For a quick still screenshot in Hyprland, start with grim + slurp; for video, choose among OBS Studio, wf-recorder, and wl-screenrec. The eight options below serve different workflows rather than competing as eight equivalent apps: some capture stills, some record video, and some add an interface or annotation tools.
How to choose a Hyprland capture tool
Decide first whether you need a still image or a recording. For screenshots, consider whether you prefer a small command-line pipeline, an integrated helper, or an annotation interface. For video, consider whether you want OBS’s PipeWire and desktop-portal workflow or a direct recorder. Clipboard output and region selection are separate workflow needs, often handled by supporting utilities.

These picks are drawn from the tools in the Hyprland Wiki’s Screenshots & Recording guidance. The Wiki describes commonly used tools; it does not rank these eight as an official best-of list. The documentation does not establish a measured feature or performance comparison, so there is no universal winner.

Eight free and open-source options
1. grim + slurp: a simple screenshot pipeline
Best for: selecting a region and capturing it with composable command-line utilities. This is a two-tool workflow, not one application: grim captures the image, while slurp lets you select the region. You can send the result to an annotation helper or copy it to the clipboard.

grim -g "$(slurp)" - | swappy -f -
This Hyprland Wiki example sends the selected screenshot to swappy for annotation. To copy a selected screenshot to the clipboard instead, the Wiki shows:
grim -g "$(slurp -d)" - | wl-copy
Here, wl-copy is a clipboard utility; it and slurp are supporting workflow components, not additional picks in this list. Hyprland’s screenshot examples also document streaming a capture to these helpers.

2. Grimblast: a Hyprland-oriented screenshot helper
Best for: readers who want a more integrated screenshot utility within the Hyprland ecosystem rather than assembling a basic grim-and-slurp pipeline. Hyprland’s FAQ presents Grimblast as its own more complete screenshot utility after showing the grim/slurp approach. The cited guidance does not establish a detailed feature-by-feature comparison.

3. Satty: screenshot annotation
Best for: annotating a screenshot after capture. Hyprland describes Satty as inspired by swappy and Flameshot, and as an almost drop-in replacement for swappy. Its example pipes grim’s output to Satty, with clipboard copying via wl-copy and a timestamped PNG save path. Those are documented workflow details, not a measured comparison with other annotation tools.
Rank #3
- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
4. Flameshot: annotation in a screenshot interface
Best for: readers looking for a screenshot tool with a built-in annotation interface. In Hyprland, its capture workflow depends on XDG desktop portal setup. Flameshot’s Wayland help calls for xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland. The project also documents a multi-display window-rule workaround, so display arrangements may require adjustment.
5. HyprCapture: an integrated Hyprland workflow
Best for: readers looking for a Hyprland-oriented utility covering both screenshots and recording rather than composing smaller tools. That is the scope described by the Hyprland Wiki; its cited guidance does not support adding further feature claims.
Rank #4
- CURVED FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT: An immersive viewing experience with a curved monitor that wraps more closely around your field of vision; It creates a wider view, enhancing depth perception and minimizing peripheral distraction
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
6. OBS Studio: GUI-based recording through PipeWire and the portal
Best for: a graphical recording workflow using PipeWire and the desktop portal. Hyprland’s setup guidance names pipewire, wireplumber, xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland, and qt6-wayland as components to install. Follow the Hyprland OBS setup guidance for the current details. This is not a claim about recording performance or hardware encoding.
7. wf-recorder: a direct Wayland screen recorder
Best for: a lightweight, direct recording workflow. Hyprland describes wf-recorder as a lightweight Wayland screen recorder and provides examples for full-screen and selected-region recording. Use slurp when you want to select a region.

8. wl-screenrec: a wlroots-focused recorder
Best for: readers considering a recorder explicitly described by Hyprland as focused on wlroots. The Wiki calls wl-screenrec a high-performance wlroots screen recorder featuring hardware encoding, and provides whole-screen and region examples. That description is specific to the documented tool; it does not establish a comparative performance ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which option fits your workflow?
- Fast region screenshot: use grim + slurp. Add swappy for annotation or wl-copy for clipboard output.
- Screenshot annotation: consider Satty or Flameshot. The cited documentation describes both annotation workflows but does not provide a measured feature comparison. Flameshot’s Hyprland setup specifically involves XDG portal components.
- Video recording with a GUI: use OBS with the PipeWire and desktop-portal components listed by Hyprland.
- Direct video recording: compare wf-recorder’s documented lightweight workflow with wl-screenrec’s wlroots-focused workflow.
- One Hyprland-oriented utility: consider Grimblast for screenshots or HyprCapture for the screenshot-and-recording scope described by the Wiki.
What to check when capture does not work
A capture failure does not by itself prove that the tool is incompatible with Hyprland. Portal-dependent workflows need a functioning desktop portal setup. For Flameshot, check that xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland are installed. For OBS, check the PipeWire and portal components in Hyprland’s setup guidance. Distribution package names and portal behavior can vary by distribution and software version, so use the relevant documentation for your installation.
If the problem occurs only on a multi-display setup with Flameshot, consult its documented window-rule workaround; the project notes that display arrangements may need adjustment. For current Hyprland configuration details, use its current Wiki: the Screenshots & Recording page notes that Hyprland 0.55 deprecates hyprlang in favor of Lua.
