No. You can watch in the Apple TV app without owning an Apple TV box. Compatible smart TVs and streaming devices, phones, tablets, computers, gaming consoles, and a web browser can all provide ways to watch. Support and features depend on the exact device and your region.
Apple TV, the app, and the box are different things
“Apple TV” can refer to Apple’s streaming hardware, the Apple TV app, or Apple’s subscription streaming service. The hardware is one way to run the app, not a requirement for using it.

Apple lists compatible smart TVs and streaming devices, gaming consoles, iPhone and iPad, Mac, Windows and Android devices, and web browsers as ways to watch. If you do not have a supported TV or streaming device, Apple identifies tv.apple.com as a browser option. How to watch without an Apple TV box
Use the Apple TV app on a compatible TV or streaming device
- Open the TV’s home screen or app store and search for Apple TV. Apple lists examples including Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, VIZIO and Hisense/VIDAA TVs, as well as Roku, Fire TV, Android TV and Google TV devices. The list does not mean every model is supported.
- Install or open the app, then sign in with your Apple Account.
- Choose the subscription content, channel, rental or purchase you want to watch.
Check your exact model in its app store or the manufacturer’s compatibility information. Apple’s smart TV and streaming-device instructions also explain that some devices do not support purchases or subscriptions inside the app.

Watch in a browser
Go to tv.apple.com in a supported web browser and sign in. This lets you watch without adding an Apple TV box; available content and features may depend on your region and setup.
Use another supported device
Apple also lists phones, tablets, computers and gaming consoles among the ways to access Apple TV. Which app features are available can differ across platforms, so check Apple’s watching options for your device and region.

What “movies in the Apple TV app” means
The app brings together different kinds of viewing, but not every movie is included with an Apple TV subscription. Apple’s Apple TV app guide describes subscription programming, Apple TV channels, Store movies to buy or rent, and a Library of acquired titles.

- Store movies: Titles offered to buy or rent separately.
- Library: Titles you have acquired and can access through your account, subject to availability and applicable terms.
Check the listing for a particular movie to see whether it is included with a subscription or requires a separate rental or purchase. Apple says an Apple TV subscription does not include third-party branded subscription services or content offered to rent or buy in the app.

When a movie requires a purchase or rental
Watching and completing a transaction are not always supported in the same place. Some smart TVs and streaming devices let you sign in and play eligible content but do not offer in-app purchases or subscriptions. In that case, make the purchase, rental or subscription on another supported device using the same Apple Account, then sign in to the Apple TV app on the TV to access eligible content. A streaming device is optional if your current TV already runs the app or you can watch in a browser or on another supported device. If the TV lacks the app, a compatible streaming device can add it. Before choosing one, check whether the exact model supports Apple TV in your region and whether it has the features you need, such as 4K or HDR. Also consider whether you need to make purchases directly on the device: playback support does not guarantee in-app transaction support.

Apple TV 4K is one possible device, but it is not a prerequisite for watching in the app. Compare current model compatibility and pricing with the manufacturer or retailer, since those details vary.
