Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For seamless movie or video frame-rate changes without a blank screen, look for Quick Media Switching (QMS) support in the source, display, and every device between them. For games whose rendered frame rate varies, look for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). A cable cannot add either feature: it must be the right certified bandwidth tier for the signal, while the connected devices and specific ports must implement the feature.
Choose QMS for video mode changes, VRR for variable game frames
“Frame-rate switching” can mean two different things. A video source may change output frame rate between clips or programs; a game may deliver frames at a changing rate while it is running. The relevant HDMI features differ.

| Feature | What it is for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Media Switching (QMS) | Changes video frame rate without the usual audio/video blackout when the resolution remains unchanged. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes QMS as using the HDMI VRR mechanism. Its examples include switching among 24Hz, 50Hz, and 60Hz video. | QMS support in the source and display, on the ports actually connected; also check any intervening equipment. |
| Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) | Gaming configurations in which display refresh timing follows changing game frame delivery. HDMI Forum says VRR reduces or eliminates lag, judder or stutter, and tearing in supported configurations. | VRR support across the source, display, and any receiver, switch, or other pass-through device. |
| Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) | Signals a display to switch automatically to a low-latency setting. | Useful for automatic game-mode switching, but it is not the feature that changes video frame rate. |
| Quick Frame Transport (QFT) | Reduces transport and display latency. | QFT is distinct from QMS; do not treat it as a solution for frame-rate mode changes. |
Feature names describe specification capabilities, not a guarantee that every device or port implements them. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s current QMS wording frames the feature under HDMI 2.2, while the HDMI Forum’s 2017 HDMI 2.1 release also lists QMS. For practical compatibility, check the exact model and its documentation rather than inferring support from a version label.

A QMS- or VRR-capable television does not make an unsupported source or receiver compatible. A single device that fails to pass the required feature or signal mode can interrupt the intended setup. Check the relevant input and output on each component, not simply whether the product has HDMI 2.1 or HDMI 2.2 somewhere in its specifications.

- Check the source and display manuals or manufacturer specifications: confirm the named feature and the particular HDMI port that supports it.
- Trace every intervening device: verify the receiver, video-pass-through soundbar, switch, capture device, or adapter supports and passes the feature on the ports used.
- Confirm the complete signal mode: check the resolution, refresh rate, color format, and HDR settings you intend to use. These affect the bandwidth required.
- Check setup details: select the supported port and enable any needed device settings; check firmware as well if the feature does not appear to work.
- Choose the cable tier for the required bandwidth: use the official certification label and a practical cable length for the installation.
Official HDMI sources do not provide a universal port-by-port compatibility matrix across brands. The device’s model-specific documentation is therefore the useful reference; a feature listed for one input should not be assumed for every input.
Match cable certification to bandwidth—not to a feature name
HDMI Forum describes the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable category for configurations up to 48Gbps. Look for its official certification label when that bandwidth is required. HDMI Licensing Administrator states that HDMI 2.2 supports up to 96Gbps and introduces the Ultra96 cable tier for higher-bandwidth configurations. That tier is relevant to those HDMI 2.2 signal requirements, not a general requirement for ordinary QMS use.

“HDMI 2.1” on a cable or device does not establish that the connected port supports QMS, VRR, or ALLM. The cable carries a signal between compatible equipment; it cannot create a feature missing from the source, display, or an intermediate device. HDMI Forum’s 2020 Ultra High Speed cable certification announcement describes the category as a way to ensure HDMI 2.1 features can be delivered over the cable. Read that as certification guidance for the cable’s role in the link, not a promise that a cable alone enables device features.

If switching still blanks or fails, isolate the limitation
- For video switching: confirm that QMS is explicitly supported at the same resolution across the source, display, and pass-through devices. QMS’s described seamless case does not cover a simultaneous resolution change.
- For gaming: check VRR support and settings across the connected devices. ALLM only automates low-latency mode selection, while QFT addresses transport latency.
- If documentation says the feature is supported: verify the selected HDMI ports, device settings, and firmware, then re-check the full resolution, refresh-rate, color-format, and HDR combination.
- If bandwidth is the constraint: confirm the cable certification tier matches the mode. Replacing a cable may address a link-capability issue, but cannot add missing QMS or VRR support.
