MediaTek lists the same eight-core layout and two Cortex-A75 cores rated up to 2 GHz for both; the G85 has higher stated maximum clock speeds for its Cortex-A55 cores and Mali-G52 MC2 graphics. But current benchmark aggregates are mixed: the G81 leads in AnTuTu 11 and Geekbench 6 single-core, while the G85 leads in Geekbench 6 multi-core. Those figures come from different device samples, not a controlled test of two otherwise identical phones.
What is the difference between Helio G85 and Helio G81?
Their published CPU and GPU specifications are similar. Both are 64-bit, octa-core MediaTek SoCs with two Arm Cortex-A75 cores rated up to 2 GHz, six Cortex-A55 cores, and Mali-G52 MC2 graphics. The G85’s specification table rates its Cortex-A55 cores up to 1.8 GHz, versus 1.7 GHz for the G81. MediaTek lists a higher maximum GPU frequency for the G85 as well, though its G85 page gives two different figures.

That makes the G85 look stronger on paper in a few clock-speed figures, but clock rates alone do not establish how fast a particular phone feels or performs over a long gaming session. The phone’s cooling, memory, software, and power limits also matter.

How to interpret the G85 GPU clock figures
MediaTek’s Helio G85 specifications list a maximum Mali-G52 MC2 frequency of 1 GHz, while a feature paragraph on the same page says 950 MHz. Its Helio G81 specifications list 820 MHz. The published information therefore supports saying the G85 has the higher stated maximum, but not treating its exact maximum as unambiguous.
MediaTek describes HyperEngine as providing “intelligent resource management” for sustained performance and longer gameplay. That is the manufacturer’s feature description, not proof of a particular gaming result or a measured advantage over the G81.

Which chip scores higher in benchmarks?
NanoReview’s displayed aggregates, observed in 2026, show a close split rather than one chip winning every test. AnTuTu 11 and PCMark 3.0 include different numbers of devices for each chip, so the results are not a matched comparison. The percentages below are arithmetic differences between the displayed scores, not separate measurements.
| Benchmark | Helio G85 | Helio G81 | Higher displayed result |
|---|---|---|---|
| AnTuTu 11 total | 348,562 (65 tests) | 358,608 (43 tests) | G81, about 2.9% higher |
| Geekbench 6 single-core | 419 | 432 | G81, about 3.1% higher |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core | 1,461 | 1,416 | G85, about 3.2% higher |
| PCMark 3.0 overall | 8,539 (20 phones) | 8,824 (12 phones) | G81, about 3.3% higher |
These aggregate results do not establish that a G81 phone will outperform every G85 phone. Device models, cooling, software, memory, and test conditions can differ. Treat small gaps in pooled scores as a rough comparison, not a prediction for a specific handset.

Does the G85 have a gaming advantage?
The G85 has the higher stated maximum GPU clock, but the available game results do not provide a head-to-head test against a G81 phone. NanoReview lists the following results for a Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 with the G85:
- PUBG Mobile: 45 FPS at High
- Call of Duty: Mobile: 40 FPS at Medium
- Fortnite: 21 FPS at Low
- Shadowgun Legends: 49 FPS at Low
- World of Tanks Blitz: 51 FPS at Medium
- Mobile Legends: Bang Bang: 46 FPS at Ultra
These are reported results for one G85-powered handset, not a controlled comparison with a G81 device. Frame rates can vary with the game version, operating system, phone configuration, thermal behavior, and selected settings. The numbers cannot show that the G85 consistently beats the G81 in gaming.

Which should you choose when buying a phone?
Do not choose between two phones on the chip name alone. Compare the complete models available in your region, especially if one is substantially cheaper or has a better configuration.

- Sustained use: Cooling and power limits affect how well a phone maintains performance during longer gaming sessions.
- Everyday ownership: Compare display, battery capacity, charging, software version, and support.
- Connectivity: Confirm the phone’s supported LTE bands and regional variant. The chip’s listed LTE category does not confirm which bands a manufacturer enables in a particular model.
- Value: Compare current local prices and availability for the exact handset configurations; the chip comparison alone does not establish which phone is the better deal.
On published specifications, the G85 has modest clock-speed advantages in selected areas. On the displayed benchmark aggregates, the G81 edges ahead in several tests and the G85 wins one. Without matched handset and gaming tests, neither chip can be declared the clear all-round performance winner.
