Security, open the camera and microphone categories and remove access that does not match an app’s function. A messaging app may need a microphone for voice messages, for example, but an unrelated utility may not.
Pay attention while using the phone. Apple’s iPhone guide says a green indicator appears when the camera is in use, including when the camera and microphone are being used together. If the indicator appears unexpectedly, close the app, check its camera and microphone permissions, and investigate its recent activity with App Privacy Report if that report is enabled.
The indicator is a prompt to investigate, not a diagnosis. Check which app was open, whether a call or scanning feature was active, and whether the behavior repeats. Then compare the permission with the feature you intended to use.

Use App Privacy Report for visibility, not automatic blocking
App Privacy Report is optional and is found under Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report. It records app access to data and sensors plus network activity, helping you investigate behavior that is difficult to see from permission switches alone.
Turn it on before you need historical detail
The report starts collecting only after you activate it. Apple states: “App Privacy Report will only start gathering information after you’ve turned it on, so it may take a bit of time for details to appear.” It shows a rolling view of the past seven days after data has been collected; it cannot instantly reconstruct activity from before activation.
That timing is an important limitation. Enabling the report immediately after an update will not produce a complete record of the previous week. Leave it enabled while you use the phone normally, then return once enough activity has accumulated to make the entries useful.

Give it time to populate, then inspect unexpected sensor access and unfamiliar network domains. Use those entries as leads: decide whether to change a permission, stop using the app, or ask the developer why the access is needed. The report provides visibility; it does not itself revoke a permission.
A domain you do not recognize is not automatically malicious. Apps can contact services needed for sign-in, crash reporting, content delivery, analytics, or other functions. Look for patterns and compare them with the app’s expected behavior before taking action.
Know what happens when you turn it off
Apple says report data is encrypted and stored only on the iPhone. Turning App Privacy Report off clears its data. If you later enable it again, collection starts from that point rather than restoring the previous report.
Use Safety Check when sharing or account access is the concern
Permission categories cover apps, but they do not show every person, device, or service that may have access to your information. On an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check.

