A full hybrid can briefly do so and recharges its battery while driving. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) adds a battery that can be charged externally. In a range-extended or series plug-in hybrid, an electric motor drives the wheels and the engine generates electricity. These labels describe different aspects of a vehicle, so understanding its power flow is more useful than relying on the word “hybrid” alone.
How the four hybrid labels differ
The key questions are whether the electric motor can propel the car by itself and whether the car can be charged from an external power source. Mild and full hybrids differ in how much the electric system can do; “plug-in” describes charging capability; “series” describes how power reaches the wheels.

| Type | Can the motor drive the car alone? | Can it plug in? | How the battery is charged |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mild hybrid | No; the motor assists the engine. | No. | Through the vehicle’s systems while driving; it does not use external charging. |
| Full hybrid | Yes, for short distances or at low speeds. | No. | Regenerative braking and the engine. |
| Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) | Yes; electric driving depends on the vehicle and available battery charge. | Yes. | An external electricity source, the engine, and regenerative braking. |
| Range-extended or series plug-in hybrid | Yes; an electric motor drives the wheels. | Yes. | Like other PHEVs, it can use external charging; its engine generates electricity for the motor. |
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) describes mild and full hybrids as types of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). It states: “An HEV cannot plug in to off-board sources of electricity to charge the battery.” Read the AFDC explanation of hybrid electric vehicles.
What a mild hybrid can—and cannot—do
A mild hybrid’s battery and motor support the engine and can help the vehicle’s stop-start system shut the engine off when the car is stopped. The motor cannot propel the vehicle on electricity alone, and the car is not designed to plug in for charging. It is therefore inaccurate to think of a mild hybrid as an electric car with a small battery: its electric system assists the engine rather than replacing it as the source of wheel power.

How a full hybrid works
A full hybrid has a larger battery and more powerful electric motor than a mild hybrid. It can move the vehicle on electric power alone for short distances or at low speeds, though the engine remains part of the powertrain. A conventional full hybrid does not plug in; regenerative braking and the engine recharge its battery. The AFDC outlines the distinction between mild and full hybrid systems.
What changes with a plug-in hybrid
A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle combines a battery, electric motor, gasoline tank and internal-combustion engine. It can use electricity and gasoline, and it can charge from an external electrical source. Depending on the vehicle, it may run mostly on electricity until the battery charge is nearly depleted, or it may use gasoline and electricity together in a blended mode. The EPA explains PHEV components and operating modes.

Charging matters to the fuel-use trade-off
A PHEV can also recharge through its engine and regenerative braking, but plugging it in consistently is how to make greater use of its electric-driving capability. The DOE says a PHEV that is never plugged in will have fuel economy about the same as a similarly sized HEV. If a trip is shorter than the vehicle’s all-electric range and the battery is charged between trips, it may be possible to complete that trip using only electric power. These outcomes depend on the vehicle and how it is used; they are not a promise of a particular range or fuel saving. See the AFDC overview of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

The EPA notes that many plug-in vehicles can charge from a standard 120-volt outlet, while a dedicated 240-volt outlet or charging system can charge more quickly. Actual charging time and capability vary by vehicle, so check its specifications. A compatible home charging setup is relevant to PHEV ownership, not a requirement for mild or ordinary full hybrids. The EPA’s guide to the plug-in hybrid vehicle label discusses charging and vehicle-specific capability.

What “range-extended” or “series” means
These terms describe a power-flow arrangement, not simply how large a battery is. In a series plug-in hybrid, the electric motor drives the wheels and the engine generates electricity for that motor. The DOE says series plug-in hybrids are often called extended-range electric vehicles. Other PHEVs can use parallel or combined modes, in which the engine and motor can both be mechanically connected to drive the wheels. Because designs and terminology vary, check the specific vehicle’s description rather than assuming every PHEV uses the same arrangement. The DOE describes series, parallel and combined PHEV configurations.

EPA labels report electric-mode efficiency in miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) and gasoline-only fuel economy in miles per gallon (MPG). They are separate measures: MPGe is not gasoline MPG, and combining the figures into one number can obscure which operating mode it represents. EPA presents its estimates as general comparison guidance, not a guarantee of what a driver will achieve.

Which type fits your driving and charging access?
- Choose by function, not just the badge: if you want to know whether a vehicle can move without the engine, verify that its system is a full hybrid or plug-in hybrid, not a mild hybrid.
- Consider whether you can charge regularly: a PHEV’s electric-driving opportunity depends on having charge available. If you cannot plug it in, the DOE says its fuel economy will be about the same as a similarly sized HEV.
- Match the electric capability to your trips: a charged PHEV may use only electric power on a trip shorter than its all-electric range, while longer trips can involve gasoline, depending on the vehicle and operating mode.
- Check the specific model: confirm its charging capability, electric range, fuel-economy label and power-flow design in vehicle-specific information. The broad category names do not establish those details.