Manage Sharing & Access
Choose Manage Sharing & Access for a selective review. This is the option when you want to examine sharing and account or device access and decide item by item what should continue. It is useful after a relationship, household arrangement, or shared-device situation changes.
Emergency Reset
Emergency Reset is the rapid, broad option for stopping sharing. Apple explicitly advises considering personal safety before making changes. If another person may monitor or control the iPhone, abruptly changing sharing, account, or device access can have consequences. Use the selective review when you can safely examine each relationship; use the broader reset only when its urgency justifies the wider change.
Safety Check is therefore different from an app-permission audit. The former considers sharing and account or device access; the latter focuses on what apps can reach on the phone. You may need one, the other, or both.
Do not enable Lockdown Mode as a routine post-update step
Lockdown Mode is intended for people who may be at risk from highly sophisticated, targeted attacks. Apple recommends installing the latest software before enabling it. It is not a general replacement for reviewing permissions.
Lockdown Mode restricts or changes parts of the iPhone experience, including some web technologies, messaging behavior, invitations, photo handling, wireless functions, and device-connection behavior. Those restrictions can interfere with normal features, so enable it only when your risk profile calls for that level of protection and you understand the usability cost.
For most readers, narrowing permissions and reviewing sharing provides a more proportionate response than turning on Lockdown Mode. Treat it as a specialized security decision, not as the default setting after every update.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical post-update review order
The following order moves from everyday app access to specialized diagnostics and account safety:
- Confirm your version: Open Settings > General > About and note the iOS version so you can match the instructions and labels.
- Open Privacy & Security: Review Location Services, Contacts, Calendars, Photos, Bluetooth, Local Network, Microphone, Camera, Health, and any other categories shown.
- Reduce permissions: For each app, keep only the access needed for a feature you currently use. Prefer a one-time, selected, approximate, or active-use choice when it meets the need.
- Review Tracking: Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking, change individual decisions, and decide whether to disable Allow Apps to Request to Track.
- Refine location: Check each app’s access level and Precise Location setting, then inspect System Services if you want a system-level review.
- Check sensor access: Review camera and microphone permissions and watch for the green camera-use indicator during normal use.
- Enable App Privacy Report if useful: Turn it on before investigating; return after it has had time to collect up to seven days of activity.
- Review sharing when relevant: Use Safety Check’s Manage Sharing & Access or Emergency Reset according to your safety situation.
- Reserve Lockdown Mode: Consider it only for the targeted-attack risk Apple describes, after installing current software.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming an absent app has hidden access: An app generally appears in a category after it requests permission.
- Treating Tracking as a universal privacy switch: Tracking and permissions for data, sensors, and location address different activities.
- Expecting App Privacy Report to show the past immediately: Collection begins only when enabled, and the view covers collected activity over a rolling seven-day period.
- Turning off every location feature without considering consequences: Location-dependent functions may stop, and emergency-call location can still be used to aid response.
- Using Emergency Reset without a safety plan: Broad sharing changes can alert or affect someone who monitors the device.
- Enabling Lockdown Mode for ordinary discomfort: Its restrictions are intended for a small, higher-risk audience.
What to do when an app stops working
Privacy controls can reduce functionality by design. If an app breaks after you narrow access, identify the specific feature you need rather than restoring every permission. Reopen that category, grant the smallest useful option, and test the feature again. For location, that may mean changing from off to While Using or allowing precise location only when accuracy is essential.
Best Value
If an app repeatedly asks for access you do not expect, leave the permission off, check App Privacy Report after it has collected data, and contact the developer for an explanation. An unexpected request is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that the app is malicious.
How to maintain the audit
There is no need to reset every switch after every update. Revisit the audit when an app update introduces a new prompt, when your use of a feature changes, or when the set of people with device or account access changes. Keeping permissions aligned with current use is more useful than applying the same setting to every app or enabling the most restrictive mode universally.
A short review after a major iOS release, followed by smaller checks when circumstances change, keeps the task manageable. Record any permission you deliberately leave broad because a feature depends on it; that makes the next review faster and helps you notice when the feature is no longer part of your routine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do iOS updates normally reset privacy settings?
Apple’s current guidance does not say that installing an update generally resets or changes privacy choices. Use the update as a reminder to inspect permissions, Tracking, location, sensors, and sharing, especially after app updates or a change in device access.
What is the difference between Tracking and app permissions?
Tracking concerns an app following activity across other companies’ apps and websites. Permissions such as Photos, Contacts, Location, Camera, and Microphone control access to information or hardware on the iPhone. Review both areas separately.
How long does App Privacy Report take to show information?
It starts collecting only after you turn it on, so details may take time to appear. Its view covers collected activity over a rolling past-seven-day period; it cannot reconstruct activity from before activation.
Should I turn off Location Services completely?
Usually review each app and choose the narrowest useful option, such as While Using, Ask Next Time, or approximate location. Turning Location Services off can limit features, and Apple says location may still be used to help emergency-call response.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When should I use Safety Check’s Emergency Reset?
Use it only when a broad, rapid stop to sharing is appropriate and consider personal safety first. Manage Sharing & Access is better for a selective review when you can safely examine people, devices, and services item by item.
Is Lockdown Mode recommended after every update?
No. Apple describes it for people at risk from highly sophisticated, targeted attacks. It restricts some web, messaging, invitation, photo, wireless, and device-connection behaviors, so it carries meaningful usability costs.
The Bottom Line
An iOS update is a good reason to review privacy, not evidence that Apple changed every setting. Start at Settings > Privacy & Security, keep each app’s access as narrow as practical, review Tracking separately, refine location and sensor permissions, and use App Privacy Report for visibility after it has collected data. Turn to Safety Check for sharing or account access, and reserve Lockdown Mode for the specialized risk Apple describes.
